WTC Final 2023
Game Date: 7th June – 11th June 2023
Game Result: Australia won by 208 runs
Man Of the Match: Travis Head

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss in the world test championship final against Australia and decided to bowl first at the Oval. Ravichandran Ashwin is not playing, and Shardul Thakur is playing today.

Australia scored 327/3 on day 1 stumps. Thanks to some superb batting from Travis Head and Steve Smith. As the cliche Test adage goes, give the first hour to the bowlers, take the next five. Thats exactly what the Aussies have done, as they made hay in the afternoon sun and the diminishing energy levels of the Indian pacers. Travis Head went about in his usual attacking style, while Steve Smith has put out a downpayment for a cute little cottage next to the pitch, as he digs in to bat long. He looks well poised to score another Test hundred, and who knows how far Travis Head can get if he keeps playing this way. For the Indians, a crucial first hour coming up where they need quick wickets to wrestle back some control. The strike pair of Shami and Siraj would have got some good rest, ice baths and massages, and they will start this day with their tails up once again.

AUS: 327/3 on Day 1 stumps

Day 1 Highlights
— India opt to bowl, pick four seamers and drop Ashwin
— Shami and Siraj start well, Khawaja departs for a duck
— Warner and Labuschagne get starts but they fall either side of lunch
— Head counterattacks his way to ton, Smith hangs around and duo stitch a massive partnership

Day 2
Australia bowled out for huge 469 runs in their 1st innings. They have posted a big total on the board. Travis Head and Steve Smith the stars as both the batsmen notched up their respective tons and stitched a mammoth 285-run stand for the fourth wicket. India were made to toil hard and they bowled well today. Picked four wickets in the morning session and removed the last three Australian wickets in the first hour of the middle session. Alex Carey scored a handy 48 before perishing to Jadeja while employing the reverse-sweep. A spirited performance from Siraj who claimed four wickets and, in the process, picked up his 50th Test wicket as well. There’s still some seam movement on offer and there’s uneven bounce as well at times. Smith mentioned India were a bit short with their lengths yesterday. Pretty sure Australia will know what’s the right length to be bowling here. Travis Head scored 163 runs and Steve Smith scored 121 runs. For Team India, Mohammed Siraj picks 4 wickets.

Team India scored 151/5 in their 1st innings. They are still trailing by 318 runs with 5 wickets in hand. Australia on top in this WTC final after two days. Smith got to his ton in the very first over of the match, Travis Head crossed 150, Carey scored 48 and the Aussies added 142 runs to their overnight score. The Indian bowlers picked four wickets in the morning session and wrapped up the last three in the first hour after lunch, but they had conceded 469 after opting to bowl. In reply, India got off to a brisk start with both Gill and Rohit batting positively against Starc and Cummins. In came Boland, applied the brakes with a maiden over and immediately the Australian captain trapped Rohit lbw to win the battle of the captains. Boland and Green cleaned up Gill and Pujara respectively with both of them misjudging the line and shouldering arms. Starc removed Kohli with a snorter, thanks to the extra bounce. At 71/4, India were in a spot of bother. Things almost got worse when Rahane was adjudged lbw on 17 but he escaped it as Cummins had overstepped. Jadeja and Rahane stitched a fifty partnership with the former looking in good touch.

AUS: 469
IND: 151/5 On day 2 stumps

Day 2 Highlights
— Smith brings up his ton, Head goes past 150
— India bowl much better but Australia post a big total
— India lose their top four – all under 20 – to the four Aussie pacers
— Rahane and Jadeja stitch a partnership but the latter falls to Lyon

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 296 runs in their 1st innings and Australia has huge lead of 173 runs. It would have been a bigger one had they held onto their chances in the morning session. They didn’t and the two Mumbaikars Rahane and Thakur – stitched a century partnership. At 152/6, India was in trouble and the duo batted out an entire session after losing Bharat off the second ball of the day. Cummins broke the hundred partnerships in the second over post lunch with Green taking a screamer. Thakur hung around and notched up his third fifty at the Oval in his third innings. Australia were made to toil hard and they managed to remove the last four wickets inside an hour in the middle session. Right then, two and a half days done, two and a half days left, Australia on top. Ajinkya Rahane scored 89 runs and Shardul Thakur scored 51 runs. For Australia, skipper Pat Cummins picked 3 wickets.

