Story: Set in pre-Independence era movie revolves around Easa (Dhanush) lives in a village and whiles away his time doing nothing. The local king imposes rules on them and also on the instruction from the Britishers. The people in the village are never allowed to step into the village temple which they built.
One day, the arrival of his elder brother Sengolan (Shiva Rajkumar) in the village for the local festival results in the death of his mother as he is a revolutionary who is fighting against the Britishers. He believes that it is better to serve the Britishers as he thinks that they give him respect.
Easa starts his tumultuous journey siding with the British because he reasons, “Our kings might not give us slippers, but the Britishers are giving us boots.” For him, freedom is respect and for that he goes against the principle of his elder brother. On his first mission at his new job as a British soldier, he’s asked to fire at hundreds of Indians protesting against the British & that’s where it hits him.He shivers and realizes that he has blood in his hands. A dejected Miller decides to go back to his village, where he gets shooed away. His friends reveal that his brother Sengolan was amongst the freedom fighters. He is distraught and goes on to lead a nomadic life. Months later, he is discovered by a dacoit gang headed by Kannaya (Elango Kumaravel).
That’s where he decides to use his rechristened name, ‘Captain Miller, to destroy Britishers with the help of the revolutionaries in his village. A man, who has lost all hope in life, goes rogue, but he is forced to look back when he is faced with the trade-off between his selfishness, and doing what is right for his village. What good he does for his villagers as a revolutionary form the crux of the drama. It also ends with a perfect cliffhanger and setting up the base for its sequel.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in Hindi on its release date as trailer looks good and loved previous few movies of Dhanush.
Set in pre-Independence era, the British are looking for ’Miller’ who is a British soldier turned vigilante. The villagers are tired of the Analeesan’s antics and ask him to stay away from them. Analeesan, who has become ‘Miller’ after joining the British army, has gone rouge. Can they get to him?
Captain Miller has a layered story about a man’s fight for freedom, which is coupled with top-notch filmmaking. There’s a lot happening, and it warrants your complete attention right from the first frame. It’s about struggle for freedom, not just from Britishers but also from the oppressors. The freedom from guilt, the freedom from regret, and most importantly, the freedom from the thoughts that chains the characters to the past. The film has a socio-political undertone as well, which isn’t forced upon the audience, but rather just conveyed with intelligently crafted scenes by the filmmaker. It is one of the rarest films that tells the story of freedom struggle from the viewpoint of an oppressed class. Dhanush gets three different looks in the film, and he stands out tall among the sea of some brilliant performers. Composer GV Prakash Kumar is indeed the 2nd hero who manages to bring in emotions lacking in the film with his fabulous background score. The elevation BGM is one of the best in the recent times and coupled with bullet sounds, the music hits the crescendo throughout the film. It gives the old Hollywood vibe in some scenes – a composition you find in classic films.
On flipside, the first half, although it sets the premise for the film perfectly, might feel a bit dragged out in places. Songs are unnecessary placed and uneven and slow screenplay may test your patience. At the time of censor certification, it was revealed that the makers were asked to trim down 4 minutes from the action sequence in the film’s climax. While watching it in the theaters, the sequence plays out so well that one is left wondering about the trimmed-down minutes, wishing they could get a glimpse. Overall, watch for the epic climax scene and the union of different forces to fight against the Britishers. With a socio-political undertone, just like his previous films, caste discrimination is what rakes up the story and ultimately conveys a message that is relevant even today, despite being set in the pre-Independence era. My view on this movie Recommended.
