4th Test
Game Date: 23rd February – 27th February 2024
Game Result: Team India won by 5 wickets
Man Of the Match: Dhruv Jurel

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss against Team India and decided to bat first at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi. Akash Deep is debuting for India in the place of Jasprit Bumrah who has been rested for this game to manage his workload.

England scored 302/7 runs on day 1 stumps in their 1st innings after batting first. India slightly ahead after the first day but Joe Root has kept England in the game with a magnificent century. Akash Deep had a dream debut as he ran through England’s top order within the first hour of day’s play and put India right in front. The spin twins – Ashwin and Jadeja – struck once each just before lunch to make it India’s morning. England were in trouble at 112/5 when Root and Foakes joined hands, the duo played good old fashioned attritional cricket post-lunch and ensured England didn’t lose any wicket for the first time in a session this series. The pair added a 100+ stand and started to up the scoring post-tea but Siraj came back and got the ball to reverse, he accounted for Foakes and Hartley in a fiery spell. Root kept going at the other end. He played the conventional sweep once and the reverse sweep once all day, restrained himself and played the situation. He brought up his hundred with a glorious cover drive and added another vital partnership with Robinson. From 112/5 to 302/7, England would take that recovery and if they can cross 350 tomorrow then they are well and truly in the game. The surface has played better as the day progressed and even though the odd ball has kept low, the batters have had the time to negate it. India will hope there’s the same sort of help tomorrow morning as there was today and look to pick up the three wickets quickly. Joe Root scored 106* runs and Ben Foakes scored 47 runs. For Team India, Akash Deep picked 3 wickets.

George Giffen vs Eng
Mony Noble vs Eng
Wilfred Rhodes vs Aus
Garfield Sobers vs Eng
Ian Botham vs Aus
Stuart Broad vs Aus
R Ashwin vs Eng
Only Botham (22 Tests vs Aus) have achieved the double in fewer matches than Ashwin’s 23 vs England.

Ashwin is three scalps away from surpassing Anil Kumble to become the leading wicket-taker in India in Tests. He’s also one wicket away from the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets against England.

Day 2
England bowled out for 353 runs in their 1st innings. 51 runs added on Day 2 as England finally get bowled out for 353. It was all about Root and his two partnershiops of 113 for the 6th wicket with Foakes and 102 for the 8th with Ollie Robinson that held his team afloat. No Bumrah and the England number four finally came to the party – he abandoned his instincts to play percentage cricket and it came off just fine. Crawley chipped in with 42, Robinson made 58 and Foakes made 47, but they were all consigned to suppport acts. Four wickets for RJ who sliced through the lower order, three for Akash Deep and two for Siraj. From 112 for 5 to 353 all-out, this has been a fine recovery from England, but the pitch has eased out and India will think there’re runs for the taking. Joe Root scored 122* runs and Ollie Robinson scored 58 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 219/7 on Day 2 stumps. England is in a strong position. They made 353 in the first innings and then the two spinners have ensured that India find themselves tottering at 219 for 7. It could’ve been worse if not for the 42-run unbroken stand between Jurel and Kuldeep Yadav, a partnership which has ensured that the deficit hasn’t gone out of hand for the hosts. Still, 134 is a good enough cushion and England will hope that they don’t let India eat away at the deficit tomorrow morning. The pitch has started to help the spinners, it’s turning and it’s staying low, it’s made batting hazardous, but India will feel they could have batted a bit more positively. They’d have wanted a bit of luck going their way as well with 3 LBWs falling to umpire calls, but that’s how the luck rolls on. Bashir was the star performer with 4 wickets in a 31-over spell and Hartley chipped in with a couple. A lot to play for both teams tomorrow, the second new ball ain’t far away and we should have a cracking Sunday. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 73 runs and Shubman Gill scored 38 runs. For England, Shoaib Bashir picked 4 wickets.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 307 runs in their 1st innings. So, England eventually managed a 46-run lead, but the momentum will be with India because they have literally got out of jail. This deficit could easily been over 120 but Jurel and Kuldeep put on their gutsy faces this morning too. While Kuldeep negated Bashir for the majority, Jurel was handling the pacers. When Kuldeep unfortunately played on, Jurel switched gears with Akash Deep in good company. He missed his fifty by four runs on debut and he’s missed s hundred by 10 runs in his second Test match. He showed brilliant temperament and played to match situations with a calm head. He was up against a tough leader who set smart fields with his bowlers bowling accordingly. But in just his second Test match, Jurel showed brilliant match-awareness and application to play an inspiring innings. Bashir had to toil hard today but he’s got a deserving maiden fifer. Turned the game in England’s favour in one session yesterday and ensured India played under-par. Dhruv Jurel scored 90 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 73 runs. For England, Shoaib Bashir picked 5 wickets.

