Series Result: Draw 2-2
Man Of the Match: Chris Woakes
Man Of the Series: Chris Woakes & Mitchell Starc

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss in the 5th and final Ashes test against England and decided to bowl first at the London.

England scored 283 runs in the 1st innings. After a good start from openers Australian bowlers make their comeback and gets 4 quick wickets. It was Harry Brook and Moeen Ali partnerships and lower order whom contribution helps a respectable total for England. Mitchell Starc was the leading wicket taker for Australia. The conditions are overcast and even the floodlights are turned. Perfect bowling conditions for Anderson and Broad. There are still plenty of overs left in the day and England would like to make early inroads into this Australian batting line-up. Harry Brook scored 85 runs and Ben Duckett scored 41 runs. Mitchell Starc picked 4 wickets for Australia.

Australia scored 61/1 on Day 1 stumps. They are still trailing by 222 runs with 9 wickets in hand. Australia takes the honors on day one. The first two sessions were shared by the two teams but the third one belonged to the visitors. England had their moments in the day; the opening partnership between Duckett and Crawley, the 100+ stand for the fourth wicket between Brook and Moeen, but they had their collapses as well. They lost 3 for 11 in the first session and 4 for 28 in the second, hence they were not able to capitalize on the chances that Australia gave them. The openers then got them off to a solid start but once again Warner could not convert his start, Khawaja and Labuschagne though saw them off till stumps. As has been the norm in this series, the Test has moved at a rapid pace and we can expect the same tomorrow.

ENG: 283
AUS: 61/1 on Day 1 stumps

Day 2
Australia bowled out for huge 295 runs on Day 2 stumps and they have only 12 runs. Another gun day for us in this Ashes. Australia all-out with a lead of 12. They will take it and they will also not take it. Will not take it because they collapsed losing 6 wickets for 94 runs after a great base. Will take it because the last 3 wickets added 110 runs. England will feel very happy about restricting Australia because the pitch is very good for batting. Australia definitely throwing away a great opportunity to get a good lead. Steve Smith was at the centre of it all again holding one end tight when wickets were frustratingly falling all around him and then a controversial runout which he escaped because the third ump did not have an extra camera angle to make an even more conclusive decision. At that point Australia were 89 adrift, but Smith opened up later scoring against the new ball and the tail wagged. Pretty sure Australia will know what’s the right length to be bowling here. Steve Smith scored 71 runs and Usman Khawaja scored 47 runs. For England, Chris Woakes picks 3 wickets.

ENG: 283
AUS: 295 on Day 2 stumps

Day 3
England scored 389/9 on Day 3 stumps and now they lead by 377 and it is all smiles in their camp. Anderson and Broad walk off to a standing ovation. A day they dominated right through up until the final hour or so where they lost 5 wickets for 47 runs. Crawley and Duckett got them off to a flying start and there was no looking back. Apart from Brook, all of the top 7 batters got starts, Root even reached the 90s but fell nine short of his hundred, but it was his partnership with Bairstow that has put England in this commanding position. The pair added 110 runs for the fifth wicket and squashed any thoughts Australia had of restricting them to under 350. Starc and Murphy were the two most expensive bowlers for Australia but also picked up 7 wickets between them. England are still not bowled out and this veteran duo will look to get them close to 400. All eyes will be on how Australia’s batters approach this chase tomorrow because England have shown there are no demons in the pitch. Should be another exciting day of Ashes cricket. Joe Root scored 91 runs and Zak Crawley scored 71 runs. For Australia, Starc & Murphy picked 4 wickets.

ENG: 283 and 389/9 on Day 3 stumps
AUS: 295

Day 4
England bowled for 395 runs. Australia needed 11 balls to take the final wicket. Broad’s six were the only runs added to the overnight score. The veteran pair walked out to a sumptuous reception at the Oval and the plan was clear from them, Broad would face Starc while Anderson would take on Murphy. They denied a few singles and stuck to that plan till Murphy got one to beat Anderson’s reverse sweep. The target for Australia is 384. It seems a long way away but there is plenty of time left in the game and the pitch is still good for batting. Joe Root scored 91 runs and Zak Crawley scored 71 runs. For Australia, Starc & Murphy picked 4 wickets.

Australia has a solid start and scored 138/0 before rain interrupts the game and game has been called off for the day. There was rain expected during the afternoon session but not at this magnitude which would cost us more than half a day’s play. Australia would be the happier side right now. They picked up the last England wicket for just 6 runs today morning and their openers have done a fabulous job in the 384 chases. Warner survived Broad’s new ball burst while Khawaja remained solid at the other end. The pair showed better intent in this innings and scored at a healthy rate. England also missed a trick as Wood wasn’t introduced until the 33rd over. Root and Moeen bowled 14 of the 38 overs and they didn’t trouble the openers much. This Test is set up nicely 249 runs, 10 wickets, 98 overs. England to level the series. Australia to win their first away Ashes since 2001. Hopefully the weather stays clear, and we get a grand finish to this amazing series.

ENG: 283 and 395
AUS: 295 and 135/0 on Day 4 stumps

Day 5
Australia bowled out for 334 runs in their 2nd innings and lost the 5th and final test by 49 runs. Stuart Broad fittingly finishes it off for England. 604 Test wickets and he pulls the curtains down in style. They say leave on a high. The Oval is up on its feet. They are all applauding. The family is emotional in the stands. What a theatre the home fans have put on for their stalwart. Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad lead England off the field. He turns to all corners and thanks everyone for the love and support. Australia come down to congratulate England. This series ends 2-2, but Australia retains the Ashes. You would have to say England have been the better side. A side that had clarity, a side that had clear intent and the never say die attitude. They stunned the Aussies in the first Test with a comeback, only to lose it at the end. They came so close at Lord’s again. They were determined to win the series from 0-2 down and conquered Headingley. Rain played spoilsport in Manchester and at The Oval despite losing the toss, they negated Australia’s advantage and levelled the series and, in the process, won a lot of hearts. Usman Khawaja scored 72 runs and David Warner scored 60 runs. For England, Chris Woakes picks 4 wickets.
