Game Date: 31st July – 4th August 2025
Game Result: Team India won by 6 runs
Series Result: Match Drawn
Man Of the Match: Mohammed Siraj
Man Of the Series: Shubman Gill & Harry Brook

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
England stand-in captain Ollie Pope won the toss again in the 5th and final Test against Team India and decided to bowl first at Kennington Oval, London. Four changes for Team India and Akash Deep, Karun Nair, Prasidh Krishna and Dhruv Jurel is playing today in the place of Anshul Kamboj, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah and injured Rishabh Pant.

Team India scored 204/6 on Day 1 stumps. With Karun Nair showing the way with an unbeaten 52. Jaiswal was out early, and then Rahul chopped one back onto his stumps. Gill was needlessly run out, and Sai Sudharsan and Ravindra Jadeja got starts but couldn’t consolidate. Karun Nair was watchful throughout his innings, and he found some support with Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar, as England won’t be fully satisfied with their bowling effort. They had the better of conditions on this rain marred first day but didn’t bowl with enough consistency and bowled too many wide deliveries. Josh Tongue produced two jaffas to get right of the two left-handers, and Woakes and Atkinson chipped in with wickets as well. England will most likely be without Woakes for tomorrow and maybe the rest of this Test, as he hurt his left shoulder while diving to protect a boundary. That’s all from this exciting and attritional day of cricket. Sai Sudharsan scored 61 runs and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 58 runs. For England, skipper Ben Stokes picked 2 wickets.

IND: 204/6 on Day 1 stumps

Stats
India have two wins (1971 and 2021) from 15 Tests at The Oval. They beat England here in 2021 but lost their last game here, the WTC Final against Australia in 2023

Shubman Gill needs 89 runs to beat Sir Don Bradman’s record of 810 runs in Ashes 1936/37 is the most for anyone in a debut series as captain

Joe Root has two hundreds at The Oval, both against India 149* in 2014 and 125 in 2018.

– This is the 14th instance of a team losing all five tosses in a 5-Test series, the only previous one in the 21st century coming during India’s tour of England in 2018. Three of the previous 13 series ended in a stalemate while the team losing all tosses only ended up winning once previously England in home Ashes series in 1953.

Shubman Gill has lost all five tosses in this Test series, and this is the 15th consecutive toss loss for the Indian men’s team in international cricket. This is also the first time in five Tests that Ollie Pope won the toss as Captain.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 224 runs in their 1st innings. Just 34 balls needed for England to skittle out the final four Indian wickets, as they have bundled out the visitors for 224 runs. Karun Nair battled hard for his fifty last evening in tricky conditions and got some help from Sai Sudharsan and Washington Sundar but today’s morning belonged to England. India lost Jaiswal early, and Gill was needlessly run out while Josh Tongue produced a couple of jaffas to dismiss Jadeja and Sudharsan. Gus Atkinson bowled with gusto throughout on his return Test and has a fifer to show for it. India’s tail couldn’t survive long in testing conditions where the ball was moving around quite a bit, despite it being a nice and sunny morning. Let’s see how England respond. Karun Nair scored 57 runs and Sai Sudharsan scored 38 runs. For England, Gus Atkinson picked 5 wickets.

England bowled out for 247 runs in their 1st innings. They have led of 23 runs. At 92/0 things looked abysmal for India. Duckett and Crawley were running the visitors ragged. Words were exchanged, counterattack followed, India looked flat. But Akash Deep broke the opening stand by getting Duckett and gave him a sendoff. And the Indian bowlers sprung to life. The effect of the heavy roller wearing off, the true nature of the dukes ball, bowlers finding the right lengths and getting help off the pitch. everything combined so well. During a phase India got 4 wickets for just 20 runs as Siraj came out firing. Nip-backers, yorkers and he bowled a great 8-over spell. Prasidh proved his mettle and got returns that he deserved. He got bounce, movement and England couldn’t handle Brook got a crucial fifty to get England into the lead. This game is brilliant balanced again. And the series trend of both teams bouncing back in style continues. The pitch still has plenty of help for the pacers. India use the heavy roller this time to negate some of that help in the first few overs but the bowlers will find their zones again. Big final innings for India coming up. Zak Crawley scored 64 runs and Harry Brook scored 53 runs. For Team India, Siraj & Prasidh Krishna picked 4 wickets each.

