Team India scored 368/3 on Day 1 stumps. A perfect first day for India. Shubman Gill won a good toss, and his batters made the most of excellent batting conditions. The big question coming into the Test was whether they would be able to adapt quickly to the demands of red-ball cricket after a long and grueling T20 season, and the answer was an emphatic yes. Barring Yashasvi Jaiswal, every batter made a significant contribution. KL Rahul and Gill led the way with superb centuries, while Sai Sudharsan and Rishabh Pant chipped in with well-compiled fifties. There were a couple of century partnerships as well, helping India finish the day in a commanding position on 368/3. Afghanistan toiled hard in testing conditions. The weather was extremely hot and their bowlers, particularly the pacers put in a strong effort during the first two sessions. However, they appeared to run out of steam in the final session, which perhaps explains why they chose not to take the second new ball. That option remains available tomorrow morning when the bowlers will be fresher, and conditions could be more favorable. Can Afghanistan stage a fightback on Day 2 or will India tighten their grip on the contest? Join us tomorrow to find out. Skipper Shubman Gill is batting on 103* runs and KL Rahul scored 100 runs.

Stats
– Afghanistan, who made their Test debut against India in June 2018, have played only 11 Tests after that, with their current Test numbers reading four wins, seven losses and one draw
– KL Rahul is the lone player from the 2018 batch in the current Indian Test setup while Afghanistan have only two players from that group and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi and Rahmat Shah.
– This is only the second toss win for Shubman Gill in nine Tests.
– For the first time in 15 years, India will field a home Test XI without either Ashwin or Jadeja. The previous instance came against New Zealand in Nagpur in November 2010; since then, one of the two had featured in all 69 of India’s home Tests.
– Manav Suthar becomes the first specialist spinner to debut for India in Tests since 2021 (Axar Patel).
– 50th Test for Rishabh Pant. Among Indian wicketkeepers, only MS Dhoni (90) and Syed Kirmani (88) have played more.

Day 2
Team India declared their first innings for huge 564/8D. Mohammad Saleem Safi leads Afghanistan off the field with the match ball held aloft. What a spell! The session was all about India further consolidating their position in the Test. Manav Suthar got things moving with a couple of lusty sixes at the start of the session but eventually became Safi’s fifth wicket. Mohammed Siraj was then promoted ahead of Kuldeep Yadav and made the most of his brief stay, swinging freely and racing to a 12-ball 22 before Safi cleaned him up. At the other end, Washington Sundar went about his work in typically composed fashion and brought up yet another Test fifty. In many ways, that milestone appeared to be the reason Gill delayed the declaration. The visitors face a monumental task, but their immediate challenge is far simpler: survive until tea without losing too many wickets and give themselves a platform to build from. Skipper Shubman Gill scored 126 runs and KL Rahul scored 100 runs. For Afghanistan, Mohammad Saleem Safi picked 6 wickets each.

Afghanistan scores 113/5 in their first innings on Day 2 stumps. They are trailing by 451 runs with 5 wickets in hand. India continues to dominate the game. The batters set it up early and swelled the total to 564 before declaring. India was expected to have a good outing with the ball as well and debutant Manav Suthar led from the front. He got the ball to turn square instantly. This made Abdul Malik try an aggressive sweep and Manav picked up a wicket in his very first over in Test cricket. Prasidh then bowled a lovely nip-backer to uproot Sediq’s stumps. Manav bowled maiden after maiden to pin batters at the crease and Gurbaz eventually yielded, nicking off to slip. Shahidi’s resistance came to an end when Prasidh returned as he struck immediately in his second spell. Manav foxed Afsar just before stumps to close the day with three wickets. He looks all set for a fifer on debut. Rahmat used his experience to hang around, and he’s managed to hold one end tight.

Day 3
Afghanistan bowled out for 152 runs in their 1st innings. The follow-on has been enforced. There’s warm applause from Gautam Gambhir and the coaching staff as the young left-arm spinner walks into the dressing room. What a debut this has been – and he’s not done yet. India struck early in the session when Prasidh had Omarzai dragging one back onto his stumps. There was some resistance thereafter from Rahmat Shah, who became the first Afghanistan batter to score a Test fifty against India, and the injured Ashraf, who battled hard despite obvious discomfort. But once that partnership was broken by Suthar, the innings unraveled quickly. The left-arm spinner was outstanding throughout, finishing with remarkable figures of 6 for 33 in his first Test innings. Afghanistan won’t have much time to reflect on what went wrong. They’ll be back out in the middle shortly, facing India’s bowlers once again. Their immediate challenge is clear: bat through to lunch without losing too many wickets and give themselves a chance of extending the contest. Rahmat Shah scored 60 runs and skipper Hashmatullah Shahidi scored 20 runs. For Team India, debutant Manav Suthar picked 6 wickets.

Afghanistan bowled out for 112 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the game. A thumping win for India. They needed only 35.5 overs to bowl out Afghanistan after enforcing the follow-on. They win by an innings, and 300 runs is their biggest victory in Tests. The visitors actually got off to a good start in their second innings as the openers put on 42. The Indian bowlers were a bit frustrated that the wickets weren’t coming but an inspired Siraj opened the door. He was their best bowler early on. But the spinners soon joined the party. If Manav led from the front in the first innings, Washi took the baton in the second. Suddenly Afghanistan lost 4 wickets for 24 runs in the post-lunch session and lost their way. India wanted to wrap it up quickly and they wasted no time, taking the next 4 wickets for just 14 runs as Kuldeep too chipped in. Injured Sharafuddin Ashraf did not come out to bat. Afghanistan showed a bit of promise through Rahmat in their first effort. They didn’t play rash shots and made the Indian bowlers work for their wickets. Some felt they should have played more shots. On the contrary, they played too many shots and lacked patience in the second innings. Sediqullah Atal scored 42 runs and Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 24 runs. For Team India, Washington Sundar picked 4 wickets.
Leaving New Chandigarh with a massive win under the belt 🇮🇳
