1st ODI (India Vs South Africa)
Game Date: 21st December 2023
Details:
South Africa stand-in skipper Aiden Markram won the toss and elected to field first in the 1st game of ODI series against Team India at JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi.

Team India scored 349/8 in their 50 overs after batting first. They might’ve slowed down after the initial 20 overs, but they still managed to finish with a big score here in Ranchi. With dew expected to play a significant role, India always needed to make an above par score and they’ll have to thank Virat Kohli’s 120-ball 135 for pushing them to a challenging score. On a pitch which definitely slowed down and brought variations into play as the innings went on, Kohli batted on a different planet altogether. It wasn’t a normal Kohli innings, for once he was willing to play his shots and struck as many as 7 sixes in his innings. Only twice had he hit more than 5 sixes in an ODI before and this was his first against South Africa. With Rohit Sharma (51-ball 57) equally adept, the pair added 136 runs for the second wicket to put India in control. The visitors did salvage a fightback in the middle overs, but a couple of breezy innings from KL Rahul (56-ball 60) and Ravindra Jadeja (20-ball 32) ensured that India went close to the 350-run mark. South Africa’s fielding was largely spot-on, but de Zorzi’s bad miss off Rohit when the batter was on 1 could still prove costly. Can the visitors chase it down? Will dew play a role in the second innings? Virat Kohli scored 135 runs of 120 balls and skipper Kl Rahul scored 60 runs of 56 balls. For South Africa, Ottneil Baartman, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch and Nandre Burger picked 2 wickets each.

South Africa unable to chase the target and bowled out for 332 runs in 49.2 overs. They made a good match of it despite their early struggles in the chase. They were 11/3 as Harshit Rana bowled beautifully with the new ball and then slipped to 130/5. But a blinder of a knock from Marco Jansen along with a steady half-century from Matthew Breetzke brought them right back. Their partnership of 97 came off just 69 balls with Jansen doing most of the heavy lifting before Kuldeep’s double-strike gave India some breathing space. But the visitors kept coming hard with Corbin Bosch taking over the mantle. The dew didn’t make it easy for the Indian bowlers either. However, they did enough to hold on in the end. Matthew Breetzke scored 72 runs of 80 balls and Marco Jansen scored 70 runs of 39 balls. For Team India, Kuldeep Yadav picked 4 wickets for 68 runs in his 10 overs quota.
