New Zealand scored 164/6 in their 20 overs. NZ finish with a competitive total, but they have fallen short by 15-20 runs in the end. They should have got 175-180 at least, but India pulled things back in the death overs. The Kiwis lost an early wicket in the form of Mitchell, but Chapman and Guptill had a pivotal partnership thereafter. They took their time in the first 10 overs, but following that the duo managed to up the ante as they kept striking the ball to all parts of the ground. Chapman in the process notched up his maiden T20I fifty for New Zealand, but Guptill hit a few lusty blows following the left-hander’s departure, before he was dismissed by Chahar. Ashwin‘s over where he claimed two wickets is where India managed to pull things back. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was impressive with the new ball, and he bowled an economical 19th over where he conceded only 5 runs. Martin Guptill scored 70 of 42 balls and Mark Chapman scored 63 of 50 balls. For India Bhuvi and Ashwin picks 2 wickets each.

Team India chased down the target by scoring 166/5 in 19.4 overs. A quick handshake between Pant and Axar as they trudge off towards the dressing room. Coach Rahul Dravid looks calm and composed, much like his playing days. All smiles. India needed 23 off the last 4 overs with 8 wickets in hand and New Zealand just went onto prove why they have been in the finals of that recently-concluded World Cup. The pace trio of Boult-Ferguson-Southee went 2, 5 & 6 in their respective final overs, picking up two crucial wickets while at it and that meant the game was back in balance at the start of the final over. Unfortunately for New Zealand, none of their main bowlers (pacers) had overs left which prompted Southee to go with the part-time dibbly-dobbly bowling of Daryl Mitchell who had his moments of panic before Pant sealed it with a boundary. Right from toss to death bowling to setting an ideal template to bat in the middle overs, India got everything right bar the finishing touches which is something they might want to address in the next couple of games. Suryakumar Yadav scored 62 of 40 balls and Skipper Rohit Sharma scored 48 of 36 balls. For New Zealand Trent Boult pick 2 wickets for 31 runs in his 4 overs quota.
We are off to a winning start! 👏 👏
