Team India squad for upcoming test series against South Africa announced. The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked an 18-member squad for the upcoming 3-match Test series against South Africa starting from 26th December 2021. The Test series will form a part of the new cycle of the ICC World Test Championship.

Virat Kohli will lead the team and Rohit Sharma will be vice-captain and also he will be permanent skipper of ODI as well after T20. Here is the official tweet from BCCI:

India’s Test squad: Virat Kohli (Captain), Rohit Sharma (vice-captain), KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wk), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), R Ashwin, Jayant Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur, Md. Siraj.

Standby Players: Navdeep Saini, Saurabh Kumar, Deepak Chahar, Arzan Nagwaswalla.

India have been hampered in the spin department heading into the series with their two first-choice left-arm spinners Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel getting ruled out due to injuries. As a result, offspinner Jayant Yadav, who played in Mumbai against New Zealand recently, has managed to hold onto his spot as the second spinner behind R Ashwin. India will also be without Shubman Gill who has not been considered as a result of an injury.

Pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami who were rested for the New Zealand series at home, return to the set-up again on expected lines. Suryakumar Yadav, who was in the Test squad for the last two assignments without getting a game, has been dropped. KS Bharat, who had filled in for the injured Wriddhiman Saha against New Zealand, has also been left out as India’s first-choice keeper Rishabh Pant returns. KL Rahul who was ruled out of the New Zealand Tests is back alongside Shardul Thakur.

Meanwhile, under-fire batter Ajinkya Rahane who lost the vice-captain position has managed to hold on to his spot in the Test squad. But he is expected to face stiff competition for a place in the playing XI with the selectors also picking Shreyas Iyer and Hanuma Vihari. While Iyer recently impressed on debut, Vihari has been amongst the runs for India A in South Africa.

In order to provide ample cover for the pace attack, the selectors have also named three fast bowlers Navdeep Saini, Deepak Chahar and Arzan Nagwaswalla as standbys. Left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar also gets a look-in as the fourth standby player due to the injuries sustained by Jadeja and Axar. All four standby players are already in South Africa as part of the India A squad.

India’s tour of South Africa has been pushed back by a week after both the boards mutually decided to start the series with the Boxing Day Test in Centurion. India will now open the tour at SuperSport Park on December 26 and will play two more Tests and three ODIs. The four-match T20I series has been scrapped with the boards announcing that it will be played at a later date.
