Gabba Test ended as Draw-cricketmovie.com

Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25: Valiant effort from Team India helps to finish the 3rd Test against Australia as Draw. Series remains 1-1 with 2 more test to go at The Gabba, Brisbane.

3rd Test
Game Date: 14th December – 18th December 2024

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India captain Rohit Sharma again won the toss against Australia and decided to bowl first in the 3rd Test at The Gabba, Brisbane. 2 changes for India and Akashdeep and Ravindra Jadeja is playing today in the place of Harshit Rana and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Australia scored 28/0 in 13.2 overs in rain interrupted game. The rain has picked up in intensity and the overhead conditions look dark and it continues through the day due to which play has been called off. A good toss to lose for Australia? Both captains wanted to bowl first, but the pitch doesn’t have any demons as such. 98 overs to be bowled and we’ll hopefully get a full day of cricket tomorrow.

AUS: 28/0 in 13.2 Overs on Day 1 stumps

Stats
– The last Indian captain to opt to field first in a Test in Australia before Rohit Sharma was Sourav Ganguly at the same venue in 2003. Overall, the ninth such instance for India with four previous Tests ending in defeats and as many in draws.

– The last time a visiting side to win after opting to field first in Australia was South Africa in Hobart in 2016 while the last such instance in Brisbane came in 1985 by New Zealand.

Day 2
Australia scored huge 401/7 on day 2 stumps. A day of toil for India. The morning started well enough with Bumrah removing both openers quickly and then Nitish Reddy getting rid of Labuschagne soon after. Post lunch though, India were just hunting leather as Travis Head got going once more. He arrived at the crease when Australia were 75/3 and by the time he was finally dismissed for 152, he’d taken Australia to a position of strength at 327/6. He scored freely from the moment he came to the crease and initially, almost helped Smith along at the other end. Once the partnership started to blossom, Smith started to find his groove too and they piled on the runs. They shared a 241-run stand during which an out-of-form Smith found his mojo. It finally came to an end in the third session when Bumrah dismissed him for 101. There was a little period where India clawed their way back into the game after that as Bumrah also managed to dismiss Marsh and Head in quick succession but with little support from the other end, India allowed the game to drift once again after that. Carey and Cummins stitched up another 50-run stand and even as Cummins departed late in the day, Carey continued to look comfortable and took Australia past 400. Long and hard day for India that with Bumrah looking like the only potent weapon once more. He’s already picked up another fifer and he desperately need someone else to step up. We’ll be back for Day 3 tomorrow and hope that the rain that’s forecasted doesn’t arrive. Travis Head scored 152 runs and Steven Smith scored 101 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 5 wickets.

First time in 11 Tests across three home series Australia have managed to post 400+ total against India. Last instance: 572/7 dec at the SCG in 2015

Day 3
Australia bowled out for huge 445 runs in their 1st innings. They have a big total on the board, thanks to tons from Head and Smith followed by a 88-ball 70 from Carey. For India, Bumrah undoubtedly was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up a six-for, but the others were made to toil hard. Australia managed to add 40 runs in 16.1 overs to their overnight score, much slower than most of us anticipated. But they are in the box seat. Their three tall pacers will look to dominate proceedings. Travis Head scored 152 runs and Steven Smith scored 101 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 6 wickets.

Team India scored 51/4 on Day 3 stumps. An extremely frustrating day that. It was a bit of a masquerade every time they came out there as the rain hung around Brisbane like an annoying mosquito that disappears as soon as you flick the light on but promptly returns to torment you as you turn it off. Well, in the little play that did happen, India didn’t have a good time of it again. Australia decided to resume batting in the morning and added about 40 runs to their overnight total. India’s innings started off on the wrong-foot as Jaiswal edged his first delivery for four and was caught off his second. India needed some application from Gill and Kohli, but they didn’t get it from them as both fell trying to chase wide deliveries outside off. Pant was the next to fall after nicking off to Starc to leave India in trouble 44/4. Mind you, all of this happened in between the numerous interruptions and the Indian batters simply weren’t allowed an opportunity to get settled. Now, they trail by 394 and their fortunes in this game look bleak. What looks even bleaker, however, is tomorrow’s weather forecast. There are heavy showers and storms predicted for the entire morning and afternoon so today’s annoyance might unfortunately still persist tomorrow.

