Man Of the Match: Ravindra Jadeja

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss in the 1st test against Team India and decided to bat first at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Nagpur. Suryakumar Yadav and Srikar Bharat Debut for Team India while Todd Murphy debut for Australia.

Australia bowled out for 177 runs in their 1st innings after batting first. Ravindra Jadeja leads his side off the field. In his comeback game, the left-armer picked a brilliant fifer which included the scalps of three set batters. Opting to bat, the Aussies lost their openers cheaply to pace. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith steadied the ship with a half-century stand and both look settled at the crease. But Jadeja struck post lunch and the visitors slipped from 84/2 to 109/5. Keeper Carey and Handscomb stitched a fifty partnership with the former sweeping and reverse-sweeping for fun. But his innings was cut short by Ashwin. The spin-twins didn’t allow the Australian tail to wag. Impressive bowling performance and the onus is now on the batters to deliver the goods for the hosts. Marnus Labuschagne scored 49 runs and Steven Smith scored 37 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picks 5 wickets.

Team India scored 77/1 on day 1 stumps. They are still trailing by 100 runs with 9 wickets in hand. The late wicket of Rahul has given Australia a bit of a lift going back at stumps, but they have their backs to the wall here after just the first day. The enormity of the challenge for them is quite clear if it wasn’t already. So much talk about the pitch coming into this Test. But this is no minefield as India have showed with the bat. There was hardly a chance created till Murphy got one to bite sharply against Rahul. Just that India’s spinners were too relentless earlier, giving absolutely nothing away. Skipper Rohit Sharma is unbeaten on 56* while Australian debutant Todd Murphy picks the only fallen wickets.

AUS: 177
IND: 77/1 at day 1 stumps

Day 2
Team India scored 321/7 on day 2 stumps. Thay have now lead of 144 runs with 3 wickets in hand. India’s day but the visitors can be proud of their fight. Rohit held the top-order together with a classy innings. Todd Murphy continued to impress as he prised out Ashwin, Pujara and Kohli in quick succession. Lyon crashed through SKY’s gate, but Jadeja came in and dropped anchor to take over the baton from his captain. Cummins, who looked off colour till the afternoon bowled a brilliant spell with the second new ball where he sent Rohit’s off stump cartwheeling after a dropped chance at slip in the same over. Murphy got Bharat to complete his fifer and it looked like India weren’t going to gain great first innings advantage but Axar and Jadeja really wore out the Aussie bowlers with their defence and attack. Axar was the aggressor in that unbeaten 81-run stand. India currely 144 runs ahead. Already a very good lead. Pitch still good enough to carry on if the batters adapt. The Aussies quickly need to wrap this up and dig deep tomorrow to stay in this game. Ravindra Jadeja unbeaten on 66* and Axar Patel unbeaten on 52*. For Australia, debutant Todd Murphy picks 5 wickets.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 400 runs in their 1st innings and they have now lead of 224 runs. Another session pocketed by the hosts. The visitors managed to nip out Jadeja early as the all-rounder misjudged a straight ball from Murphy. But they couldn’t wrap up the tail quickly. Shami got a reprieve on 6 as Boland put down a sitter and Australia were made to toil hard. The Axar-Shami duo stitched a half-century partnership. The latter struck three sixes off Murphy but the debutant eventually dismissed him. Axar Patel batted superbly, recorded his highest Test score and took India’s lead over 220. Skipper Rohit Sharma scored 120 runs and Axar Patel scored 84 runs. For Australia, Todd Murphy picks 7 wickets.

Australia bowled out for just 91 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the game by an innings and 132 runs. They have been hammered here in Nagpur, getting bowled out in a session with India’s spinners making the pitch look menacing. Ashwin and Jadeja were near unplayable out there, more so against a clueless batting order, bowling them out for just 91. To be fair, it did look difficult the moment Ashwin took the new ball, finding a good amount of turn and racing to a five-for in just his 10th over. He beat Jadeja to the milestone this time, not that the latter looked any less threatening. The two of them were so deadly that Axar Patel only managed a solitary wicket in the entire Test.
