Betway Test Series 2023: Historic test win against South Africa helps Team India to level the series. They won the 2nd and final test by 7 wickets and become first Asian Team to win a test at Newlands, Cape Town.

2nd Test
Game Date: 3rd January – 7th January 2024
Game Result: India won by 7 wickets
Series Result: Draw 1-1
Man Of the Match: Mohammed Siraj
Man Of the Series: Dean Elgar & Jasprit Bumrah

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
South Africa captain Dean Elgar won the toss against Team India and decided to bat first at Newlands, Cape Town. Two changes in Indian Team and Ravindra Jadeja & Mukesh Kumar is playing today in the place of Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur.

South Africa bowled out for just 55 runs in their 1st innings after batting first. Siraj leads India off the field as lunch is taken on Day 1. Who would’ve seen this coming after the hammering in Centurion? A spell of 6/15 from Siraj in 9 overs has absolutely demolished the hosts as they are bundled out for a total of 55 – South Africa’s lowest since readmission. It was Elgar who won the toss in his final Test, and he opted to bat first on a pitch with a fair amount of grass. What followed was carnage as Siraj bowled a magical spell. Swing, seam, accuracy – it had it all, and once he gets on a roll, we know how destructive he can be in helpful conditions. The heavy roller is being used on the pitch at the moment under the watchful eyes of Rahul Dravid who’s out in the middle while players take lunch. Is there any way back for South Africa from here? There’s no doubt they’re also going to get plenty of assistance out there, but they will need to be careful about trying too hard. Just be patient and the wickets will come, as Siraj showed. He was really immaculate with his line and length. Kyle Verreynne scored 15 runs and David Bedingham scored 12 runs. For Team India, Mohammed Siraj picked 6 wickets.

Team India bowled out for 153 runs in their 1st innings and they have 98 runs lead. Crazy! Last 11 balls – W 0 W 0 W 0 0 W 0 W W. A dramatic collapse (153/4 to 153/10) and India’s lead is less than 100 runs. Their lead was 56 with six wickets in hand at tea. Kohli and Rahul looked pretty comfortable and even Rabada, who bowled superbly in the middle session, conceded 28 runs in 5 overs after tea. But one loose shot from Rahul and it opened the floodgates. Extra bounce from Ngidi nipped out three Indians in an over. And if that wasn’t bizarre, India lost three more wickets within the next five deliveries. Unbelievable stuff happening. Less than 60 overs bowled, and 20 wickets have fallen. And we are not done yet. South Africa, who opted to bat, will come out to bat again. More than 100 minutes left in the day. How many more wickets will fall? Virat kohli scored 46 runs and skipper Rohit Sharma scored 39 runs. For South Africa, Rabada, Ngidi & Burger picked 3 wickets each.

South Africa scored 62/3 in their 2nd innings at the end of Day 1 and they are trailing by 36 runs with 7 wickets in hand. An absolutely ridiculous day of Test cricket comes to an end. 23 wickets fell in total after South Africa won the toss and opted to bat. We had a six-fer from Siraj in a 9-over spell that blew the hosts away to their lowest total since readmission. We then had India losing their last six wickets for 0 runs, going from 153/4 to 153 all out. And now South Africa are already three down in their second innings, while they still trail by 36. Just bonkers cricket on a bonkers pitch where the ball is consistently rearing up off a good length, especially from the Wynberg end. Not just that, the odd ball is also shooting low. Good luck being a batter out there. Anyway, India are well ahead in the game at the moment, and it’s a great chance for them to finish level in the series. South Africa have to bat out of their skins tomorrow to even take it into Day 3.

Day 2
South Africa bowled out for 176 runs and set the target of 79 runs for Team India. South Africa had started the day trailing by 36 runs, and it took a great Test innings from Aiden Markram to give them some sort of a lead. He took his chances and pulled off some remarkable strokes even as Jasprit Bumrah struck consistently to deny him much support at the other end. Bumrah eventually finished with a six-fer. The bounce on this pitch remains inconsistent, so it’s not going to be easy out there. But India should feel they are ahead. Aiden Markram scored 106 runs and skipper Dean Elgar scored 12 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 6 wickets.

Team India scored 80/3 and won the game by 7 wickets and level the series 1-1. This New Year’s Test is done and dusted inside four and a half sessions is the shortest completed Test match. Dean Elgar’s international career comes to an end. This is going to be an emotional moment for him as players from both teams exchange handshakes. Opting to bat, South Africa were bundled out for 55 in the morning session is their lowest score in Tests since their readmission as Siraj ran riot with a six-fer. In reply, India were quick to get into the lead but they collapsed in an unbelievable manner as they lost their last six wickets without adding a run. After conceding a lead of 98, South Africa lost three wickets as 23 wickets fell on the opening day. The Test continued to progress at a brisk pace even today. Bumrah was on the money from the word go and picked up a fifer. For South Africa, Markram played one of his best Test knocks as he notched up a century on this devilish surface to take his team’s lead over 50. Siraj removed the big fish and Bumrah wrapped up the proceedings to finish with 6/61. Chasing 79 for victory, young Jaiswal came out all guns blazing. He threw his bat at almost everything and smashed six boundaries as he got his team off to a flier. India lost three wickets but they hardly broke a sweat in the fourth innings. Siraj and Bumrah bagged six-fers, Markram played one helluva innings. The pitch, undoubtedly, will be a major talking point. Live pictures, meanwhile, shows Virat Kohli presenting Elgar a signed Indian jersey.