Team India scored 75/2 in their 2nd innings on day 2 stumps. They have led of 52 runs with 8 wickets in hand. Another gripping day of Test cricket. 15 wickets fell in total today so there was no shortage of action. India was rattled out early in the first session today, they managed to add just 20 runs for their last four wickets. These English openers then unleashed Bazball in all its glory as they shared a 92-run stand that came off just 77 balls. It almost felt like they were batting on a different surface before Akash Deep struck to give India their first breakthrough. While Crawley carried on scoring 64, India came back with an inspired bowling performance after Lunch. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj both ended with four-fers as India bowled England out for 247 with the only other sizeable contribution being Brook’s 53. In the final session, England created chances but didn’t hold on to them. In all, three catches were dropped including that of Jaiswal who remains unbeaten on 51. They did, however, manage to pick up the wickets of KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan before bad light forced them off about 15 minutes earlier than expected.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 396 runs in their 2nd innings and set the target of 374 for England to win this test and series. True to traditions, the third innings provides a big score at The Oval. The Indian openers were streaky last evening, tormented by the nip backers and outswingers of Josh Tongue. KL Rahul succumbed and Sai Sudharsan was out fairly early as well heading into the close of play. India got an unexpected bonus today as Akash Deep secured his first fifty after Crawley dropped him early in the day. Shubman Gill fell to the nip backer; Karun Nair was surprised by extra bounce and Dhruv Jurel was trapped by the outswinger as England found a few moments of joy. Yashasvi Jaiswal was India’s star batter though, as he came into his own after a sketchy start to notch up his 6th Test hundred and his 4th against England. Ravindra Jadeja picked up another fifty, and then Washington Sundar provided some fireworks in a bloating last wicket partnership, ending with 53 as India set a target of 374. Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson gave their heart out for the nation with their long, lung busting spells, but the English seamers were truly knackered by the end, severely missing that fourth pacer (an injured Chris Woakes). Tongue picked up a fifer and Atkinson ended up with three, while Overton picked up a couple of wickets as well. This will have to be a record chase at The Oval if England are to win this series. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 118 runs and Akash Deep scored 66 runs. For England, Josh Tongue picked 5 wickets.

England scored 50/1 in their 2nd innings on Day 3 stumps. They need 324 runs with 9 wickets in hand. Like in the first innings, England’s openers got them off to a breezy start as India opted to use Prasidh Krishna with the new ball instead of Siraj. There was less lateral movement compared to the first two days with the new ball and barring a couple of deliveries from Akash Deep that bounced a bit extra, England wasn’t too troubled. They were a lot more measured in their aggression, respecting the good ball and feasting on the full ones. It looked like Crawley and Duckett had done enough to survive the day, but Mo Siraj produced a superb yorker off the penultimate ball of the final over to castle Crawley.

Day 4
England scored 339/6 on Day 4 early stumps due to bad light. They need 35 runs with 4 wickets in hand. Four days of end-to-end cricket and we are still in for a thriller. Another fifth day finish loading for this riveting Test series. Duckett came out positively and kept the mantle up this morning with a fifty but was dismissed shortly after – nicking off to the cordon. England were in a bit of uncertainty at 106/3, after Pope was trapped by the Siraj nip-backer. However, a sensational countercharge from Root and Brook turned the tide in a session and a half, as India were blown away from the game. Brook was dropped by Siraj at fine leg, and he punished them harshly with a blistering 98-ball 111. The Indian bowlers were tiring, and the ball had gotten soft, as Brook and Root ploughed away. Harry Brook scored unbeaten 111 runs and Joe Root scored 105 runs. For Team India, Prasidh Krishna picked 3 wickets.

Day 5
England bowled out for 367 runs and lost the game by just 6 runs and level the series 2-2. What a game we’ve had here at the Oval!! The Indian players all rush towards Siraj in celebration. Jurel is the first one there as he runs in and hugs him while the entire Indian contingent runs in towards the bowler. Gill takes a moment to laud Chris Woakes, his courage cannot go unmentioned. He came out there with a busted shoulder, ready to not only bat with the wrong hand but also just one hand – Woakes’ left arm hidden under a sweater and a bat in the other will be an image that’ll live long. India do a victory lap at The Oval as the fans cheer them everywhere they go. Siraj has the ball in his hand and soaks in all the applause. The three bowlers now walk through arm in arms, as they now pose for a few photographs. Gill leading the march on that victory lap and what a true leader he’s proved to be in this series. Harry Brook scored unbeaten 111 runs and Joe Root scored 105 runs. For Team India, Mohammed Siraj picked 5 wickets.
