South Africa scored 249/4 runs in 40 overs after batting first. India need exactly 250 to go 1-0 up in this 3-match series. This is a very competitive score on a pitch which has been very balanced. There’s seam and swing for the paces, spin for the tweakers, nice bounce, fast outfield and value for shots played by the batters both teams will feel they are in with a chance. Rain reduced this contest to a 40-over game, the start was scratchy by the visitors, but de Kock and Malan held firm, adding 49. The impressive Shardul then struck twice, getting rid of Malan and Bavuma. Kuldeep outfoxed Aiden Markram and de Kock’s resistance was ended by debutant Ravi Bishnoi. That set the stage for the in-form David Miller and Klaasen, who has a reputation against spin. Both didn’t disappoint, started with ones and twos and then smashed 53 off the final 5 overs. The 106-ball 139-run stand has given their team a fair chance and their bowlers will look to exploit this surface. The Indians did bowl well, created half-chances which weren’t taken and wilted towards the end. David Miller scored 75* runs of 63 balls and Heinrich Klaasen scored 74 runs of 65 balls. For Team India, Shardul Thakur picks 2 wickets for 35 runs in 8 overs.

Team India unable to chase the target and scored 240/8 in their 40 overs and lost the game by just 9 runs. A brave performance from India, but they were always up against it after slipping to 51 for 4. Rabada and Parnell were superb upfront as they used the conditions superbly. Gill and Dhawan were sent packing cheaply, Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan put together a partnership, but it came at a slow rate and put India’s chase in trouble. Both got a start and both were dismissed in consecutive overs Shreyas counter-punched with a 33-ball half-century. Samson was happy to give him company and then opened up in the company of Shardul Thakur, who had a good day with both bat and ball. But the target was always out of reach despite Samson’s best efforts, finishing with a 63-ball unbeaten 86. Tabraiz Shamsi had a day to forget, but Rabada, Parnell and Maharaj had done enough to secure victory. South Africa need all the points they can manage and then hope for other teams to trip if they’re to qualify directly to the 2023 Cricket World Cup and this is a good start to that end. Sanju Samson scored 86* of 63 balls and Shreyas Iyer scored 50 runs of 37 balls. For South Africa, Lungi Ngidi pick 3 wickets for 52 runs in his 8 overs.
