Gehraiyaan Review: This modern day complex relationship has depth that’s worthy of being explored
Gehraiyaan Movie Rating: 2.5 Stars
Finally watched Gehraiyaan movie on Amazon Prime Video. So let’s focus on the cast, release date story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.
Cast: Deepika Padukone, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ananya Panday, Dhairya Karwa, Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor
Director: Shakun Batra
Release Date: 11th February 2022 on Amazon Prime Video
Story: Alisha (Deepika Padukone) is a yoga instructor based in Mumbai and developing a yoga-based app, for which she requires funding. She has a strained relationship with her father Vinod (Naseeruddin Shah). Her mother (Pavleen Gujral) died by suicide after Vinod forcibly relocated to Nashik with his family. She is in a relationship with Karan (Dhairya Karwa) who is an advertising professional who quit his job to write his novel. Their relationship also develops cracks due to lack of communication.
Alisha’s cousin Tia (Ananya Panday) invites the former and Karan to Tia’s farmhouse in Alibaug. Tia knows Karan very well too and she wants Alisha and Karan to meet her boyfriend, Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi). The foursome meet and Alisha and Zain get attracted to each other without the knowledge of their respective partners.
Zain even arranges funding for Alisha’s yoga app. Zain himself has a big business for which he picks up funds from the market and also from girlfriend Tia’s family. His business is not very clean as far as the funding is concerned. As luck would have it, his business comes under the Enforcement Directorate’s radar informed by his business associate Jitesh (Rajat Kapoor).
Alisha and Tia have skeletons in their cupboards, which come tumbling out as the drama progresses. Likewise, the skeletons in the cupboards of their parents also come tumbling out. Zain’s skeletons in his professional life, of course, are out. Zain is already processing this information when Alisha turns up and tells him that she’s pregnant with his child. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

1. Performances
2. Screenplay
3. Direction
4. Story

3. Length
Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in my free time because trailer looks different about complex relationship with amazing star-cast.
Alisha runs her own yoga studio while seeking investors to back her yoga phone app. Flashbacks reveal a wealthy and idyllic childhood with extended family. For reasons she can’t understand, her father dragged her and her mother away from that happiness into a life of isolation and need, which somehow led to her mother’s suicide. All of that is the backdrop to an affair Alisa begins with her cousin Tia’s fiancé, who is a go-getter real estate whiz kid who seems to have money to burn.
Story story is layered and offers an interesting take on modern-day relationships which is rarely seen in our films. The first hour is predictable and it takes a while to get a hang of the narrative style of the film. There’s hardly any funny punchline and hence, there’s very limited scope for humor. However, it’s not a problem as there’s a lot of interesting stuff throughout the film. Director is just not touching upon the relationship-based complexities but also the business angle. The comment he makes on this aspect apart from cheating in relationships adds a lot to the film. Also, the film has a niche appeal and hence, a major section of the audience would find it difficult to relate to the goings-on.
On the whole, Gehraiyaan is a mature relationship drama but has a niche appeal. However the bravura performances and the exciting climax makes the film a decent watch. But the orthodox audience will not appreciate the film. My view on this movie Time Pass but don’t watch this with family.
