India scored 210/2 in their 20 overs. This is the highest total in this world cup. India have fallen ten runs short of doubling their score against the Kiwis, such has been their dominance in this innings. It was a relatively sedate start, given what was to come. If India restrict Afghanistan to 99 or less, their NRR will be more than Afghanistan’s and New Zealand’s a numerical representation of how badly India have started this tournament, and the haplessness of their losses against Pakistan and New Zealand. However, Rahul and Rohit launched a calculated assault soon after and once they were back in the hut, the platform was set for the finishers Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya left it all out there, adding 62 off 26 between them and perhaps giving India a sniff to return into reckoning. Afghanistan unable to chase the target and scored 144/7 in their 20 overs and lost the game by 66 runs. The tournament hosts (technically of course) live to fight another day. And in some style too. For those in doubt, here is a massive update India’s net run rate has stormed into positive territory. Who would have thought of this especially after the hiding they got in the last two games? Well, their batters were on the rampage today and once the target was 211 Afghanistan were always in trouble. They lost early wickets and although Gurbaz played a breezy cameo, his dismissal brought about a lull in proceedings. The result was no longer that relevant because it was inevitable, it was thereafter a tussle for net run rate between the two teams. In the end, you’d think neither are too disappointed, although India certainly are the happier side. Afghanistan would dearly have loved another 20-30 runs and could have got there if not for the early wickets. Karim Janat scored 42* of 22 balls and skipper Mohammad Nabi scored 35 of 32 balls.
