Story: The plot follows India’s revocation of article 370 (special status of Jammu and Kashmir) and its impact on a Pakistani General Qadir (Manish Wadhwa) who wants India to pay for this mistake. He reaches out to the formidable Jim (John Abraham), an Ex-RAW agent wronged by his own people.
He is joined by his ravishing accomplice Rubai (Deepika Padukone) an ex-ISI agent with ambiguous motives. RAW’s Nandini (Dimple Kapadia) who is now head of Joint Operation and Covert Research (JOCR) gets a glimpse of Rubai in France with whom she has had sort of a past connection. Due to this development, she decides to meet Pathaan (Shah Rukh Khan), an agent who was once one of the best agents for India but has now supposedly gone rogue.
Three years ago, Pathaan had come across Rubina Mohand from thereon, things went downhill for him. But the country right now needs Pathaan to save itself from the clutches of Jim. As time progresses, Pathaan gets to know that Jim’s sinister plan includes letting loose a virus which can threaten the very existence of human beings wherever it is let loose. Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas on first day because this is SRK comeback movie, and this is part of YRF SPY universe.
Pathaan is an exiled RAW field operative is assigned to take down “Outfit X”, a private terrorist organization that is planning massive attacks on India.
Story has so many twists and turns that it keeps you completely hooked. Yes, the story may not be novel but in spite of that, it doesn’t get predictable or boring. Screenplay is first-rate. The pace is so phenomenal that the viewers do not get any time to think. The drama is not just interesting but also pretty engaging and engrossing. While keeping the tension alive throughout the length of the film, Raghavan has made sure to add light moments in the drama so that we get a breather after short intervals, in the midst of the tension-ridden drama. Some scenes and sequences deserve special mention. Siddharth Anand’s direction is superb. His narration keeps the audience engrossed right from the word ‘go’. He deserves full marks for making a film on this scale and for keeping the narration so tight. The major highlight of this movie is Tiger and Pathaan fighting with Russian Army.
On the flipside, logic takes a backseat in several places. The way Pathaan conveniently enters even the most high-security zones and escapes almost unscathed is difficult to digest. The sequences that indicate an underlying element of romance between SRK and Deepika lead to a dip in the pace and divert from the core plot. The Afghanistan episode in the climax is predictable. However, the makers compensate for these shortcomings with some high-octane action and thrilling scenes and hence, one will not complain much after coming out of the cinema hall. It follows the template of a typical spy film. Instead of focusing on a singular mission, the conflict keeps shifting at regular intervals without a proper closure in some cases, which is a minor drawback.
Overall, movie is true-blue commercial, masala entertainer that’s not trying to send across any message or be a social commentary on the current state of affairs in the country. It’s fun, non-fussy and fantastic at the same time. Go watch it for Shah Rukh Khan and you would only come back with a smile and maybe grooving a bit. Don’t miss the scene just before end credits for it’s not every day you see two superstars in a banter about their stardom. My view on this movie Highly Recommended
