Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas on release date as trailer and big fan of Vidyut Jammwal. In the film, a patient with fregoli delusion becomes involved in an operation to stop a North Indian syndicate from distributing guns across Tamil Nadu.
Dil Madharaasi story is about a young man with a rare delusional disorder was recruits by NIA to stop a crime syndicate that is plotting to introduce gun culture to Tamil Nadu. It is made to cater to the action lovers, and the movie offers some enjoyable moments for its target audience. Through the movie, AR Murugadoss attempts to deliver a social message about the harmful effects of gun culture in our country, and his intention is appreciable. There’s some clever writing, like why Malathi falls in love with Raghu despite knowing his mental condition and how the issue of gun culture is also a personal one for her as well. The way the personal is tied to Prem and his team, with a superb payoff that involves Chirag, another gangster in Virat’s team, is one of the handful of truly whistle-worthy moments in the film. And the manner in which director conveys his message through Raghu’s disorder is also effective. The film features well-choreographed, sleek action blocks that look visually impressive on the big screen. Cinematographer Sudeep Elamo did an impressive job with neatly executed camera movements during the action set pieces. Sivakarthikeyan once again amuses with his performance while Vidyut Jammwal as the antagonist is a winner despite his limited screen presence.
Biggest letdown is a story which doesn’t have strong legs to stand on. Why an NIA officer would send a commoner to stop a gun-smuggling racket is not clear and, therefore, it doesn’t make sense when Prem asks Raghu to go on the job and this merely because Raghu, as it is, wants to end his life! A.R. Murugadoss’ screenplay is interesting at places, but the predictability factor comes out loud and clear. While the film clearly had two parallel plots is a love story and an illegal syndicate taking over Tamil Nadu and destroying it, the latter turned into a secondary plot with the former love plot not doing anything substantial except for taking up screen space! While the first half entirely focussed on Raghu and Malathi’s love story setting up the syndicate plot in tits and bits, the second half of the film lost the plot entirely! A.R. Murugadoss’ direction is ordinary. Anirudh Ravi Chander’s music is also not up to the mark. Overall, movie is an action-packed entertainer that clicks only in parts. Sivakarthikeyan and Vidyut Jamwal captivating performance, some fun and heart touching moments, and the well-devised action blocks stand out as the film’s assets. However, the dragged second half with repetitive sequences, and a predictable screenplay without thrilling moments make this film just an okay watch. My view on this movie Time Pass only for Sivakarthikeyan and Vidyut Jammwal fans.