Australia scored 123/4 in their 2nd innings on Day 3 stumps. They have 296 runs leads with 6 wickets in hand. Australia got off to a superb start with Boland castling Bharat off the very second ball of the day. They would have looked to wrap up India’s innings quickly. But they dropped three catches, Cummins bowled another no-ball which nullified the lbw decision and that resulted in Rahane and Shardul Thakur stitching a spirited century stand. India, who were in a spot of bother at 152/6, not only avoided the follow-on but also got close to 300. Despite the lower-order fight from India, the Aussies got a healthy first innings lead of 173 runs. With two and a half sessions left in the day, Australia could have batted India out of the game. But India were disciplined with the ball. Siraj struck early by removing Warner and the two Queensland batters got into a shell playing very defensively. Khawaja chased a wide ball from Umesh to nick off. Smith walked in at four and batted positively and increased the scoring rate. He scored the bulk of the runs in the fifty partnerships with Labuschagne but he fell to Jadeja trying to slog one wildly. Jadeja removed the other centurion from the first innings Head as well as he got the ball to turn sharply off the rough. Marnus and Green shut shop and ensured no further setbacks till stumps. A lead of 296 on a deteriorating pitch is already a big one and Australia are clearly the favourites to win this final. But they won’t take India for granted.

AUS: 469 & 123/4 On day 3 stumps
IND: 296

Day 3 Highlights
— Bharat gone second ball of the day but Australia don’t hold onto their chances
— India avoid the follow-on, thanks to the Rahane-Thakur century partnership
— Rahane misses his ton, Thakur notches up his fifty and Australia take a 173-run lead
— India bowl with a lot of discipline, pick 4 wickets to stay in the Test

Day 4
Australia declared their 2nd innings for 270/8d. The target for India is 444, with a total of 137 overs scheduled across the remainder of this Test. Australia came out with the intent to score quick runs after lunch, and they managed to do so thanks to Starc and Carey. The two of them added 93 for the seventh wicket in 120 balls to give Australia the added cushion. Going to be a daunting challenge for India now to get anywhere close to the trophy. Alex Carey scored 61 runs and Marnus Labuschagne scored 41 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picks 3 wickets.

Team India scored 164/3 on day 4 stumps. They need 280 runs in the last day with 7 wickets in hand. Another gripping day of Test cricket. One day left in this final and this is the equation – Australia need 7 wickets | India need 280 runs. The Aussies batted conservatively in the morning session and scored just 78 runs for the loss of two wickets. They batted far more aggressively post lunch with Carey and Starc adding 93 runs for the seventh wicket which allowed Cummins to declare with one and a half sessions left in the Test. Chasing a daunting total, the Indian openers scored briskly. Green pulled off a screamer at gully to dismiss at the stroke of tea. But India kept the scoreboard ticking in the final session as Rohit and Pujara looked in good touch. The Indian captain fell to Lyon in the latter’s first over playing a sweep shot and Pujara followed him in the very next over playing an uncharacteristic shot. Australia had their tails up but Kohli and Rahane ensured that there were no further setbacks. They batted quite fluently as they forged a 71-run partnership.

AUS: 469 & 270/8d/4
IND: 296 & 164/3 On day 4 stumps

Day 4 Highlights
— India start well with the ball but Carey & Starc score freely
— Cummins declares and India are set a target of 444
— Rohit and Gill score briskly; Green takes a screamer (controversial) to remove Gill
— Rohit, Pujara throw away their starts with both of them falling within a span of 6 balls
— Kohli and Rahane bat fluently, forge a fifty partnership and take it to the final day

Day 5
Team India bowled out for 234 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the WTC final by 208 runs. Australia add the only missing silverware to their overflowing trophy cabinet. A comprehensive win here at the Oval. Australia were the favourites to win this but India still had an outside chance to win at the start of the final day. There weren’t too many demons in the pitch and India looked untroubled in the first half an hour. Kohli chased a wide delivery outside off and nicked off as Smith took a blinder at second slip. That turned out to be the killer blow. Boland provided it, removed Jadeja in the very same over and it was one-way traffic after that. Starc was expensive but he managed to nip out India’s top run-scorer of the Test. The tail couldn’t hang around for a long time as Lyon – Australia’s greatest offspinner finished with a 4-fer. Australia were asked to bat first and once they saw off the initial threat, they were always in the driver’s seat. India were playing catch-up throughout the Test and none of their batters managed to convert their starts. If we have to pick one defining moment from this final, it has to be Head’s knock in the first innings and he is rightly the Player of the Match. Virat Kohli scored 49 runs and Ajinkya Rahane scored 46 runs. For Australia, Nathan Lyon picks 4 wickets.

AUS: 469 & 270/8d/4
IND: 296 & 234