England bowled out for 145 runs in their 2nd innings. Great character and bowling display from India to bowl England out for 145. The target now is 192 – it’s not alarming but it’s not going to be easy because this pitch is tricky, and we have seen England’s spinners extract more because of extra height. One thing was evident. Against a fairly new ball, defending was not a great option because one was going to have your name on it. Crawley’s fifty was pivotal to England setting a challenging total here. He counterattacked when Ashwin was on a hat-trick. Bairstow was looking brisk too. But Kuldeep wreaked havoc as he got the most amount of turn. Four wickets in quick succession ended England’s hope of getting away. Foakes had to shut shop with tailenders. Ashwin did the cleanup job. Over to the Indian batters now. For England, Zak Crawley scored 60 runs and Jonny Bairstow scored 30 runs. For Team India, Ravichandran Ashwin picked 5 wickets.

Team India scored 40 runs in just 8 overs. Now they need another 152 runs with all 10 wickets in hand. What a day for India after being rocked yesterday by Bashir. Jurel and Kuldeep put on determined heads even today. Jurel made an inspiring 90 to ensure the deficit was only 46 and with that momentum, India bowled brilliantly in the second innings to wipe out England cheaply. Ashwin took the onus with the new ball, Kuldeep came in with the semi-new cherry and England danced to his tunes. Ashwin recorded his 35th Test fifer eventually. England’s inexperienced with spin showed. They saw India have great success with new ball spin and tried to follow suit but lack of exposure to the job showed. India were dished out some absolute freebie full toss and overcooked stuff that they could happily cash in with. And India just like that have almost wiped out the deficit without loss and they scored at 5 runs per over. England still have 150+ to play with though. That’s enough time for teams to roll over oppositions in the fourth innings. India have managed to transfer the pressure back on England on what was a great day of Test cricket – couple of fifers, gritty innings, counterattack spin masterclass and some smart batting. Day 3 was very entertaining. Will it be 3-1 or 2-2 going into Dharamsala?

Day 4
Team India scored 192/5 and won the game by 5 wickets. A tantalising Test that went right to the wire and it’s India who have emerged victorious. 3-1 it is and they’ve wrapped up another home series victory. The players shake hands and Jurel gets a big round of hugs – Rahul Dravid is smiling, so is Rohit Sharma. They have been tested to the limits, panicked in Hyderabad and gift-wrapped a Test win to England. But they’ve come roaring back with wins in Vizag, Rajkot and now Ranchi, this will be the sweetest of the trio, they lost the toss, they had to bat last and they’ve beaten the odds. Having started today’s play at 40 for 0, India quickly went from 84 for 0 to 120 for 5 and the demons of Hyderabad would’ve certainly been in the minds of the Indians – not for Shubman Gill and Dhruv Jurel, the two youngsters batted beautifully, rotated the strike and then burst the tap open when victory was in sight. For a change, it was England’s spinners who lost the plot – Bashir was once again excellent, but Hartley did struggle for consistency. Stokes kept changing the field, kept enticing the batters into false shots, but it was India’s day and they romped home with 5 wickets to spare. 3-1 with a Test to go in Dharamsala, the series is won, but there’re 12 WTC points up for grabs. That’s the beauty of Test cricket now and both teams will look to finish the series on a high. For Team India, skipper Rohit Sharma scored 55 runs and Shubman Gill scored 52*. For England Shoaib Bashir picked 3 wickets.
