Cast: Vikrant Massey, Deepak Dobriyal, Darshan Jariwala and Akash Khurana
Director: Aditya Nimbalkar
Release Date: 13th September 2024 on Netflix
Story: Movie is loosely based on 2006 Noida serial murders which is famous as Nithari Case. Revolves around Prem (Vikrant Massey) in a big villa owned by businessman Balbir Bassi (Akash Khurana) in a Noida Sector 36. Balbir is based in Karnal, Haryana and rarely comes down to Delhi to live in his lavish bungalow. Hence, Prem is all alone and he abducts children from a nearby slum settlement and kills them.
Distraught parents have been trying to lodge complaints at the local police station headed by sub-inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal) who has been negligent about filing FIRs or making any attempt to look for the missing kids. It’s only when Prem tries to kidnap Ram Charan’s daughter Vaidehi (Ihana Kaur) that he decides to pursue the case.
An adult girl Chumki Ghosh (Tanushree Das) is also missing and she is last spotted outside Balbir’s bungalow. Pandey initially sets out looking for Chumki and missing kids, but the case becomes much bigger with people in power taking extra measures to thwart Pandey’s investigation. Deep into the case, Pandey realizes that there are bigger players, and Prem might just be one of the pawns. So, will Pandey succeed in his mission to unearth the complete mystery?

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch in my free time as it’s based on true events. A previously corrupt and ignorant cop, Ram Charan Pandey decides to confront the serial killer Prem Singh after several children go missing, following a near assault on his own daughter, exposing the dark underbelly of the city.
Sector 36 is a shocking tale of rape and murder which is inspired by true events. Screenplay is so stark that it shocks the viewers even though one has read about most of the incidents, modus operandi adopted, etc. The complete connivance of the police machinery is so loud and clear that it makes the audience wonder if this could be for real. The best part about the screenplay is that it doesn’t let the viewers’ attention decrease at any time. The turns and twists in the drama are so many that the audience remains involved and engrossed. The film’s relentless pace and dark lighting heighten the tension, with no unnecessary songs to disrupt the flow. Nimbalkar excels in execution, creating a strong impression with his first film. The background score is appropriately subtle, allowing the narrative to maintain its grip. The twists leading to the climax are particularly shocking, leaving a lasting impression. The makers also seem to deliver a social message by juxtaposing a quick police reaction on a high-profile kidnapping case even as Pandey fights a lone battle for the have-nots. The film talks of how class demarcation is so evident in our society that when a few go missing, no one seems to bother much until it hits home. Vikrant Massey stands out with a restrained performance while Deepak Dobriyal excels. Aditya Nimbalkar’s direction is splendid. It’s difficult to believe that as a first timer, he has been able to do such a fine job.
On the flipside, the film doesn’t make for an easy watch. The various murders which occur are visceral to the extreme. Despite the compelling storyline, the film struggles to match the emotional intensity of the real-life events it draws inspiration from. The latter half which focuses on investigative procedures and introduces new characters, becomes somewhat chaotic. At 2 hours 4 minutes, the film is a stretch especially when you know who the culprit is and his modus operandi of luring kids into the horror house. Pandey’s change of heart from a callous, corrupt police officer to one determined to solve the case seems too sudden as well. Movie is a brutal, hard-to-stomach story, but one that needed to be told. Though the film may not fully capture the raw horror of the Nithari killings, it delivers a tense and unsettling narrative that will resonate with fans of the crime thriller genre. While not for everyone, it is a stark reminder of the real-life horrors that can lurk beneath ordinary facades. My view on this movie Highly Recommended.
