Thank God Review: Predictable yet entertaining fantasy comedy drama with lots of life lessons
Thank God Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars

Finally watched Thank God movie on Amazon Prime Video. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh
Director: Indra Kumar
Release Date: 28th October 2022 in Cinemas & digital premiere from 20th December 2022 on Prime Video

Story: It is an official remake of the 2009 Danish film Sorte Kugler (What Goes Around) which revolves around Ayaan Kapoor (Sidharth Malhotra) who lives with his wife Ruhi (Rakul Preet Singh) and little daughter Pihu (Kiara Khanna). He is a bankrupt real estate agent and struggles to crack a deal for his house so frustrated with his life also isn’t on his best behavior with either wife Ruhi or with daughter Pihu.

He’s got anger management issues, is low on self-esteem, is jealous as hell and adores Nora Fatehi as a fantasy figure. On his daughter’s birthday as he’s rushing to meet a prospective client, Ayaan meets with a car accident and instead of waking up in the operating room, he wakes up in the afterlife itself.

This version of afterlife consists of a giant stadium full of souls, who’d be judging him in a game show called “The Game Of Life”, hosted by CG aka Chitragupta (Ajay Devgn). As per game rule, if he wins enough white balls, he’ll be sent back to be resurrected. However, an abundance of black balls would mean an eternity spent in hell. What happens ultimately? Does Ayaan die or does he remain alive?

Positives
1. Performances
2. Direction
3. Story
4. Climax
5. Cinematography

Negatives
1. Music
2. Length
3. Screenplay

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on digital premiere because it looks good in parts only so skipped theatrical release.

An egoistic real estate broker in huge debts, meets with an accident. God appears in front of him and informs him that he will have to play a “Game Of Life”. If he wins, he will be sent back to earth and if not, he will be sent to hell.

Thank God story is quite fresh but but their screenplay is not half as good and funny as it should’ve been. The episodes in the drama rarely, if ever, evoke loud laughter. Yes, some scenes will be found entertaining but not universally. Since the game show format is continued all through the film, it does get repetitive and even boring after some time. The biggest minus point, of course, is that the viewers do not find the proceedings hilarious, which is what they should’ve been. The drama takes a serious turn in the second half. That portion is slightly emotional too. But the emotions do not make up for the dullness of the screenplay in the first half. Direction is fairly nice. While he has handled the emotional part of the drama with maturity, he has not been able to evoke much laughter in the comic scenes.

What’s praiseworthy is that while giving out the message, the film doesn’t turn preachy. Moreover, it’s a clean entertainer and hence, appeals to the family. The tasks related to anger, greed, jealousy, and delusion are okay since it was shown in the promos. The bank robbery sequences here stand out, the first one for being hilarious and the other for being touching. The twist in the last act is unexpected and it makes for a superb watch. The film ends on a lovely note. Overall, the story is stuck in the 90s and oversimplified but find favor for being a clean entertainer, as the film has a message or two about moving on about tribulations, being humane and the importance of one’s family. It has lighthearted moments and deliver an entertainer with a message about karma and stays the course without making the narrative too heavy or dark. If you have not seen this movie in theatre watch this one on OTT. My view on this movie Recommended
