Farzi Review: A refreshing and intensely gripping scamster saga where the pros far outweigh the cons
Farzi Web Series Rating: 3.5 Stars

Just watched Farzi Web Series on Amazon Prime Video. So, let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this web series.

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Vijay Sethupathi, Kay Kay Menon, Raashii Khanna, Bhuvan Arora, Zakir Hussain, Chittranjan Giri, Jaswant Singh Dalal, Amol Palekar, Kubbra Sait and Regina Cassandra
Director: Raj & DK
Release Date: 10th February 2023 on Prime Video
Duration: 8 Episodes/ 50 Minutes

Story: Series is all about the artist and his art. Disappointed with the divide between rich and poor and after failing to keep his nanu’s (Amol Palekar) revolutionary journal Kranti Patrika in operation Sunny (Shahid Kapoor) decides to take matters into his own hands and starts creating counterfeit money with the assistance of his friend Firoz (Bhuvon Arora).

They create fake currency that is so close to the original that it is nearly impossible to tell the difference. Through their good friend Anees (Saqib Ayub) and his acquaintance they meet Lakdawala (Lokesh Mittal) who agrees to buy their notes and pay them handsomely. Through the money earned, they are able to loan and save the press.

Meanwhile, Michael (Vijay Sethupathi) is a righteous officer who passionately believes that the threat of counterfeit currency should be eliminated once and for all. Through his association with finance minister Pawan Gahlot (Zakir Hussain), he’s able to have his own task force, specially dedicated to this cause. He enlists Megha Vyas (Raashii Khanna) of the RBI as he’s impressed with her invention, a chip named CT-600 that can easily detect fake notes instantly.

However, the target of Michael and his task force is not Sunny but Mansoor Dalal (Kay Kay Menon) who is the biggest player in the counterfeit currency network. Soon Sunny’s art meets its connoisseur in Mansoor, who quickly gets him involved in his cartel making him complicit in a major worldwide crime. In no time, Sunny’s needs become his wants and it’s no longer about his nanu or his press, but it’s just his greed that gets neck-deep involved in counterfeiting. What happen next is all about this series.

Positives
1. Excellent Performance
2. Direction
3. Story
4. Climax
5. Dialogues

Negatives
1. Length
2. Initial Episodes
3. Unnecessary Sub-plot

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this web-series, planned to watch on premiere day because loved the trailer and its intriguing storyline.

Sunny is a brilliant small-time artist is catapulted into the high-stakes world of counterfeiting when he creates the perfect fake currency note, even as Michael, a fiery, unorthodox task force officer wants to rid the country of the counterfeiting menace. In this thrilling cat-and-mouse race, losing is not an option.

Farzi story is superb and has all the trappings of a fun entertainer. Counterfeiting is never explored on screens and creators go all in. From intricate and technical details about making fake notes to their distribution and infiltration into the economy, this thrilling web series is dangerously detailed. Such that we wonder if it can be misused by criminals. However, despite the realistic tone of the show, the makers use a lot of cinematic convenience that feels quite unbelievable and at times downright preposterous. Especially, when a fiscal crime of this magnitude is being carried out in the country and only a few good men and one woman seem hell-bent on stopping it. The series is peppered with several fun and thrilling scenes that keep the interest going. However, the pace is a problem, and a few plot points are difficult to digest.

The writers have done a brilliant job here with meticulously etched-out characters and a gripping plot. A special shout-out to the dialogue writer too. The entire series is full of seeti maar dialogues. Exchanges between Vijay Sethupathi and Zakir Hussain are hilarious. With 8 episodes of 55-60 minutes each, it is an intriguing watch, but with too much detailing, it tends to get exhausting in parts. Although the show manages to keep its viewers hooked till the end, the makers could have easily avoided getting into the details of printing a counterfeit currency note. The makers have kept the series open-ended, so viewers can expect Farzi Season 2 in the future. The series hints at it with Vijay Sethupathi’s Michael collaborating with a certain undercover agent from Raj and DK’s espionage world. While they would solve crimes together, they would also have a lot to talk over a few drinks with all the expletives flying across the room.

Excellent performances being the icing on the cake in this series. However, the impact is affected due to the long length and certain loopholes in the script and hence, it doesn’t reach the level of Raj-DK’s previous outings. Despite a few wobbles, it’s an enjoyable watch. My view on this web-series is Recommended
