5th Test
Game Date: 3rd January – 7th January 2025

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India stand in captain Jasprit Bumrah won the toss against Australia and decided to bat first in the 5th and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney. 2 changes for India and Shubman Gill & Prasidh Krishna is playing today in the place of Rohit Sharma and Akashdeep

Team India bowled out for just 185 runs in their 1st innings. They will have 15 minutes with the new ball. It is a little gloomy. There is the grass covering and the new hard ball will talk for sure. India have under performed with the bat and that’s no secret. But batting isn’t easy. If Indian bowlers bowl in good channels, Aussies will also find it hard as well. Boland again proved to be India’s nemesis. He removed Jaiswal in his first over. Then kept probing away to induce Kohli’s edge. India then had a partnership in the form of Pant and Jadeja but Boland once again came in and picked up Pant. The very next ball he got rid of Nitish Reddy for a duck and India were left reeling. Starc also picked up three and got the timely wicket of Jadeja with a full ball which orchestrated the quick end. All is not lost for India who were in a similar situation at Perth. Bumrah once again will have to lead from the front. Rishabh Pant scored 40 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 26 runs. For Australia Scott Boland picked 4 wickets.

Australia scored 9/1 on Day 1 stumps. They are trailing by 176 runs with 9 wickets in hand. 11 wickets fell and 194 runs were scored. The grassy deck at SCG clearly aided the bowlers. Konstas looked like a cat on a hot tin roof. But he riled up Bumrah with two balls to go and Khawaja had to pay the price as he was snared up in the cordon with Rahul taking the catch at second slip. The day though belonged to Australia. They lost the toss but kept picking up wickets to win the day. India despite having batting woes decided to bat first. That was a brave move, but the batting wasn’t as good as it should have been in tough conditions.

Day 2
Australia bowled out for 181 runs in their 1st innings. India may have a lead of 4, but the bigger concern will be about Bumrah’s fitness. The Indian skipper left the field after bowling one over at the start of the session and never returned since. He has, in fact, gone to hospital for scans. And despite the absence of Bumrah, India have done terrifically well to gain a scanty lead. Prasidh Krishna deserves a lot of credit for breaking two crucial partnerships. First Smith, and then Carey. He also removed the only half-centurion of this game so far, Webster. Nitish too added a couple to his tally and played a key role in closing the innings out alongside siraj and Prasidh. Still a lot of life left on the pitch and in this Test match as well. Which way will the pendulum swing. Beau Webster scored 57 runs and Steve Smith scored 33 runs. For Team India, Prasidh Krishna & Siraj picked 3 wickets each.

Team India scored 141/6 in their 2nd innings. They have now led of 145 runs with 4 wickets in hand. The game has moved at the pace of knots. 11 wickets fell on day 1. And 15 fell on day 2. The game never had a dull moment as the bowlers were in the thick of the action all the time. Indian bowlers despite Bumrah bowling only 10 overs put up a spirited show. Krishna and Reddy who initially struggled with their lines and lengths pulled up their socks and helped India skittle out the hosts for 181. India managed a slender lead of 4. The Aussies had their debutant Webster top-scoring for them with a fifty. The hosts though after the first innings bargain were behind in the game. But India was sweating as Bumrah’s fitness was a concern with him having gone for a scan after lunch. But Indian openers started off freely. But Boland came in and struck thrice. From 42 for 1 to 78 for 4, India had lost their footing with Boland breathing fire and looking unplayable. But then Pant took charge and scored a brisk 61 off 33 balls. India ended the day with a lead of 145. If the deck continues to play like this, India will have the advantage. But they would want to add a few runs early on day 3. Another massive question would be how much Bumrah will be able to contribute to this game? That would dictate a lot of things. Rishabh Pant scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 22 runs. For Australia Scott Boland picked 4 wickets.

16 runs scored by Yashasvi Jaiswal is the most runs by an Indian batter in the first over of an innings in Tests

Yashasvi Jaiswal ends the series with 391 runs at 43.44 is the fourth most by an Indian opening batter in his debut series in Australia behind Sunil Gavaskar (450 runs in 1977/78), Virender Sehwag (464 runs in 2003/04) and Murali Vijay (482 runs in 2014/15).

This series: 108 balls | 51 runs | Four dismissals

– This is the first time in his nine-Test career Washington Sundar has faced under 100 balls in a Test where he got dismissed twice.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 157 runs in their 2nd innings. They have set a target of 162. Ideally, they would have wanted 30-40 more. But runs come at a premium on this deck. None of the Indian batters looked like scoring a lot of barring Pant. The ball moved a lot. Boland and Cummins got the ball to seam and swing. There was enough on the deck and India capitulated for 157. It was only because Pant played that freak knock. Else, the hosts would have been chasing a far lesser total. India’s approach could have been a little different on day 3 as survival on this wicket for too long was always going to be difficult. Both Jadeja and Sundar opted to trust their defense, but none could eke out a lot of runs. Both got out defending. Australia have been the better team after Perth. And they would want it to stay the same by chasing this down. It won’t be easy. But Aussies would look to dominate having taken a leaf out of Pant’s knock. Rishabh Pant scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 22 runs. For Australia Scott Boland picked 6 wickets.

Australia scored 162/4 and won the test by 6 wickets and series by 3-1. They have also regained the Border-Gavaskar trophy after 10 years. Both teams are out in the centre to congratulate each other. Good to see Bumrah in the mix. The bigger concern heading into today’s play for India was about Bumrah’s injury. Irrespective of the runs, they needed the skipper with the ball but unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Australia wasted very little time to close the Indian innings and despite removing three wickets inside lunch, the visitors were always made to look behind the game due to the absence of their premier fast bowler. Travis Head and Beau Webster played with great control and didn’t really look to slog towards the end. That’s a crystal-clear sign that the Aussies were here to prove a point and not throw it away in the name of ‘intent’. Who expected SCG to produce the spiciest wicket of the series? And for a Test match to get over in 2 and half days in Sydney? You have seen it all this series, haven’t you? Usman Khawaja scored 41 runs and Beau Webster scored unbeaten 39* runs. For Team India, Prasidh Krishna picked 3 wickets.
