Day 1
South Africa captain Temba Bavuma won the toss again in the 2nd and final Test against Team India and decided to bat first at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. One change in Proteas and Senuran Muthusamy is playing in the place of Corbin Bosch while two changes for India as injured Gill and Axar Patel is not playing, and Nitish Reddy and Sai Sudharsan are included in XI.

South Africa scored 247/6 on Day 1 stumps. Opting to bat, South Africa started on a cautious and solid note. Markram got a reprieve on 4 and the openers forged a fifty partnership by safely negating the seam movement in the first hour. Bumrah struck in the final over of the morning session to dismiss Markram and Rickelton fell to Kuldeep immediately after the tea break. Stubbs was promoted to three and he along with captain Bavuma batted well and stitched an 84-run stand for the third wicket. Bavuma perished to Jadeja while trying to play an aerial stroke and Stubbs was nipped out by Kuldeep as both the set batters got out in the 40s. Mulder didn’t last long and became the wristspinner’s third scalp. Tony de Zorzi was joined by Muthusamy and the duo batted with a lot of assurance. But just like all the other batters, de Zorzi failed to convert his start as he nicked off an away-angling ball from Siraj in what turned out to be the final over of the day. Even though there wasn’t much help for the bowlers, India didn’t offer too many freebies and picked four wickets in the final session. It’s even-stevens at the end of the opening day of this historic Test in Guwahati.

Stats
– Temba Bavuma is the fastest to register 10 Test wins as captain in just 11 matches. His only miss so far was the rain-affected draw against West Indies at Port-of-Spain last year.
– Simon Harmer in Tests in India: 3 matches, 18 wickets at an average of 16.94 and strike-rate of 37.5
– Yashasvi Jaiswal vs South Africa in Tests: 62 runs in 6 innings at an average of 10.33 and a highest score of 28
– South Africa have used 17 different opening pairs across their 12 bilateral Test series in Asia since 2010. Of those, Markram and Rickelton is only the second pair with two (or more) 50-plus stands in a series, after Dean Elgar and Stiaan van Zyl had as many in Bangladesh in 2015.
– For the first time in the history of Test cricket, each of the top four in a team innings scored 35 or more but none of them reached/crossed 50.
Day 2
South Africa bowled out for huge 489 runs in their 1st innings. What a good job South Africa have done. They have made India toil for 151.1 overs in the field. The top 5 all got starts but did not kick on and at stumps yesterday, India were ahead. But today it has been all South Africa as Marco Jansen and earlier Sen Muthusamy batted really well. The latter didn’t put a foot wrong and got his 100. Jansen smoked 7 huge sixes with such clean hitting and looked set to join Muthusamy in the hundreds list. Not to be. The bowlers for India did manfully with Kuldeep Yadav the pick. Siraj and Bumrah bowled their hearts out too. After all the talk about the pitch at Kolkata, this has been a good wicket and South Africa have not wasted it. You don’t often lose Tests when you make 489. It’s on India to do all the running from here as they are behind in this series. Senuran Muthusamy scored 109 runs and Marco Jansen scored 93 runs. For Team India, Kuldeep Yadav picked 4 wickets each.

Team India scores 9/0 in their first innings on Day 2 stumps. They are trailing by 480 runs with 10 wickets in hand. India’s openers handled the final half hour yesterday with composure under fading light but today demands far more intent. They will need to score positively and ensure South Africa aren’t allowed a sniff, because this bowling attack has more than enough firepower to run through sides if pressure takes over. Should the surface begin to show signs of wear and tear, the task will only become steeper for the hosts. India must dig deep, show character, and avoid the kind of batting collapse that cost them dearly in Kolkata. A spirited fightback is the need of the hour.
That's stumps on Day 2!
Another enthralling day's play comes to an end 🙌#TeamIndia openers will resume proceedings tomorrow ⏳

