Jai Bhim Review: Powerful and hard-hitting legal drama based on real life incident
Jai Bhim Movie Rating: 4 Stars

Just watched Jai Bhim movie on Amazon Prime Video. So let’s focus on the cast, release date story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Suriya, Prakash Raj, Rajisha Vijayan, Lijomol Jose, Rao Ramesh and K.Manikandan
Director: Tha.Se. Gnanavel
Release Date: 2nd November 2021 on Amazon Prime Video

Story: Film opens with a potentially controversial scene and you couldn’t ask for a scene to leave a harder impact at the very beginning of the film. We see a group of people just released from a local jail and their families are patiently waiting to receive them. As they walk out, they’re stopped and about their caste. Those from the lower most castes are told to stay back, booked in pending cases and handed over to the local police who pay the prison officer to take them away.

On the other hand Rajakannu (Manikandan) and Singhani (Lijomol Jose) are a tribal couple who live at Konamalai near Viluppuram. They lives in a hut and despite their poverty they are contented and happy especially with their daughter Alli going to school and a second child on its way. Rajakannu leaves for a faraway place in search of work as he promises her to build a house. He is also a snake-charmer. Days before he left for work the village’s president calls him to catch a snake in their home. When some jewelry was stolen in the president’s home the police were naturally suspicious of him.

Unable to find Rajakannu the police pick up the pregnant wife and a few other men from the tribe including Rajakannu’s brother Irutappan. Sengani is later let go not before being beaten and kicked multiple times but for Rajakannu and a couple of others. There is no respite from the harrowing violence unleashed upon by the men in khakhi. When Singhani hears that the three men have escaped and their whereabouts unknown she reached out to Chandru (Suriya) who is a righteous lawyer who fights for the downtrodden. But can they uncover the truth with an entire system standing against them?

Positives
1. Excellent Performances
2. Story
3. Direction
4. Cinematography

Negatives
1. Length
2. Music
3. Excessive violence scene

Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in my free time as it looks one time watch due to excellent story based on real life incident.

Based on a true incident in 1993, which involves a case fought by Justice K Chandru, it follows Sengani and Rajakannu, a couple from the Irular tribe. The latter was convicted by the police due, and was later missing from the police station. Senggeni seeks the help of an advocate Chandru to seek justice for her husband.

Jai Bhim instances related to Irula tribes in Villupuram district in Tamil Nadu, the story takes place in 1995. The Telugu dubbed version is set in Konaseema in Andhra Pradesh. The film begins with the note that it is based on real incidents. However it is definitely not a flawless film. The violence in the film which is necessary for the initial story build-up and to convey the brutality faced by the protagonist becomes excessive and unbearable after a point. The courtroom scenes remind certain similar sequences from some of the earlier films at places. Also the duration of the movie might not appeal to the audiences who expect a crisp watch.

Movie powerfully captures the abuse and humiliation that is heaped upon the underprivileged by those in power and the kind of defiance it will take to get them justice. The narrative completely focuses on the tribals, the police harassment, and the courtroom proceedings. More than anything else, the director skillfully projects how the marginalized people land in wrong cases. All in all it is a gripping legal drama, with good performances but has a raw approach. It might appeal to those who like documentary-like serious movies but still it cannot be missed. My view on this movie Highly Recommended
