The Marvels Review: This superhero film has its moments but nowhere to its predecessor
The Marvels Movie Rating: 2 Stars

Finally watched The Marvels movie in Hindi in Cinemas. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, Iman Vellani, Zawe Ashton, Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh and Samuel L. Jackson
Director: Nia DaCosta
Release Date: 10th November 2023 in Cinemas

Story: Movie revolves around Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) who is reeling under the guilt of being the Annihilator, after destroying the Supreme Intelligence, and subsequently triggering a civil war. Hala, the home world of the Kree, is dying with no air, water and a diminishing sun.

Their new leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton) retrieves one half of the Quantum Bands of which Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) has the other half. She is searching for another band that she plans to use to save Hala though it will cause destruction elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) asks Captain Marvel and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) to investigate some glitch in the jump point. Monica and Carol touch the glitch-laden jump point at the same time. This results in both of them along with Kamala switching places through teleportation.

The three join up at a Skrull refugee colony on the planet Tarnax where talks of resettlement have dissolved between Emperor Dro’ge (Gary Lewis) and Dar-Benn. She rips open another jump point, which siphons the atmosphere of Tarnax into Hala to try and restore its air. Carol, Monica and Kamala now decide to understand how and why they managed to switch, how they can control and what should be done to stop Dar-Benn. Will they stop her is all about this movie.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinema on release date as liked the trailer and loved the 1st movie of this franchise.

A café owner who unexpectedly receives national attention when he is visited by thugs and underworld mafia looking for one “Leo Das”, he protests that it’s a case of mistaken identity but is eventually forced to drop his façade.

The Marvels is the 2nd film of this franchise. It’s a standard template of superheroes tasked with saving the world, but this time it’s a lazer, lights and ladies extravaganza. After long, Marvel Studios have come up with a story that is far less complicated, more fun and fuller of heart as well. The first 15-20 minutes are very entertaining as the superheroes get transported from one place to another, leading to madness. The unexpected comic relief that was once enjoyed by fans of earlier MCU seems to have returned. It’s not in-your-face and even slightly questionable like in Deadpool and neither is it flat falling like in the past couple of films. The bond shared by the three heroes is also worth it. This one break free from the complexity of previous storylines, delivering a refreshing and heartwarming take on superhero narratives, leaving you eager for more, especially after those enticing post-credit scenes. Performances are good especially by Imam Vellani.

On the flipside, it is the shortest film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and one gets a feeling that it gets over soon. One expects more, especially in the climax fight. The villain track is weak. The whole bit about the trio teleporting is complex and the layman might not fully get it. At times, it even seems that there are too many superheroes with only one not-so-evil villain, diminishing the power of the revenge story. A few developments are bewildering, especially why Carol never failed to repair Hala’s problems all these years. Park Seo Joon’s role- or lack thereof- may just become a major downfall for fans of the star who probably went in expecting more than one verse of singing and short-handed dialogues that ended without climatic glory for Prince Yan. His cameo came off as more of an incomplete storyline. Towards the end of the movie, there are so many things in so many places breaking into each other that you almost want them to take a breather. Neither story is impactful nor direction.

Overall, Marvel Studios is losing its charm. After giving extra-ordinary movies, MCU fails to create magic due to poor stories and direction. The Marvels could have been made with Captain Marvel with different story but attempt to create more superheroes leave this movie an average fare. My view on this movie Time Pass.