Day 4
Team India scored 252/9 on Day 4 stumps. Extraordinary last-wicket stand this between Akash Deep and Bumrah to get India across that 246-run mark to avoid the follow-on. Rahul set the foundation with some resoluteness and defiance at the top, Jadeja played some beautiful counter-attacking cricket and gave India a solid chance and then these two took them over that crucial threshold. Now, I know reading all that might make it seem like India have won the game but the importance of them avoiding the follow-on, particularly from the position they were in, cannot be understated. It means that now Australia will need to come out and bat again and they’ll need to do so for at least an hour tomorrow. Thinking from Australia’s perspective, that eats into valuable time that they would’ve liked to try and bowl India out for a second time. And for India, while playing for the draw is definitely the plan, dare I say there’s a very small, very remote, very minute chance that they’ll be thinking of a win. All that is in the distance though, the game is beautifully setup for the final day and all we can do is hope that the weather holds up. The expected narrative, though, is that Australia will bat for at least an hour tomorrow and that’ll leave India with too many to get to try and win. Unless something absolutely extraordinary happens, like say, India bowling Australia out really cheaply, that is likely how this game will pan out. Anyway, that’s it from us for today, we absolutely cannot wait to get back to the action tomorrow. KL Rahul scored 84 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 77 runs. For Australia, skipper Pat Cummins picked 4 wickets.

Day 5
Team India bowled out for 260 runs in their 1st innings. The last pair added 47 runs, helped India possibly avoid defeat and frustrated the Australians to no end. As things stand, a minimum of 92 overs are left in the Test and Australia will have to do some heavy lifting if they’re to clinch a sensational victory. Will they look to bat for the rest of the session, score at a good clip and then ask India to survive two sessions of play? That looks the best bet now, but they’ll have one eye on the weather, and they wouldn’t want to tire out their 3-men bowling attack a lot. No Hazlewood for the second innings, Mitchell Marsh has bowled very little and that has left Starc and Cummins to do the heavy lifting, with Nathan Lyon holding up one end. KL Rahul scored 84 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 77 runs. For Australia, skipper Pat Cummins picked 4 wickets.

Australia declared their 2nd innings on 89/7 in 18 overs. India needs 275 to win the Brisbane Test, a minimum of 54 overs, but in all honesty, they’ll be lucky to face more than 40 overs. Australia came out of the blocks, played shots, lost wickets and have added 89 runs in 18 overs, at a shade under 5 RPO. They’ve three fit bowlers, Mitch Marsh and Travis Head can bowl as well, but a lot will depend on Starc, Cummins and Lyon if they’re to pull off something remarkable. For 4 days, India was never in the hunt to secure a win, they’ve now being given a target, it does look steep, the fickle weather will add to the chaos, will they be tempted at a chase? Or will they draw curtains and prefer a 1-1 scoreline going into the Boxing Day Test. Skipper Pat Cummins scored 22 runs and Alex Carey scored unbeaten 20*. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 3 wickets.

Team India scored 8/0 before rain interrupts again and test ended as Draw. They’ve decided to call time because it doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better. A pretty dismal finish to the game but not an unexpected one. The excitement was starting to build up and we had a couple of incredible little sessions of play today before rain had the final say. We’re only left wondering about what ifs. With India set a 275-run target and with about 40 overs realistically left before they went off, it would have made for a cracking finish had things not been curtailed today. India actually had a great morning. Australia came out with an intent to attack and it sort of backfired. Wickets tumbled quickly as India bowled with great assertion and that meant that although Australia batted and eventually declared for 89/7 after 18 overs, they wouldn’t have felt good about how things transpired. As it stands, both teams will leave The Gabba 1-1. Two more riveting Test matches to come though and the series couldn’t be set up any better.
