Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: First win for Australia at MCG against India after 12 years. They won the 4th test by 184 runs and lead the series remains 2-1 with final test to go at Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne.

4th Test
Game Date: 26th December – 30th December 2024

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss against Team India and decided to bat first in the 4th Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne. 1 change for India and Washington Sundar is playing today in the place of Shubman Gill.

Australia scored 311/6 on Day 1 stumps. Australia walk away with the honors. Sam Konstas, on debut, set the tone for them and the rest followed suit. The youngster brought a fearless approach at the top of the order and that paid off. He took on India’s best bowler Bumrah and won that battle. Australia added their first 50+ opening stand of the series and that ensured the other batters were not exposed to the new ball. The likes of Khawaja, Labuschagne and Smith cashed in on the start provided by Konstas and notched up their respective fifties. India fought back in the final session when they picked up 3 wickets for 9 runs but another 50+ stand between Smith and Carey took Australia close to 300. Akash Deep, who had toiled away hard, picked up Carey with the second new ball but Cummins saw Australia through to stumps. The surface has been an interesting one; it seemed slow because of outside edges not carrying but it also had enough help for the pacers. We will know more once India start their innings but before that they need to pick the final 4 wickets quickly and not allow Australia to post a big first innings total. For Australia, Marnus Labuschagne scored 72 runs and Steve Smith is batting on 68*. For Team India Jasprit Bumrah picked 3 wickets.

Day 2
Australia bowled out for huge 474/7. They have managed to post a big first innings total and it is now up to their bowlers to drive home the advantage. India toiled hard in the field but will have to quickly switch their focus to batting. India was in the game on 1st day but let go after getting first 5 wickets. Today they could have wrapped the innings, but it was Cummins and Smith who takes the game way and post a big total. It will be interesting to see India’s reply. Steve Smith scored 140 runs and Marnus Labuschagne scored 72 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 164/5 in their 1st innings on Day 2 stumps. They are trailing by 310 runs with 5 wickets in hand. Rohit departed cheaply to Cummins as the ploy to move to the top of the order backfired on him. Jaiswal and Rahul were looking solid at the crease but a brute of a delivery from the Australian skipper got rid of the latter on the last ball before tea. Kohli looked in a good headspace from the word-go as he was showing good judgement in leaving balls outside off and playing late. Jaiswal struck a fifty and switched gears as the runs flowed for India. The 100-run stand between the duo brought the visitors right back into the contest but then the flow of the game changed. Jaiswal’s keenness to take on a tight single resulted him in being run out. That perhaps played on Kohli’s mind and he nicked off soon after to Boland. The nightwatchman, Akash Deep, also fell at the fag end of the day to Boland. India still trail by 310 and they still need 111 more to avoid the follow-on. The ball is in Australia’s court. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 72 runs and Virat Kohli scored 36 runs. For Australia Cummins & Bolland picked 2 wickets each.

Day 3
Team India scored 358/9 in their 1st innings on Day 3 stumps. Due to rain and bad light 90 overs quota was not completed. It has been a brilliant fightback from India after being on the mat at 191/6. Pant gifted his wicket away early in the day and Jadeja couldn’t do anything substantial either. Nitish Reddy walked into bat at a tricky situation. He showed great composure and played the ball on its merit. Washington Sundar provided him great support from the other end and the duo kept the fight on for India. The Aussie bowlers bowled in consistent lines and lengths, but the duo was equally adept at dealing with them. They showed respect when it was required. Nitish Reddy played some classy strokes when the opportunity presented itself and showcased his caliber. He brought up his maiden Test fifty and kept going strong. Australia tried different tactics as they kept changing the field, changed angles with the ball and tried the short ball ploy but both of them had answers to that. Lyon finally broke through once Sundar struck a fifty and the 127-run stand came to an end. Bumrah fell for a duck as Nitish Reddy was watching from the other end with the last wicket remaining. Siraj managed to survive and then Reddy reached his maiden Test ton with a boundary. Rain interrupted proceedings soon after that for the second time in the day and this time, it didn’t relent. India have brought down the deficit close to 100 which is a moral victory in itself. The pitch has actually got better as the game has progressed. The last wicket pair of India will try to add as many runs as possible tomorrow morning. The weather forecast looks better for tomorrow. All three results are still possible. Everything to play for with the series on the line. Nitish Reddy scored 105* runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 72 runs. For Australia Cummins & Bolland picked 3 wickets each.

Day 4
Team India bowled out for 369 runs in their 1st innings. Australia have taken only 21 balls this morning to take the final wicket. That brings an end to Nitish Reddy’s tremendous knock. The hosts will be pleased to have taken a 105-run lead. The 127-run stand for the 7th wicket between Nitish Reddy and Washington Sundar has kept India in the game otherwise it could have been much worse for them. The visitors have fought back brilliantly but they have a big job with the ball in hand. Nitish Reddy scored 114 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 72 runs. For Australia, Pat Cummins, Bolland & Lyon picked 3 wickets.

Australia scored 228/9 on Day 4 stumps. They have now led of 333 runs with 1 wicket in hand. Who will be the happier side? Is it Australia who recovered from 91/6 to go past 200? Or is it India who are still in this contest even after conceding a 105-run lead? The day started with India adding 10 runs to their overnight total before being bowled out. Bumrah then had his revenge when he cleaned up Konstas with an absolute jaffa. Siraj stepped up today and bowled a superb spell either side of lunch where he accounted for Khawaja and Smith. Bumrah then returned and broke Australia’s backbone with figures of 3-1-4-3. At that stage it seemed India had the upper hand but a couple of dropped catches by Jaiswal allowed Labuschagne and Cummins to stitch a partnership. Siraj once again provided the important breakthrough as he trapped Labuschagne LBW after he had notched up his second 70 in the game. Starc soon followed and even then, it looked India were slightly ahead as the lead was just 261. But the last two wickets have added 72 runs and stretched the lead to 333. India tried everything to break the final wicket partnership, but they couldn’t get past Lyon and Boland’s resistance. Bumrah had Lyon caught at slip in the final over of the day, but he had overstepped. Will Australia continue batting tomorrow? Or will they leave India a target of 334 in 96 overs?

Day 5
Australia bowled out for 234 runs and set the target of 340 for Team India. India have taken 10 balls to finish the job or more specifically Bumrah has taken 4 balls to pick the final wicket. We now have an equation – 340 runs | 92 overs | 10 wickets. It was a surprise that Australia kept batting last evening let alone today morning, but their innings has finally come to an end and now they can have a crack at the Indian batting line-up. it will be interesting to see the approach of India’s batters. Will they go for the target? Or will they be satisfied batting out the overs? Marnus Labuschagne scored 70 runs and Nathan Lyon & Pat Cummins scored 41 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 5 wickets.

Team India bowled out for just 155 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the game by 184 runs. They are now behind in this series by 1-2 despite winning the 1st test of this series. Australia needed a push in the final session, and they got it to script an emphatic win eventually to go 2-1 up in the series. India were 112/3 at Tea with Pant and Jaiswal going strong and would have believed in themselves to save this Test match. Australia, on the other hand, knew that a wicket can open things up and that’s what exactly happened. Pant once again fell trying to play a big shot and that opened the floodgates. The rest of the batters kept falling like a pack of cards with an Aussie attack on the prowl. India lost their last seven wickets for 34 runs and that tells you the story – if you give a sniff to the Aussies, they are likely to capitalize and they surely did. Boland and Lyon were in their elements and closed the game out clinically. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 84 runs and Rishabh Pant scored 30 runs. For Australia, Pat Cummins & Scott Bolland picked 3 wickets each.
