Release Date: 6th October 2023 in Cinemas

Story: Set in 1989, movie revolves around Jaswant Singh Gill (Akshay Kumar) who is working as engineer in Coal India, Raniganj. A tragedy struck in the Mahabir colliery in Raniganj. While triggering blasts to extract coal, the underground water table ruptured under pressure, unleashing a torrent of water and risking the lives of 65 miners trapped inside.

The next morning, Jaswant volunteers to rescue the miners. D Sen (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) is a local contactor who was sent to rescue the miners, but his plan failed. When the usual methods failed, Jaswant suggested to drill a well and deploy a specially crafted rescue capsule. In the absence of a crane and corruption within Coal India, the film shows how Gill and his bunch of valiant experts rescued all 65 miners, one by one through the innovative capsule.

Through the three days that the rescue operation goes on for, Gill and his team face numerous challenges and hurdles, but they eventually succeed in their mission, making it one of the greatest and grittiest rescue operations in the country.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinema on release date as loved the trailer and it’s based on real life incident.

The film is based on Jaswant Singh Gill who was a brave and diligent mining engineer from IIT Dhanbad who rescued 65 trapped miners at the Raniganj Coalfields in 1989.

Mission Raniganj is a very engaging and thrilling film that will keep you on the edge of your seats. Screenplay is fast-paced and exciting. The film makes the effort to understand the mentality of the miners who are scared for their lives. The arguments that they have reflect the trauma and worry they are experiencing. Director Tinu scores well in the portions that highlight the miners and their problems. The film is high on emotions and by the end of it, one is sure to have chills through their spine. The obstacles that Jaswant encounters from locating the miners to establishing contact to maneuvering politics make for a great watch. The movie opens with quick introductions to the principal characters and eases right into an edge-of-the-seat thriller, which keeps up its tempo till the end. This is as much a story about survival and hanging on to a fine thread of hope as it is about a man, Jaswant Singh Gill, who is driven, dedicated, and relentless in his pursuit to save lives. There is plenty of drama and suspense in this true-life story, added with stellar performances from the entire ensemble, and a great background score, which creates an immersive and engaging experience. The song ‘Jeetega’ gives instant goosebumps.

On the flipside, the biggest killjoy of the film is the shoddy VFX. Let’s just say that it is so bad that it will distract you from engaging with the film. The first half is a bit weak and doesn’t create the desired impact. There’s no character buildup for you to feel for them. The writing is convenient at a few instances, which if avoided, could have made the film even more compelling than it already is. The film gets unnecessarily loud in Certains portions. The ferocious water waiting to explode in the mine looks and sounds anything but real, and the supporting performances also don’t hold up. It has a pool of talented actors, who, unfortunately, were wasted. I mean, there are actors like Pavan Malhotra, Kumud Mishra, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola and Jameel Khan in this film. Yet, they were reduced to mere caricatures at times. There’s no attempt to understand who Gill was as a person beyond the basic information available on the internet.

Bringing true events to screen and honoring the velour of India’s unsung heroes is great, provided the storytelling does justice to the brave hearts and the perilous events that unfolded. Overall, movie is great attempt at telling an important and inspiring story of late Jaswant Singh Gill. Portrayal of a brave attempt made to rescue the poor and not just billionaires in submersibles is great, but it takes more than intent to get the sentiment across. It makes an impact due to the subject, clap worthy moments in the second half and nail-biting moments in the climax. My view on this movie Highly Recommended.
