Mission Majnu Review: Excellent performances and enthralling moments makes this spy thriller an entertaining watch
Mission Majnu Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars

Just watched Mission Majnu movie on Netflix. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Sidharth Malhotra, Rashmika Mandannaa, Zakir Hussain, Parmit Sethi, Kumud Mishra and Sharib Hashmi
Director: Shantanu Bagchi
Release Date: 20th January 2023 on Netflix

Story: Set in the 1970s, the film is based on true events and tells the story of a covert spy agent who resides in Pakistan. India successfully carries out its first nuclear bomb test, which shocks Pakistan. The neighboring country feels it is a threat and decides to build a nuclear bomb to demolish India. Pakistan takes the assistance of a great scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan (Mir Sarwar) for this task.

On the other hand, Amandeep Ajitpal Singh (Sidharth Malhotra) is a RAW agent in Pakistan. He lives in the neighboring country as undercover as a tailor in Pakistan. He develops a crush on the blind daughter Nasreen (Rashmika Mandanna) of one of the relatives of his boss and they soon get married. She’s supposedly his cover but he soon develops genuine feelings for her. Meanwhile his handler assigned him the task of finding out if Pakistan is making a nuclear bomb.

The movie follows Amandeep’s mission, as he’s constantly subjected to insults as his father dies by suicide for being a traitor, a story that’s only given a cursory mention. Aiding him are RAW agents Raman Singh alias Maulvi (Kumud Mishra) and Aslam Usmaniya (Sharib Hashmi). This by no means is an easy assignment but how he succeeds in his mission is the crux of the story.

Positives
1. Excellent Performances
2. Screenplay
3. Climax
4. Direction

Negatives
1. Music
2. Length
3. Story lacks Novelty

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on premiere day because loved the trailer and inspired by true events.

It’s the 1970s in Pakistan when the nation conducted a covert nuclear weapons test. An Indian undercover spy, Amandeep Singh, needs to expose it and clear the stigma of being called a traitor’s son while leading a happily married life with a blind Pakistani woman, Nasreen and a baby on the way.

Mission Majnu story about secret service agents which is of the kind one has seen in earlier films. Therefore, the incidents are mostly predictable. The intention to tell the unknown story of one of India’s most significant missions is appreciable. The movie starts well and gets straight to the point without wasting much time. A few aspects, like how the Pakistan army controls the country and how changes in government would have an effect on intelligence agencies, are portrayed nicely. The film moves at a fast pace for the most part. The director also manages to keep one on the edge of the seat on many occasions when Amandeep’s cover seems close to being blown. The milieu of 1970s Pakistan is also created appropriately.

Its isn’t dramatic enough. While the core plot has the vibe of the leads racing against time, the film doesn’t have those dramatic high points to keep you on the edge of your seat. A film on this subject probably warranted a larger dose of nationalistic scenes, to amp up the overall impact of the film towards the end. Especially in the second half, a few sequences go over the board and seem totally unbelievable. Till then, the film was handled in a sensible manner, but the second hour went for a toss completely. The action part is weak, and many logics were completely ignored, which shouldn’t be the case for a spy film. The character doesn’t have enough challenges to accomplish the mission.

Overall, Movie is a gripping saga that works due to the tight script, intelligently written scenes, taut execution, and a memorable performance by Sidharth Malhotra and others in the cast. It has good moments here and there, but it isn’t a memorable outing due to its flaws. Siddarth breathes life into this spy thriller, and the film has a good first hour. If you could ignore the logics, the film ends up a good watch. The film has plenty of twists and turns to offer and should have released in cinemas instead of OTT directly. My view on this movie Highly Recommended
