Rajasthan Royals scored 169/3 in their 20 overs after batting first. The average first innings score at Wankhede this season is 142 and those last two overs, which went for 42 runs, has given RR a more than competitive total. Their innings never got going until the 19th over as the batters struggled to cope with the two-paced nature of the wicket. Buttler kept hanging in there and eventually managed to strike them well. Padikkal and Hetmyer made useful contributions and added crucial partnerships with Buttler. The dew seemed to be settling in by the time RCB’s death overs started and that might just help them in the chase. Royal Challengers Bangalore successfully chased the target and scored only 173/6 in their 19.1 overs and won the game by 4 wickets. Purely from the tactical side of things, the last 30-odd minutes would be right up there among the worst phases of cricket in a T20 game. The move to hold Chahal back so much takes the cake, and that blunder was compounded by some listless bowling from the others who were simply not bowling to their fields, leaking boundaries at the rate of knots. Take no credit away from DK and co. though. Because RCB seemed done at one stage, undoing their openers’ work with a mini-collapse and just when it seemed like RR were cruising to another win, DK came to the party. His assault off Ashwin turned the game upside down, and RCB never looked back thereafter. Shahbaz played the ideal foil in a game-changing partnership, with Harshal then doing the finishing bits. RR definitely had a defendable total, but were undone by some elementary mistakes and the genius of one of IPL’s under-rated finishers. Shahbaz Ahmed scored 45 runs of 36 balls and Dinesh Karthik score 44* runs of 23 balls. For RR, Chahal & Boult pick 2 wickets each.
