Sri Lanka scored 170/6 runs in 20 overs after batting first. That’s a tremendous recovery from Sri Lanka who have done extremely well to post a total in excess of 160. They were 58/5 at one point, but Hasaranga and Rajapaksa had a match saving partnership between them. If the first five wickets added 58 runs, it was the sixth wicket stand of 58 runs that brought Sri Lanka back in the game. And once that partnership was broken, Rajapaksa and Karunaratne gave Sri Lanka the finishing touch by adding 54 runs off only 31 balls. For Pakistan, Haris Rauf was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets to his name. And had Pakistan latched on to their catches, Rauf might have ended with a few more wickets. Rapapaksa was dropped twice towards the end, and Pakistan would be praying that those dropped chances won’t come back to haunt them later tonight. Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 71* runs of 45 balls and Wanindu Hasaranga scored 36 runs of 21 balls. For Afghanistan, Fareed Ahmad picks both fallen wickets in his 4 overs quota.

Pakistan unable to chase the target and bowled out for 147 runs in their 20 overs and lost the final by 23 runs. To imagine this team were thrashed in their first game by Afghanistan. And to imagine this team will have to qualify for the next T20 World Cup. Sri Lanka cricket were on a slide: starting with the retirement of some big names in 2015, to the constant chopping and changing, to the musical chairs with the captaincy, to getting wiped out even at home. That’s it. The slide has officially been arrested. The charge has begun. And it’s been done in some style. Oh this means the world to a team that most pundits would have had as their weakest of the five competing nations in this Asia Cup. Much like their campaign, they started off horribly tonight as well, getting reduced to 58/5 with the bat, before leaking nine runs in extras without the first legal delivery of the innings being bowled. But Babar Azam continued his poor run, as did Fakhar Zaman, and the recovery that Rizwan and Iftikhar put up was a little too slow, and a little too long. And when they fell, the cookie crumbled, and Sri Lanka had their tryst with history. Mohammad Rizwan scored 55 of 49 balls and Iftikhar Ahmed scored 32 runs of 21 balls. For Sri Lanka, Pramod Madushan pick 4 wickets for 34 runs in his 4 overs quota.
