Serious Men Movie Review: This father-son drama deserves a watch
Serious Men Movie Rating: 3.5 stars
Just watched Serious Men movie on Netflix. So let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.
Cast: Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Nassar, Indira Tiwari, Aakshath Das, Shweta Basu Prasad, Sanjay Narvekar
Director: Sudhir Mishra
Release Date: 2nd Oct on Netflix
Story: It is based on Manu Joseph’s novel of the same name, Sudhir Mishra’s adaptation of Serious Men is a bitingly sharp, satirical look at Aspirational India. Ayyan Mani(Nawazuddin Siddiqui), a Tamil Dalit who lives in a Mumbai slum with his wife (Indira Tiwari) and son (Aakshath Das), represents a here-and-now Indian who wants a better life, and will do anything he can in order to achieve it, even if the things he does may not pass a strict moral or ethical metric. But when the chips were stacked against you generations before you were born, what is right, and what is wrong? The answers, in this thought-provoking film, lie somewhere in between.
It captures the agony, angst and anger of a man who knows he is “a small molecule in this society”. He resorts to irreverence and subterfuge as rebellion. He seeks to subvert the social structure that has painted his ilk into a corner and doomed them to never-ending misery. He is determined not to let his son be encumbered by social constraints.
Love this Dialogues “It takes four generations, Ayyan sermonizes to his wife in an early scene, for a man to summit the social ladder. He tells her that they belong to the second generation, which he likes to call ‘2G’. It is a generation that is incapable of having a good time. Their child will belong to the third generation — highly educated and capable of pondering life’s bigger questions, like why some condoms have dots on them. And his child, Ayyan’s grandchild, will have nothing to work for, and indeed, no reason to work.”
Positives
1. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and supporting cast with superlative performances
2. Story
3. Direction
4. Cinematography
5. Screenplay
Negatives
1. Climax could have been better
2. Music
3. Length
Durgesh Tiwary’s View : Before sharing my review must say while bigger stars boast about physical transformations and surviving six-month boot camps for a movie, Nawaz effortlessly slips into his characters without so much as a change in hairstyle.
If it is movie of Nawazuddin Siddiqui I don’t think twice before watching it. Trailer was very good and as usual movie is very good. It will show the harsh reality of out society and how a middle class father want his son to be the best. The second half too has its share of some good sequences but the engagement factor is not consistent here, which hampers the impact.
It slow pace and execution may not like by youngsters but if you love realistic and different Bollywood movie go for it. Recommended !!
