Darlings Review: Entertaining black comedy drama with excellent performances and some hard-hitting moments
Darlings Movie Rating: 3 Stars

Just watched Darlings movie on Netflix. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Alia Bhatt, Vijay Varma, Shefali Shah & Roshan Mathew
Director: Jasmeet K. Reen
Release Date: 5th August 2022 on Netflix

Story: It revolves around Badrunissa aka Badru (Alia Bhatt) is married to Hamza Shaikh (Vijay Varma) who is a senior TC with the railways. He is an alcoholic and a wife beater. Badru’s mother Shamshunissa Ansari aka Shamshu (Shefali Shah) is sick of seeing her daughter being ill-treated by the husband and keeps pressurizing her to leave him and return to her. Both stay in the same building in row houses in a lower middle-class locality.

Badru is easily manipulated by Hamza and, therefore, can’t dream of deserting him. So much so that when a well-wisher Zulfi (Roshan Mathew) complains to the police about Hamza’s ill-treatment but Badru takes back the complaint. However, Hamza continues his ill-treatment of her. Her eyes open after experiencing a tragedy. She decides to teach him a lesson, giving him a taste of his own medicine. What happens next is all about this movie.

Positives
1. Excellent Performances
2. Story
3. Direction
4. Screenplay

Negatives
1. Length
2. Climax
3. Music

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on premiere day because it looks amazing with excellent star cast.

Badru’s unconditional love for her husband Hamza makes her overlook all the red flags in their relationship. Her mother’s constant warnings go unnoticed as well. Coming from a modest background, the young wife continues to hope for a better tomorrow until things get a bit too far.

Darlings story is wonderful and fast-paced screenplay which keep you engrossed. The drama does get a bit depressing at places in the first half but that feeling doesn’t linger on for too long. There are so many twists and turns that gets completely involved and engrossed in the unfolding drama. The second half is simply brilliant. As for the last 20-25 minutes, it is not just entertaining but also mood-elevating. Direction of debutant is also good. Her narration keeps the audience engaged throughout.

On the flipside, a few developments are very convenient. It is also bewildering why Hamza doesn’t scream for help when he is kidnapped, especially when it’s established that what happens in their house is heard by other residents around. Lastly, the redevelopment angle and Shamshu’s cooking business track don’t somehow gel well with the principal narrative after a point. The climax could have been better but is fine and entertaining, nevertheless. The final scene is inspiring. Music is also minus point of this film.

Overall, movie is a hilarious entertainer and at the same time, it is also replete with some hard-hitting moments. It is an entertaining fare with a fast-paced script, excellent narration and some extraordinary performances. My view on this movie Recommended for its message
