Team India scored huge 359/3 on Day 1 stumps. A genie has granted all of India’s wishes or so it would seem because after what’s transpired on Day 1 of this Test. The openers, rock-solid after being asked to bat first. The surface, docile after an initial threat. A commanding century from Jaiswal and perhaps most importantly, a composed hundred from Shubman Gill on captaincy debut. They could hardly have wished for more. The question marks lurking around have gone poof! No longer there. India’s merry was England’s misery. Stokes will be left wondering if he made the right decision to bowl first after winning the toss. Even if he did make the right call, his bowlers didn’t back him up. Miffed by the Indian batters’ defiance, their over-zealousness translated into indiscipline and the Indian batters cashed in. Stokes himself bowled his heart out, picking up the wickets of Sudharsan and Jaiswal. Carse picked up Rahul in the first session while the wickets column remained barren for the rest. Skipper Shubman Gill is batting on 127* and Yashashvi Jaiswal scored 101 runs.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for huge 471 runs in their 1st innings. It did not start off like that as Gill and Pant continued their domination from yesterday. A wicketless opening hour and that saw Pant reach his seventh Test ton with a six. Things looked very bleak for England but they came storming back after the Gill wicket. India lost 7 for 41 since Gill’s wicket. Josh Tongue was impressive as he got the ball to move and finished with a four-fer while the skipper struck crucial blows to take a four-fer too. India would be disappointed at not kicking on from 430/3, but it’s perfect bowling conditions at the moment and they will expect Bumrah to make merry. Currently the Indians are doing their warm-ups as they wait for the drizzle to stop. Skipper Shubman Gill scored 147 runs and Rishabh Pant scored 134 runs. For England, Skipper Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue picked 4 wickets each.

England scored 209/3 in their 1st innings on day 2 stumps. They are trailing by 262 runs with 7 wickets in hand. There was a little rain-delay before England resumed their innings and when they did, they were up against a sizzling Jasprit Bumrah. Extracting loads of swing and seam movement with the new ball and aided by the overhead conditions, Bumrah conjured up an unplayable delivery to send Crawley back early. While Bumrah continued to create chances, India, unfortunately, didn’t hold on to them. Duckett was dropped twice early on and he’d already made 62 before Bumrah castled him during the latter’s second spell. A nervous starter, Pope didn’t invoke assurance early on but settled in nicely as the ball got older and the pitch flatter. He went on to record back-to-back Test hundreds. Bumrah came back to force a false shot off Root and he also got Brook, only to be denied by the no-balls he bowled in the last over. He simply didn’t get enough support from the rest of the bowling attack

Day 3
England bowled out for 465 runs in their 1st innings. This is now effectively an ODI game after the first innings has ended almost equally. Bumrah again the star for India despite all the drops off his bowling, finishing with a fifer. Prasidh took a three-fer and Siraj the remaining two but both those two were disappointing. They leaked runs and that’s why England are just 6 behind. Brook who was caught off a no-ball on 0 went on to make 99 and made sure India paid for that error. Not to mention he was dropped twice. Useful contributions from Jamie Smith, Woakes and Carse and along with Brook have pushed England very close to India’s total. The conditions are cloudy and swinging and it will be tough for the Indian batters when they come out. Ollie Pope scored 99 runs and Harry Brook scored 99 runs. For Team India, skipper Jasprit Bumrah picked 5 wickets.

Team India scored 90/2 in their 2nd innings on Day 3 stumps. They have led of 96 runs with 8 wickets in hand. England started well by removing Jaiswal for just four. But Rahul and Sai Sudharsan joined hands and put on a good stand. The former has looked world-class, and his drives have been a treat to watch. He has not given England a chance and it was left to Stokes to break the stand which he did by getting the debutant caught at mid-wicket. There was always rain forecast for the day and it arrived exactly at 6:04pm which meant that play could not go on any further as the scheduled close of play is at 6pm. Stokes tried to bowl as many overs as possible by throwing the ball to Bashir, but the umpires, after a heavy burst, took the players in much to Stokes’ disappointment. India lead by 96 and would be looking at something in the region of 300 to give themselves a good chance of winning this one.

Day 4
Team India bowled out for 364 runs in their 2nd innings and set the target of 371 for England to win the 1st Test. Once again a collapse from India in this innings. 7/41 in the first innings. Now 6/31 in the second. Before that though it was two fine hundreds from KL and Pant which has set England a target of 371. Two contrasting ones too – from KL and Pant. One a masterclass in respecting the good balls and punishing the bad ones. While the other, subdued for large parts and then aggressive, belligerent and attacking in the others. Together they added 195 after the early loss of Gill today and deflated England. But Pant’s wicket opened the door and when KL was dismissed, England used that to great effect to trigger a collapse. A brand new hard-ball aided them a lot, but Tongue was once again outstanding as he took a three-fer. He was supported by the others. KL Rahul scored 137 runs and Rishabh Pant scored 118 runs. For England, Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue picked 3 wickets each.

England scored 21/0 on Day 4 stumps. They need 350 runs to win on the last day with 10 wickets in hand. All four results possible as well. And factor in the rain which is forecast for tomorrow. What at one stage looked like a massive target for England was reduced to 371 and by stumps they have knocked off 21 of those without any alarms. Once again it will be up to Bumrah to lead India to a famous away win the others supporting acts. Mind you there’s turn and grip from the foot holes for the spinners and Jadeja is a threat too

Day 5
England scored 373/5 and won the 1st test by 5 wickets. One of the best wins under the McCullum-Stokes era. And they have gone 1-0 up in this five-Test series. England just kept themselves in the game and then snatched it away from India on the final day. For the first four days, India had chances to seal the game and put it beyond England’s reach but they kept squandering those. They have been made to pay for it big-time. On an overcast morning, Stokes won a good toss and opted to bowl under what seemed friendly conditions to bowl. But India through Jaiswal, KL, Gill and Pant went on to make 471. There were three hundreds in the innings and at one stage, they were sitting pretty at 430/3, the last 7 wickets fell for just 41 – 1) First chance India gave England of getting back. England in reply were helped by Duckett’s 62, hundred from Pope and a 99 from Brook. India had England at 276/5 but the last 5 wickets managed to score 189 runs – 2) Second time India allowed England to get away. The lead was just 6 and it reduced the game to a one-innings shootout. India rode on KL’s and Pant’s contrasting tons to make 364 in the 2nd dig. They were well-placed to bat England out of the game at 287/3 and then at 333/4 but again a collapse allowed England to make hay with the 2nd new-ball and take the last 6 wickets for just 31 runs – 3) Another chance allowed by India to let England come back. Chasing 371 in the last innings was still not going to be easy but a tremendous 149 from Duckett with help from the others saw England chase it down quite easily. The last day was totally one-sided apart from a few phases as England romped home. Ben Duckett scored 149 runs and Zak Crawley scored 65 runs. For Team India, Prasidh Krishna & Shardul Thakur picked 2 wickets each.
