Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas in my free time as loved the trailer and liked Dhanush earlier movies.

The film follows Kathavaraayan “Raayan”, a fast-food hotel owner in North Chennai, who hunts down the gangs who had ruined his family earlier.

Raayan has a routine story but and his screenplay is also not very novel but tries to give it a fresh treatment and he succeeds in parts. What yet stand the drama in good stead are the emotions between the four siblings. Dialogues are quite nice. The biggest highlight for Raayan, right from its posters, was the brilliant color palette, which is visible in the cinematography by Om Prakash as well. The beautiful shots, colors, and camera work make Raayan nothing short of a visual treat. The energetic music is sure to give goosebumps and elevate the film to a whole new level. One major aspect that needs to be mentioned is the beautiful use of silence in the film, which helps build the tension in each scene. Another department that has to be mentioned is the film’s action department, which has managed to choreograph magnificent fight sequences, which are sure to give the audience a thrill. Each fight sequence is unlike the one before it and plays out beautifully on screen. Dhanush does a terrific job in the title role. He lives the character of Raayan and delivers an outstanding performance. His direction is remarkable. Given the routine script, he narrates the drama with maturity. It is a credit to the strength of Dhanush’s command over storytelling and the performances that Raayan manage to overcome its weakest aspect – predictability.

On the flipside, while the film is technically brilliant, it lags behind when it comes to the story. Raayan’s story follows the same betrayal and revenge arc, something that has been seen time and again in Indian cinema. The film, while edited brilliantly, still could have afforded to be 5-10 minutes shorter. There is no strong reason for the conflict between their brothers. The first half of the movie runs on a flat note with predictable screenplay. It reaches a peak during the interval. The second half again seems predictable until the hospital scene. The climax sequences could have been better though. There is no strong hook to illustrate the conflict between SJ Suryah and Dhanush. The reasons provided are unconvincing. The film caters mainly to action movie enthusiasts and may not be suitable for family audiences due to its violent content. Overall, movie deserves to be watched in theaters especially for the beautiful visuals, action, camerawork as well as the beautiful music. It is a good one-time-watch, guaranteeing an emotional yet fun ride that one can catch with their friends. My view on this movie Recommended for Dhanush and action lovers.
