Mithya Review: This psychological thriller series does not have much to offer
Mithya Web Series Rating: 1.5 Stars
Just watched Mithya web series on Zee5 Premium. So let’s analyze the cast, release date, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this web series.
Cast: Huma Qureshi, Avantika Dassani, Parambrata Chatterjee, Rajit Kapur, Indraneil Sengupta and Samir Soni
Director: Rohan Sippy
Release Date: 18th January 2022 (Zee5 Premium)
Duration: 6 Episodes/ 32 Minutes
Story: Series adapted from the British TV show Cheat. It is set in Darjeeling and follows the life of Juhi (Huma Qureshi) who is a Hindi literature professor. Professionally she is the most qualified candidate for the post of university’s Head of Department (HOD) and an aspiring writer.
On the personal front, she is married to Neil (Parambrata Chatterjee) and they are trying to have a child. From a distance everything appears to be in order and Juhi appears to be content with her life. However, as we learn more about her, scenes such as when she has sexual fantasies about her colleague Vishal (Indraneil Sengupta), who proposes her name for the HOD position, or when she is discussing her marital life with her best friend Sharmistha (Naina Sareen), reveals the issues she is dealing in her day-to-day life.
Rhea (Avantika Dassani) is the daughter of a university trustee Rajguru (Samir Soni) and Juhi’s student. She always comes late to college and never engages in the class. At first glance, she appears to be a spoilt brat and an oddball, but there was a lot more to her than meets the eye. The same is proved when the series of events starts after Juhi accuses Rhea of cheating and even fails her due to plagiarism, despite Rhea’s pleas that she is innocent.
What begins as an innocuous academic dispute quickly escalates into complex psychological warfare with hints of crime. Starting from the disappearance of Juhi’s cat to her spouse being honey-trapped, Juhi seems to be in a real mess. Right from the first episode, scenes show Neil’s body and police investigating the case. So, we already know that Juhi’s seemingly perfect life is jeopardised, but how? Is Rhea the mastermind behind it all? Is it just because Juhi failed her? Across the whole drama, everything builds up to the moment in the prison visiting room when Juhi and Rhea face each other head-on, making both of them plausible suspects and transporting us to the events of the past.
Positives
1. Cinematography
2. Performances
Negatives
1. Story
2. Screenplay
3. Direction
4. Climax
Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I have watched the trailer of this series planned to watch in free time as it looks intriguing murder mystery drama and I always loved this genre
Hindi literature professor Juhi Adhikari accuses first-year student Rhea Rajguru of plagiarism when the latter submits her end-of-term dissertation. The allegation sets off a twisty chain of events as the younger woman seethes with rage.
Psychological thriller films and web series are always considered good because they contain mystery, drama, action and many other things, which keep the audience in their seats. However, Mithya is not the case with the false series. Barring the central characters hardly any artist can manage to keep the audience captivated with their acting. It is good that there are only 6 episodes of this series, because if there were more than this, then the story of the series could have become a bit cumbersome. The best part of the series which is worth watching is the toxic relationship between a teacher and a student.
The biggest achievement the show manages to achieve is keeping a big secret intact till the end. The show takes many lazy turns. The way the murder is played by the end of every episode dilutes the entire purpose. The music is less thrilling and more horror show inspired. It gets into philosophy of Mithya (untruth) too but never explored enough that you connect the happenings to it. Mithya is stretched and the makers do not take extra efforts to make it look crisp. Baring a very few good things, the show doesn’t have much to offer. My View on this web-series Not Recommended
