Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi Review: Must watch satire for everyone who have not watched yet
Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars

Finally watched Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi movie in Hindi on Netflix. So let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Supriya Pathak Kapur, Manoj Pahwa, Vinay Pathak, Vikrant Massey, Konkona Sen Sharma, Deepika Amin, Parambrata Chattopadhyay, Naseeruddin Shah, Ninad Kamat and Rajendra Gupta
Director: Seema Pahwa
Release Date: 24th April 2021 on Netflix

Story: Movie is a satire which talks about the politics of a large family against the backdrop of the patriarch’s death. Ramprasad Bhargava (Naseeruddin Shah) is an old aged patriarch who suddenly passes away while teaching piano at his house to a kid in the neighbourhood. He resided with his wife, addressed as Amma (Supriya Pathak) by one and all.

Their sons and daughters live in different parts of the country. They all rush to Ramprasad’s mansion, located in a small house in Lucknow, UP as soon as they get the news. Their four sons live in different cities/towns and reach home for the funeral, one by one. The eldest is Gajraj (Manoj Pahwa), the second is Manoj (Ninad Kamat), the third is Pankaj (Vinay Pathak) and the youngest is Nishant (Parambrata Chatterjee).

Their wives are Sushma (Deepika Amin), Sulekha (Divya Jagdale), Pratibha (Sadiya Siddiqui) and Seema (Konkona Sen Sharma) respectively. Bhargava and Amma have two married daughters too and the elder (Anubha Fatehpuria) and the younger (Sarika Singh), both of who are accompanied by their respective husbands, Prakash (Brijendra Kala) and the younger one (Shrikant Verma).

What should have been a period of mourning for the family results in chaos as past wounds resurface. On top of that Seema does not come that leads to gossip and speculation among the wives of the other sons. Meanwhile, since Ramprasad passed away on December 19, the pandit announces that the tehrvi will hence fall on January 1. It leads to an argument in the family as some feel it will be awkward for people to attend such a ceremony on the first day of the year. The issue resolves and then, another problem arises. Ramprasad’s children come to know that the patriarch had opted for a loan of Rs. 10 lakhs and that he has returned only Rs. 3 lakhs. It is now their responsibility to repay the rest of the amount.

While going through his diary, they come to know that he took the said loan as his children were demanding money from him. The grandchildren are least bothered about the death of their grandfather and are having a fun reunion. She realises that it’ll be difficult for her to stay in the haveli all alone. Another bothersome question is about where Amma will now stay. Amma’s brother (Vineet Kumar), his wife (Yamini Das), and Ramprasad’s sister (Pushpa Joshi) don’t really make matters any better. Even if she chooses to stay with their sons, it seems that they won’t be ready to accept her. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Positives
1. Brilliant Performances
2. Story
3. Cinematography
4. Direction
5. Screenplay

Negatives
1. Climax
2. Few portions of 2nd Half
3. Dialogues
4. Music

Durgesh Tiwary’s View : > When I watched the trailer planned to watch this movie in my free time because unable to watch this movie in cinemas due to Covid-19 and story looks engaging with powerful cast.

In the opening scenes of the film, the Bhargava family’s patriarch, Ram Prasad Bhargava dies suddenly, bringing his large family back into their old bungalow where his wife Savitri now lives alone. The arrival of six children and various other relatives adds to the chaos. Old contentions are brought into limelight and the family struggles to make it through the 13 days of mourning. To exacerbate the situation, it is revealed that Ramprasad owes the banks a huge debt and now his children must bear the brunt of paying it back.

The story deals with family relations which are more formal till all members assemble on an occasion like death, after which reality hits everyone hard. It is interesting and quite insightful. Seema Pahwa’s screenplay suggests that she has observed families and the interactions between family members very closely. The unfolding drama becomes identifiable because every viewer will find at least a couple of characters similar to those in his/her family.

We have seen weddings and what goes around them. Here’s a funeral and the tug of war that goes around it. Seema Pahwa in her directorial debut is finding her voice and addressing a substantial conversation. I am in to see her make more of these. The climax does become a little preachy, but the journey is cathartic. This is a Tehrvi you should not be missing. My View on this movie Highly Recommended!!