SA: 489
IND: 9/0
Stats
– Senuran Muthusamy is the third SA batter to register a Test hundred from No.7 or lower vs India, after Quinton de Kock (111, Visakhapatnam, 2019) and Lance Klusener (102*, Cape Town, 1997).
– This is the first time SA have had two 50-plus scores from No.7 or lower in a Test innings against India.
– Only once previously in the last 13 years have two visiting batters gone past 50 from No.7 or lower in a Test innings against India is Liam Dawson (66*) and Adil Rashid (60) at Chepauk in 2016.
– Jansen is the 11th player to be dismissed in the nervous nineties while batting from No.9 or lower in Tests, the first for South Africa, and the second against India, after Mitchell Starc was dismissed for 99 in Mohali in 2013.
– Most sixes in a Test innings for SA
7 – AB de Villiers vs AUS, Cape Town, 2009
7 – Quinton de Kock vs WI, Gros Islet, 2021
7 – Marco Jansen vs IND, Guwahati, 2025
– Jansen’s seven sixes is also the joint-most in a Test innings against India, Shahid Afridi had hit as many during his 103(80) in Lahore in 2006.
– Jansen now has second-most sixes from No.9 or below in a Test innings, after Tim Southee’s nine on his debut vs England in Napier in 2008.
– Only twice before has Jasprit Bumrah sent down more overs in a Test innings than his 32 in this one – both vs England – 36 and 33 vs England in Chennai 2021 and Old Trafford 2025 respectively.
– This is just the third instance that India have fielded 150 overs or more in a Test innings since January 2017. The two previous ones in the timeframe: England’s 578 in 190.1 overs in Chennai in 2021 and Australia’s 480 in 167.2 overs in Ahmedabad in 2023.
– Only once have India won a Test match after conceding more than 489 in the first innings of the game: against Australia at the Adelaide Oval in 2003, a game they won by four wickets after the hosts scored 556 batting first.
Day 3
Team India bowled out for just 201 runs in their 1st innings and South Africa has lead of huge 288 runs. Bavuma checks with his team and then has a word with the coach about the follow-on. He then runs in and has a word with the coach and South Africa are batting again. Bavuma gestures for the light roller. What a show by Marco Jansen and the rest of his team. India started well by adding 65 before Rahul got a good one from Maharaj and edged to slip. Harmer got the important wicket of Jaiswal and then Jansen used the short ball so well to break India’s back. From 96/3, India slipped to 122/7. Then came the rearguard action of Washington Sundar and Kuldeep. The ball got softer and the wicket didn’t do much. The duo showed resistance but that came to an end when Harmer got the outside-edge. The 2nd new ball was taken after that and the end came quickly with Jansen leading the way. Yet another disappointing batting performance by India at home. South Africa have all the aces in this game and they want to bat India out of the game. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs and Washington Sundar scored 48 runs. For South Africa, Marco Jansen picked 6 wickets.

South Africa scored 26/0 in their 2nd innings on Day 3 stumps. They have now lead of huge 314 runs with all 10 wickets in hand. Proteas in complete control of the Guwahati Test. Oh the irony of it all. The talk at this same time yesterday was about how quickly India need to score to make a match out of it. Now it’ll be about some quick runs for South Africa to get in a position to declare tomorrow.

Day 4
South Africa declared their 2nd innings after scoring 260/5 and set the target of mammoth 549 runs to win the 2nd test. 18 overs left in the day and a possible 90 tomorrow. Only two results look likely here – a South Africa win and a draw. Dale Steyn on air reckoned that India might not even try to chase this down. Stubbs the top-scorer in this innings as South Africa piled on the misery. South Africa waited to see if he could get his 100 before declaring, as soon as he got out, the call came. Four for Jadeja but it’s South Africa who are miles ahead in this game. Tristan Stubbs scored 94 runs and Tony de Zorzi scored 49 runs. For Team India, Ravinder Jadeja picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 27/2 on Day 4 stumps. Two wickets for South Africa in that final passage of play, those of Jaiswal and KL Rahul. With three sessions still left in the match, South Africa needs eight wickets to seal victory, while India requires a monumental 522 runs which is a target realistically out of reach. An Indian win is off the table, but if they maintain their composure and show positive intent, they can still harbor hopes of forcing a draw. South Africa’s tactics, however, raised a few eyebrows. By delaying the declaration and persisting with an overly cautious approach, they denied themselves a few valuable overs to take those remaining Indian wickets. In a match crying out for decisive action, their lethargic batting late in the innings made the delayed declaration all the more baffling, a choice that might yet give India an escape route. The spinners are expected to shape the script on Day 5. With Maharaj, Harmer, and Muthusamy in the ranks, plus Markram available to chip in, the Proteas have no shortage of options to exploit the wearing pitch. And then there’s Marco Jansen – arguably the standout performer of this Test. He contributed vital runs in the first innings, and his fiery short-ball barrage unsettled India’s batters on Day 3. South Africa will be counting on him to bring that same intensity as they push for a final-day finish. Join us tomorrow for the live coverage of the final day of the Guwahati Test.

– No team has ever chased a 400-plus total to win a Test match in Asia, the highest successful one being 395 by WI vs BAN in Chattogram in 2021. The highest in India is 387 by the hosts against England in Chennai in 2008.

Day 5
Team India bowled out for 140 runs and lost the game by huge 408 runs and lost the series by 0-2. 25 years since South Africa have won in India. It was the Hansie Cronje-led side who did it in 2000. Now Temba Bavuma joins him. He keeps his unbeaten Test record intact as skipper too. They have dominated this game. India were never in this game once Sen Muthusamy and Marco Jansen forged that stand on day 2. From 247/6, South Africa made 489 and then Jansen used the red-soil pitch to extract disconcerting bounce from it to blow India out in the first innings. They could have enforced the follow-on but decided against it and opted to bat India out of the match. Many questioned South Africa’s battings in the 2nd dig as they tried to get Stubbs to a 100, and declared only when he got out, but the job was done on day 5 with Harmer outstanding again. He took a 6-fer and was well supported by the others. He set India back yesterday with the wicket of KL Rahul and today picked up 5 more. Harry Brook scored unbeaten 111 runs and Joe Root scored 105 runs. For Team India, Mohammed Siraj picked 5 wickets.
South Africa win the 2nd Test by 408 runs.
They also clinch the #INDvSA Test Series by 2-0.
