Team India scored 264/4 on Day 1 stumps. Yet another see-saw battle is unfolding in this series with the balance of play shifting between both sides on Day 1 in Manchester. India would’ve been delighted with the opening session as England went wicketless after opting to bowl on a pitch with decent pace and bounce and some movement too. But they fought back after lunch. After a 94-run stand between Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul, they were reduced to 140/3 with Ben Stokes leading the way again. Sai Sudharsan notched up his first Test fifty, looking very composed in the middle after being dropped early in his innings. But just when his partnership with Rishabh Pant seemed to be taking India to a solid position, Pant took a nasty blow to his foot and had to be driven off the field. India could well be five down effectively, given how bad the swelling on Pant’s foot appeared. He was hobbling on one leg, writhing in agony and couldn’t even stand. Going to be a challenge for the lower order tomorrow morning with the second new ball due straightaway. Sai Sudharsan scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs. For England, skipper Ben Stokes picked 2 wickets.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 358 runs in their 1st innings. A much better show from the England seamers today, hitting the good length more often, and getting the second new ball to talk. Stokes led the way with his first five-for in eight years. His rhythm has been superb this whole series and he was the pick of the bowlers once again. The highlight for India was Rishabh Pant limping out to bat with a broken foot and adding a few runs. All said and done, 358 might well be a very decent total on the board with the pitch offering a fair amount for the bowlers. There’s lateral movement and some inconsistent bounce too. Let’s see how the Indian bowlers make use of it. Sai Sudharsan scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs. For England, skipper Ben Stokes picked 5 wickets.

England scored 225/2 in their 1st innings on day 2 stumps. They are trailing by 133 runs with 8 wickets in hand. Captain Ben Stokes’s first five-for in eight years and a rollicking 166-run opening stand between Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley, aided by the conditions, have put England in the box seat in Manchester. On a gloomy morning, the England pacers hit better lengths than yesterday, found movement with the second new ball and bowled India out for 358 even as Rishabh Pant heroically walked out to bat with a broken foot. The total seemed to be a decent one at that point. However, it didn’t take long for that perception to change. India’s seamers seemed to find lesser help than their counterparts and were also poor with the new ball, often straying in line and offering loose balls. And Duckett and Crawley jumped all over them. After the slow-going at Lord’s, the duo enjoyed the pace and bounce in the surface which enabled their free-flowing selves. They put the bowling to the sword, going at more than five an over and giving Shubman Gill plenty of headaches.

Day 3
England scored 544/7 in their 1st innings on Day 3 stumps. They have led of huge 186 runs with 3 wickets in hand. A day of great despair for India. Last time they conceded a total of 500-plus was in 2021. The players drag themselves off the field having seen England bat them out of the Test and the series probably. It was always going to be a massive challenge to pull things back with the old ball after the erroneous performance from the bowlers yesterday. They were much better in the first session, holding their line well and not giving away too many easy runs. But the ball was old and the pitch less helpful. The luck didn’t go their way either and it didn’t take long for things to slip away. You can question the decision of not using Washington Sundar until the 69th over as well. He was arguably the best bowler of the day, even offering a glimmer of hope just after lunch with a couple of wickets in quick succession. But Joe Root, who became the second-highest run-scorer in Tests enroute his 150, pulled the door shut. Kamboj was made to look ordinary. Thakur was hardly seen. And Siraj bustled in for over after over without much luck, as has been the case with him all series. Luck is what India will need in truckloads if they are to salvage anything from the game.

Day 4
England bowled out for huge 669 runs in their 1st innings. No doubts they are in a great position to push India harder. They will also get a mini-14-min burst at the Indian openers before lunch. India had a forgettable effort with the ball. England started brightly with Duckett and Crawley. The former will be kicking himself for missing out on a certain hundred. Root broke records for fun yesterday and Stokes returned fully fit today to pile on the agony for the Indians. 125 runs were smashed in 133 balls today. India have asked for the heavy roller. This pitch has enough tricks for the batters to be worried. One’s up, one’s down, Dawson has rough for the five LHBs, there’s Archer, there Stokes again. This won’t be easy. But like Duckett, Root and Stokes did batters can find a method to still score. Joe Root scored 150 runs and skipper Ben Stokes scored 141 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 174/2 on Day 4 stumps. Rahul and Gill Walk off to applause, having defied the English bowlers for more than 62 overs with an unbeaten partnership of 174. The goal of saving the Test is still a long way away, but at least they have given Indian fans a reason to believe in the improbable. The duo joined hands before lunch when the score was 0/2. Now they walk off after forcing England to play the waiting game, seen by how the hosts had to use a lot of overs of Dawson and even Root towards the fag end of the day. With Ben Stokes not bowling so far, the England attack hasn’t carried the same edge, and they’ve struggled to create many chances with the old ball despite trying different things, including a burst with the short ball. The pitch isn’t misbehaving too much when the ball is older and softer. The big challenge will be when the second new ball becomes available at some point tomorrow in the first session. Long way to go still and England are still favorites. But the way this series has gone, you can expect some drama.

Day 5
Team India scored 425/4 and secured a draw. Heartbreak at Headingley, heartbreak at Lord’s, and yet a performance with so much heart in Manchester. It’s a monumental effort that could come to define this team going forward under Shubman Gill. Backed into a corner, buried under a mountain of runs, and asked to bat five sessions to save the game, India have done it. And they’ve done it without any drama on a final day that promised to test them to the limit. England will wonder what went wrong and why the bowling lacked any bite when Stokes didn’t have the ball. The pitch wasn’t entirely flat. There was some uneven bounce right through, and some footmarks to work with too. But some missed chances, some ordinary bowling and a huge amount of skill with the bat has kept India alive in the series going into the final Test. They can’t win it, but they can certainly draw it. And need there be anything said about the merit of a draw after a day like today. It was England who had enough of it by the end, wanting to call it off but only to be kept on the field till the left-handed duo completed their milestones. Ravindra Jadeja scored unbeaten 107* runs and skipper Shubman Gill scored 103 runs. For England, Chris Woakes picked 2 wickets.
