Salt City Review: A disappointing family drama that doesn’t live up to the expectations
Salt City Web Series Rating: 1.5 Stars
Just watched Salt City Web Series on Sony LIV. Let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this web series.
Cast: Piyush Mishra, Navni Parihar, Divyendu Sharma, Monica Chaudhary, Pranay Pachauri, Gauahar Khan, Jitin Gulati and Eisha Chopra
Director: Rishabh Anupam Sahay
Release Date: 16th June 2022 (Sony LIV)
Duration: 7 Episodes/ 30 Minutes
Story: Story revolves around Bajpai family where the patriarch Harish Bajpai (Piyush Mishra) has moved to Mumbai at least 25-30 years ago. However, he doesn’t love the city. He often complains about the city’s humidity, the salt being excessive in the water and the air that ruins everything good.
Harish is living with his homemaker wife Triveni (Navni Parihar), younger son Saurabh (Divyendu Sharma) who is towing contractor and struggling to do something useful in life and niece Ela (Monica Chaudhary). He has a big family but the bond isn’t strong. His elder son Aman (Manish Anand) lives separately with his wife Gunjan (Gauahar Khan) and working with his father-in-law who is helping him to his business plan.
His another son Nikhil (Pranay Pachauri) has moved out to do something big in his life but fails to achieve. There are lots of differences or saltiness between the family member. He likes his sister-in-law Gunjan who used to be his senior in college and jealous of his elder brother life. Both Nikhil and Aman didn’t like Saurabh because he is not anything big like them.
During the Ela wedding, all family comes together at one roof including Harish elder daughter Esha (Eisha Chopra) and son-in-law Sukesh (Jitin Gulati). On the wedding a shocker comes to family which stake the Ela wedding. What was the shocker and how Bajpai family handle the situation is all about this series. Show ends on a very cryptic note that can leave you wondering if the hint was for a new season or just a step towards a new beginning.
Positives
1. Excellent Performances
2. Story
3. Few moments
Negatives
1. Length
2. Stretched
3. Unnecessary Sub-plot
4. Screenplay
5. Direction
Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer planned to watch in my free time as always loved family drama and story looks interesting of this series.
Salt City delves into the complexities of relationships within the Bajpai family. The show explores their journey of exploring the past, dealing with a bitter present, and unfolding a promising future. Harish pretends to be a family man. He has three sons and two daughters but no clue about their lives. As their stories unfold, the drama hidden in this family comes alive.
Series is made to show what goes on in a normal but broken and migrated family in the city of Mumbai. It depicts some people’s passion for making it big in the city and living a lavish life. However, not everyone succeeds the way they want. The show also shows how some people are physically living here, but mentally, they’re still at the place where they originally lived. It highlighted several relevant issues and shows how carefree and unbothered a part of today’s youth is; there’s an unhappy marriage despite the guy being rich and well-settled, how the people close to us hurt the most at times and how the family always stands by a person’s side in the end.
The issues in the Bajpai family are many. However, the first four episodes are very slow and require too much patience for the story to unfold. It’s a show where the edit button would’ve helped a lot. Due to the slow pace, the problems in the family seemed unimportant initially. So many subplots also leave you confused about where the story is going. From the 5th episode, the web show takes an intense turn. It’s the same twist that helps in concluding the family drama dramatically. Series could’ve been a better web series if the screenplay didn’t lag in the first four episodes. One wouldn’t want to keep watching it become better from the fifth episode.
Overall, series is a bland, broken family drama that fails to engross one. The slow pace takes away the emotional connection one could’ve had with the characters. The plot is very scattered at the beginning, which takes a lot of time to make sense. There are many talks about how Mumbai affects people and things. But none of it is quite impactful. My view on this series Not Recommended.
