Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
England captain Ben Stokes won the toss against Team India and decided to bat first at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad

England bowled out for 246 runs in their 1st innings after batting first. Their openers got them off to a quick start – fifty in 11 overs. Ashwin provided the breakthrough and England lost three wickets for five runs. The two Yorkshire batters – Root and Bairstow – forged a fifty partnership to steady the innings. Axar bowled a beauty to remove the latter which provided another opening for India. Root fell playing a premeditated sweep shot and Foakes nicked off against Axar. At 137/6, England were in a spot of bother. Stokes, however, didn’t give up. Like he has done umpteen number of times, the England captain coupled caution with aggression and the lower order batters gave him decent support as they got close to 250. England have a decent first innings total on a spinning track. Skipper Ben Stokes scored 70 runs and Jonny Bairstow scored 37 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja & Ashwin picked 3 wickets each.

Team India scored 119/1 on day 1 stumps. They are trailing by 127 runs with 9 wickets in hand. They’ll believe a strong day with the bat on Day 2 and this will their match for the taking. England need to show plenty of discipline and keep pegging away if they are to stage a fightback. Jaiswal will be looking forward to a big innings as well.

Day 2
Team India scored 421/7 on Day 2 stumps. India’s day! Eight of their nine batters got starts, three of them got to 80s, with one of them still unbeaten and there were five half-century partnerships. Despite picking three frontline spinners, it was Root who was their best spinner today. Removed Jaiswal in the very first over, almost had KL Rahul out for a duck, trapped Bharat lbw and managed to inflict some false shots from the Indian batters. The two inexperienced spinners weren’t consistent enough and Leach didn’t bowl a long spell today. Most of the Indian batsmen perished while trying to play the big shot but they are in a commanding position in this Test match. The two southpaws from Gujarat are hungry for more runs as their team’s lead is approaching 200. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja scored 87 runs and KL Rahul scored 86 runs. For England, debutant Tom Hartley & Rehan Ahmed picked 2 wickets.

Only once India have lost a Test after taking a lead of 190 or more – lost by 63 runs to Sri Lanka in Galle in 2015 after a 1st inngs lead of 192.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 436 runs in their 1sr innings. They add just 15 runs to their overnight score. Wood and Root kept it tight and the Jadeja-Axar were happy to bat defensively. Leach was introduced and Axar scored a couple of boundaries. But Root struck twice in two balls and then Rehan cleaned up Axar. England picked three frontline spinners, but it was Root who was their best in this innings, and he’s finished with his second-best figures. Right then, India has a lead of 190, with almost every batsman getting starts and three of them getting out in the 80s. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja scored 87 runs and KL Rahul scored 86 runs. For England, Joe Root picked 4 wickets.

England scored 316/6 on Day 3 stumps. This has been a masterclass from Ollie Pope which has kept his team in the hunt. The lead is 126 and they’ll start to believe if they can take this to anywhere around 160-170. He gets handshakes from the Indians as he walks away, a standing ovation from his mates and it is his innings which has taken this Test into the fourth day. Could India have done better? Yes, England applied themselves well, the pitch slowed down further, the ball became soft as it grew old, but the Indian trio of spinners were put away by a series of sweeps and reverse sweeps, starting from Duckett and Crawley, and carried forward by Ollie Pope. The diminutive right-hander played a sublime knock, full of positive strokes and threw the bowlers off their lengths. Aiding him was Ben Foakes, the pair adding 112 for the 6th wicket. He was dropped on 110 by Axar Patel and he’s already made India pay. How much will be too much for India? For starters, they still need to take 4 more wickets, but they do have the second new ball coming up shortly. This does look like a new-ball pitch and the match could be decided there.

Day 4
England bowled out for 420 runs and set the target of 231 runs for Team India. Take a bow, Ollie Pope! Every Indian player congratulating him, walks off to a standing ovation and his team-mates applaud and pat him on the back. After conceding a 190-run lead, England have now set India a target of 231. At 163/5, the visitors were in a spot of bother yesterday afternoon. But England’s vice-captain has played a memorable knock. Swept and reverse-swept to unsettle the Indian spinners and stitched three crucial partnerships (112, 64 and 80) with the lower order. England didn’t allow their opponents to roll them over and added 104 runs at a brisk pace to their overnight score. Right then, this is the equation – five sessions remain | 231 runs vs 10 wickets! For England, Ollie Pope scored 196 runs and Ben Duckett scored 47 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 4 wickets.

Team India bowled out for 202 runs and lost the game by 28 runs. An incredible come-from-behind win for England. Their spinners were completely outbowled by their counterparts in the first innings. And despite picking three frontline spinners, it was Joe Root who was the most effective bowler. Almost every Indian batsman perished while trying to score a boundary and the hosts still managed to take a lead of 190. India were in the driver’s seat. That’s when usually most visiting teams capitulate. England/Bazball didn’t. Their openers batted positively like the first innings but they were reduced to 163/5 (effectively minus 27 for five). A day three finish was very much on the cards at that stage. Once again, England/Bazball didn’t give up. Ollie Pope, England’s vice-captain, swept and reverse-swept to unsettle the Indian spinners. He was dropped twice after getting to his hundred and he made the Indians pay. He had his share of luck but England’s No. 3 batted bravely throughout his innings. Stitched three crucial partnerships with Foakes, Rehan Ahmed and Hartley to take England into the lead, give them a glimmer of hope and then eventually a match-winning score. For Team India, skipper Rohit Sharma scored 39 runs and Srikar Bharat scored 28 runs. For England, Tom Hartley picked 7 wickets.
