Ireland scored 290/5 runs in their 50 overs after batting first. It’s not a second-string South African pace attack. These are the best in the country but Ireland in their home conditions, have developed a bit of a niche. They were put in to bat on a pitch that isn’t exactly true-paced, but managed to build some partnerships partially aided by a number of dropped catches from South Africa. The innings was built around Balbirnie‘s hundred, but after he departed, South Africa leaked embarrassingly from both ends courtesy the Dockrell-Tector carnage. It seemed like South Africa had no plan B, and once the slow-and-wide plan failed, no one was spared, not even Rabada and Nortje. Skipper Andy Balbirnie scored 102 of 117 balls and Harry Tector scored 79 of 68 balls. For South Africa Phehlukwayo pick 2 wickets for 73 runs in his 10 overs quota.

South Africa unable to chased down the target and all out for 247 runs in 48.3 overs and lost the game by 43 runs. It was a tall order, particularly with some of SA’s key players benched. Bavuma and Markram departed early, but the dismissals of Malan and Rassie really did the damage. Ireland bowled well didn’t provide width, set better fields and most importantly took their catches. The bowling was the difference between the two sides and certainly the fielding. One can’t expect to win an ODI after dropping four catches. Eventually, the lower and middle order of SA fizzled out, and succumbed to the scoreboard pressure, before the tail offered some resistance that would inevitably be short-lived. Janneman Malan scored 84 of 96 balls and Rassie van der Dussen scored 49 of 70 balls. For Ireland Mark Adair, Joshua Little and Andy McBrine pick 2 wickets each.
