1st Test
Game Date: 19th September – 23rd September 2024
Game Result: Team India won by 280 runs
Man Of the Match: Ravichandran Ashwin

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto won the toss against Team India and decided to bowl first at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. India is playing with 3 seamers and 2 spinners in this game.

Team India scored 339/6 runs on day 1 stumps in their 1st innings after batting first. From 144/6 to 339/6, it’s been an excellent recovery from India thanks to this unbeaten 195-run partnership between Ashwin and Jadeja. On an overcast morning and a seam bowling friendly surface, Bangladesh opted to bowl. Hasan Mahmud removed Rohit, Gill and Kohli inside the first hour. Jaiswal and Pant stitched a fifty partnership and Mahmud came back to nip out the latter. Up against a disciplined bowling attack, Jaiswal batted patiently to notch up a half-century before he was worked over by Nahid Rana. KL Rahul fell in the very next over and India were in a spot of bother. That’s when the spin twins joined hands to bail their team out of trouble with the bat. Ashwin was quick to get off the blocks, played some exquisite shots and batted fluently to record his second Test hundred at his home ground. Jadeja too scored at a brisk rate and Bangladesh couldn’t put any sort of pressure on the duo. After picking six wickets in the first two sessions, they ended up conceding 163 runs in the final session without getting a breakthrough. India will be the happier side at the moment, and it’ll be interesting to see how the pitch behaves as the match progresses. Bangladesh’s over-rate was poor today and they’ll hope to make early inroads with the second new ball. Ravichandran Ashwin scored 102* runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 86* runs. For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud picked 4 wickets.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 376 runs in their 1st innings. Good passage of play for Bangladesh as they wrap up the Indian innings. They took the second new ball straightaway and Taskin bowled much better than yesterday to remove three wickets. Hasan Mahmud came back to nip out Bumrah and finish with a fifer. From 144/6 to 376/10, it’s been an excellent recovery, thanks to the 199-run stand between Ashwin and Jadeja. The former batted fluently yesterday to notch up his 6th Test ton, second at home. The sun is beating down and there’s something in the pitch to keep everyone interested. Ravichandran Ashwin scored 113 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 86 runs. For Bangladesh, Hasan Mahmud picked 5 wickets.

Bangladesh bowled out for just 149 runs in their 1st innings. Exceptional from India to bowl Bangladesh out in just over 1.5 sessions. Apart from the Shakib-Litton stand, nothing worked for Bangladesh. That was the time to cash in as the pitch had eased out and spin was proving ineffective, the pacers were tired and out of the attack. Litton played a sweep for the first time and holed out and soon Shakib followed with a reverse-sweep on to boot. Then the inevitable end of innings followed. Earlier it was Bumrah and Akash Deep who tore through the top-order before lunch. Bumrah as he so often does, was just in a class of his own. The others just complemented him and Bangladesh just did not have the answers. Most likely India will bat and put this game beyond Bangladesh’s reach, if it is not beyond them already. Shakib Al Hasan scored 32 runs and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 27* runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 81/3 in their 2nd innings. They have now led of 308 runs with 7 wickets in hand. Brilliant day for India and they are in a commanding position in this Test. This match is progressing at a very brisk rate with 17 wickets falling today. India didn’t enforce the follow-on and decided to bat again having gained a lead of 227. Jaiswal struck a couple of boundaries in the very first over, Rohit got off the mark with a boundary. But both of them nicked behind. Shubman Gill and Kohli joined hands and they were batting quite comfortably. Mehidy managed to trap Kohli lbw in the latter part of the final session which wasn’t reviewed and replays showed that there was a faint inside edge. Pant hit a four and six off Shakib while Gill has looked solid in this innings. India lead by 308 runs and they’ll look to bat Bangladesh out of this contest. Tune in tomorrow to find out how the action unfolds.

Day 3
Team India declared their 2nd innings for 287/4 and set the target of huge 515 runs to Bangladesh. Looks a mountain away for a dispirited Bangladesh. Shakib comes to shake Shubman Gill’s hand. He is welcomed by the Indian team. A loud cheer as Bumrah jogs to the ground. With a healthy lead, India piled it on with hundreds from Gill and Pant. Three early wickets fell but their stand has given India a mammoth lead. Since India scored at a good pace, Rohit had the time to declare early. Gill after a first innings duck, cashed in on the 2nd essay scoring his 3rd Test ton in his last 5 games. Pant in his comeback game looked good in both innings and made it count with a 100 against a tired Bangladeshi attack. After being blown away for just 149 in the first innings, Bangladesh needs a much better batting effort to save face. Shubman Gill scored 119* runs and Rishabh Pant scored 109 runs. For Bangladesh, Mehidy Hasan Miraz picked 2 wickets.

Bangladesh scored 158/4 runs in their 2nd innings. They need 357 runs with 6 wickets in hand. Another day dominated by India.Pant and Gill got off to a watchful start in the first hour before shifting gears. Both of them registered their centuries and Rohit Sharma declared with 2.5 days remaining in the Test, setting the visitors a target of 515. Bangladesh, who lasted just one and a half sessions in the first innings, started on a good note. The openers remained unscathed before tea and forged a fifty partnership. But both of them were dismissed in quick succession in the final session. Jaiswal’s blinder resulted in Zakir falling to Bumrah for the second time in the match. Post that, Ashwin – who went wicketless in the first innings – picked three wickets. Mominul was cleaned up by a beautiful delivery and Rahim fell while trying to be aggressive, thanks to Rahul’s diving catch. India’s catching has been excellent throughout this Test. And there’s a lot more help for the spinners. Ashwin troubled the batters with spin and bounce. Shanto, though, has played the off spinner really well. The captain batted positively and hit three sixes, all against Ashwin to bring up a fine half-century. With two days left in this Test, the equation is 357 runs vs 6 wickets! Expect more help for the spinners as the game progresses. India are mighty favorites to wrap up the match tomorrow. Let’s see if Bangladesh can put up a fight. There’s forecast for some rain as well. Tune in tomorrow to find out how the action unfolds. Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 51* runs and for Team India, Ravichandran Ashwin picked 3 wickets.

Shanto and Shakib, the overnight batsmen, showed a bit of resistance in the first hour and remained unscathed today morning. But the local lad came into the attack after the drinks break and made light work of Bangladesh. The tourists slipped from 205/5 to 234/10 with the two spinners ruling the roost. Captain Shanto top-scored with 82 and batted superbly against the spinners but he was fighting a lone battle. While Jadeja picked three wickets, Ashwin finished with a six-for in addition to his century on the opening day.
