IDFC First Bank Test Series 2024: Team India registered their biggest test win against England in the 3rd Test. They won the game by 434 runs and lead the series 2-1 with 2 more test to go at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot.

3rd Test
Game Date: 15th February – 19th February 2024
Game Result: Team India won by 434 runs
Man Of the Match: Ravindra Jadeja

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India captain Rohit Sharma again won the toss against England and decided to bat first at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. Sarfaraz Khan & Dhruv Jurel is debuting while Mohammed Siraj & Ravindra Jadeja is also playing this game.

Team India scored 326/5 runs on day 1 stumps in their 1st innings after batting first. India’s day as they have battled back superbly from 33/3. The revival came from Rohit Sharma and Jadeja who strung together 204 for the fourth wicket. Granted the wicket flattened out and conditions were easy for batting but both batters deserve all the credit for rescuing their side. Earlier on, India were in big trouble inside the first hour as Jaiswal, Gill and Patidar all fell. India sent Jadeja at 5 and it paid off handsomely. Rohit who got starts in the first two Tests got the hundred he was threatening. But he took on the short ball and found mid-wicket to give England another opening. Debutant Sarfaraz walked in and played so well, belying the fact that he was on debut. He reached 50 off 48 balls but his over-eagerness to get Jadeja to an 100 cost him as he was run out. England have just taken the new-ball and after a nice night’s sleep they will come back hard tomorrow. The other centurion of the day – Jadeja, the hometown hero, as usual got runs at a place he knows so well. He will be key for India tomorrow as they look to get to 450-500. Captain Rohit Sharma scored 131 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 110* runs. For England, Mark Wood picked 3 wickets.

IND: 326/5 on day 1 stumps

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 445 runs in their 1st innings. Good first innings total from India. Centuries from Rohit and Jadeja and handy contributions from Sarfaraz, Jurel, Ashwin and Bumrah has taken the score to 445. The highlight of the innings was the stand between Rohit and Jadeja which was 204. The pitch has something in it when the ball is hard and new, otherwise it’s a batting beauty. England toiled hard and Mark Wood was outstanding as he ran in and gave it his all under the hot conditions. The others chipped in too. England will be looking to make a strong reply with the bat and conditions here will allow for them to go full Bazball. Captain Rohit Sharma scored 131 runs and Ravindra Jadeja scored 112 runs. For England, Mark Wood picked 4 wickets.

England scored 207/2 in just 35 overs. They are still traling by 238 runs with 8 wickets in hand. Rohit pats Duckett as the players walk off. What a reply this is from England. Everyone expected them to go full bazball here on a flat wicket but still scoring at nearly 6rpo is something incredible. India looked rattled for most parts as Duckett played all the shots he had in his arsenal. The sweep, reverse-sweep, the switch-hit, the paddle and what not. All this forced Rohit to opt for the Stokes strategy of employing the short-ball tactic and that worked when Siraj got Pope LBW. Amidst all this hype of bazball, Ashwin got his 500th wicket – a massive achievement in its own way. Earlier India after losing two quick wickets in the day resisted through Ashwin, Jurel and Bumrah to take the score to 445. This pitch still is a belter for batting and it’s not doing anything extravagant. Whether it deteriorates enough remains to be seen. For now England will come hard again and expect the onslaught to continue. Ben Duckett scored 133* runs and Ollie Pope scored 39 runs. For Team India, Ashwin & Siraj picked 1 wicket each.

Day 3
England bowled out for 319 runs in their 1st innings. Simply outstanding from India today and the circumstances of this performance makes it even more impressive. They were down and out last evening after taking a sound battering from England’s openers and were staring at a long day in the field. That didn’t come to pass though because India, despite being handicapped by the withdrawal of Ashwin, turned up today with an inspired bowling effort. Kuldeep Yadav, who bore the brunt of the onslaught, was a completely different bowler today to the one he was yesterday. Bumrah started it off with the wicket of Joe Root and that triggered a rather spectacular collapse. Stokes, with an 89-ball 41, was the only one to show any real resistance as England have been sent packing for just 319 after being 224/2 at one stage earlier today. India will come out to bat with a 126-run lead when at one stage it looked like they’d even struggle to get one. For England, Ben Duckett scored 153 runs and skipper Ben Stokes scored 41 runs. For Team India, Mohammed Siraj picked 4 wickets.

Team India scored 196/2 on Day 3 stumps. They have now lead of 322 runs with 8 wickets in hand. With such a big lead, India started slowly, and Jaiswal was very sedate to start. But once he got a few boundaries away off an Anderson over, he switched gears and rammed home another hundred. His second fifty came at rapid pace and deflated England. But Jaiswal had to go off due to back spasms and Patidar fell for a duck. Shubman Gill at the other end took his time, played at his own pace and is looking good for another ton. India is in a great state at this stage and how many do they need before they declare? Still the pitch is playing very well, and England will be still gung-ho about chasing anything.

– The last time India took first innings leads in excess of 100 in each of the first three Tests of a home series was against Sri Lanka in 1993/94 (293, 310 & 239).

Day 4
Team India declared their 2nd innings for 430/4 and set the huge target of 557 runs for England. Rohit calls them in. Sarfaraz Khan asks Jaiswal to go first. He is shooing him away. And Jaiswal walks off arms raised and being hugged by his mates waiting near the boundary’s edge. 556 the lead. Successive doubletons for Jaiswal who went off with back spasms yesterday. He came back today after Gill’s run-out and was back to what he does best – plunder runs. A hat-trick of sixes in one Anderson over the highlight. The likes of Sarfaraz Khan and the others chipped in with good knocks and really shoved their feet on England’s throats. For the first time in a long time under Stokes and Baz McCullum, England were defensive and just allowed things to drift. That’s the impact this innings from India has had on them. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 214* runs and Shubman Gill scored 91 runs. For England, Root, Harley & Rehan Ahmed picked 1 wicket each.

England bowled out for just 122 runs and lost the test by 434 runs. Rohit hugs Sarfaraz while Jadeja kisses the ball. India’s biggest-ever win in terms of runs in their 577-Test history. Who would have envisaged that after day 2! The last two days have all been India’s. They have come up trumps after losing Ashwin due to a family emergency. England have been blown away today. The relentless pressure of the runs on board has played on England who have collapsed to 122 in this fourth innings. Most of them expected the game to go into the final day but such was India’s dominance they have ended it on day 4 without even the need of the extra half-hour. Earlier Jaiswal came back to make a fine doublet-on after retiring hurt yesterday with back spasms. Gill was unlucky not to get an 100 while Sarfaraz made fifties in both innings. For England, Mark Wood scored 33 runs and Tom Hartley scored 16 runs. For Team India, Ravindra Jadeja picked 5 wickets.
