Director: Sameer Vidwans
Release Date: 29th June 2023 in Cinemas
Story: Movie revolves around Satyaprem alias Sattu (Kartik Aaryan) who lives with his parents Narayanbhai (Gajraj Rao) and Diwaliben (Supriya Pathak Kapur), and younger sister Sejal (Shikha Talsania). He is desperate to get married.
During Navratri, he meets Katha (Kiara Advani) who is a dancer-singer. It is love at first sight, but she doesn’t reciprocate. Katha holds a secret within her and refrains from letting it out but is crestfallen to know that she already has a boyfriend Tapan (Arjun Aneja).
After a year, things go wrong between Katha and Tapan and he learns that she had broken off with her beau. When he comes to meet her, he finds she’d tried to commit suicide and rushes her to a hospital, saving her life. Impressed by his unselfish act and honest ways, her father Harikishen (Siddharth Randeria) who runs a popular sweets shop wants to marry her off to him despite Satyaprem not being employed and belonging to lower economic strata than them.
Katha initially doesn’t want this forced marriage but later agrees. She’s uncomfortable with sleeping with Satyaprem and uses his habit of snoring loudly in order to avoid that. But the truth is much deeper and bitter. Katha has been a victim of date rape and hence funds herself in a mental block about sexual relations. It takes a while for Satyaprem to find that out. Once he does so, he realises that instead of trying to consummate his marriage, he should first try to win Katha’s heart. How he goes about doing so forms the crux of the story.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on release day in cinemas as it looks very beautiful and loved this couple last movie.
A middle-class boy in Ahmedabad, Satyaprem falling in one-sided love with Katha, who is coping with her breakup with Tapan. Through the journey, they discover each other’s life and complement in accomplishing what was left halfway.
Satyaprem Ki Katha is a pure romantic saga after a long time and comes across as a breeze of fresh air in the middle of big-ticket action films and larger-than-life entertainers. The emotions hit the right note, whereas the character arcs for the two leads are well-defined, with an element of redemption towards the second half. The comic portion in the initial frames brings a smile, and the romantic track unfolds in a delightful way but the real win for Satyaprem Ki Katha is in getting the emotions right. It’s an aspirational protagonist after a while as every girl would want to be affiliated with an understanding male protagonist like Satyaprem. The breathtaking cinematography especially in the songs is picturesque and enhances the overall visual appeal of the film. The film shows a plausible scenario where the women of the family are supportive of Katha’s plight while her father and father-in-law both find themselves repulsed by it. Thankfully, her husband is woke enough to understand the concept of date rape and supports her thoroughly.
The first half has opulent sets, stylish costumes and tenderness in Satyaprem’s love story with Katha. The second half is a whole new world. As the drama heightens, intrigue grows and so do clichés. The conflict is created in a subtle way, paving way for a cathartic climax. The treatment given to the film is mature and tight. It could have been tighter and more compact. It is a heart-tugging film but compromises on entertainment. The screenplay gets banal at some places and the lack of effort on certain dialogues. The film could have benefited from tighter editing in these portions to maintain a more consistent pace. The film is too lengthy and could have been curtailed. A few things are not convincing. For instance, why did Satyaprem wait till the next Navratri to meet Katha. Also, impact could have been better if sattu seen as lawyer for which he submitted the form.
Overall, movie is a love story with the heart at its right place. It’s Endearing, Emotional, and Entertaining with strong performances by the two leads Kartik and Kiara. Slight trimming was needed. The subject does move you and leaves you with much to think about, however, it tends to take the more emotional route than an entertaining one. My view on this movie Time Pass.
