Laal Singh Chaddha Review: A honest attempt of retelling a classic story in our own way
Laal Singh Chaddha Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars
Just watched Laal Singh Chaddha movie in Cinemas. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.
Cast: Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, Mona Singh and Manav Vij
Director: Advait Chandan
Release Date: 11th August 2022 in Cinemas
Story: It is the official adaptation of Hollywood film Forrest Gump. Laal Singh Chaddha (Aamir Khan) is a slow learner but has a heart of gold. He lives in a small town of Punjab with his mother (Mona Singh). He loves his childhood friend Rupa (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and is keen to marry her. Rupa also loves Laal but does not see him as a life partner.
Rupa hails from a very poor family and has ambitions of making pots of money by becoming a model and ultimately a film star. To realize her dreams, she reaches Bombay and becomes the mistress of financier Abbas Bhai (Harry Parmar). Meanwhile, Laal serves in the Indian army for a brief period, during which he meets Bala (Chaitanya Akkineni) who wants to quit the army and expand his family business of manufacturing men’s vests and briefs.
In fact, Bala offers Laal partnership in the new manufacturing unit he plans to set up and Laal accepts it. Sadly, the Kargil War breaks out in 1999 and Bala dies. After his stint in the army, Laal also meets Mohammed Bhai (Manav Vij) who is a Pakistani terrorist whom he saved during the war. What happens to Bala’s new business? What happens to Laal’s one-sided love story?

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas because movie is official adaption of Forrest Gump which I have liked and 2nd reason is Aamir Khan who is returning after 4 years.
Events in India’s history unfold through the perspective of Laal Singh Chaddha who is a dim-witted man who has a great understanding of emotions. He has a low IQ, who recounts the early years of his life when he found himself in the middle of key historical events. All he wants now is to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart Rupa.
Adapting a classic isn’t an easy territory to tread. Remaking Forrest Gump is even more complicated given its meandering, all-encompassing, nonlinear plot and profound yet simple approach to life and its purpose. You watch a simpleton wandering through life, not looking for answers but finding them along the way. We can’t say if the remake was necessary, but it was definitely a tough act to follow given how disarmingly poignant the original is and you know exactly how the events unfold in it. The first half is entertaining and has many heart warming moments but the post-interval portion is lengthy and bit boring.
Talking about the ingredients of an entertaining film, the comedy and emotions are absolutely tug at the heart strings. Dialogues are good and some of them are excellent too. The Punjabi dialogues are also well-written. Having said that, it must be added that so much of Punjabi dialogues will not go down well with viewers who don’t fully comprehend Punjabi even though care has been taken to use simple Punjabi. Music is also class-appealing and major highlight of this film.
I don’t know why this movie is given poor rating and audiences are not watching because I personally feel movie is good one time watch and there are many pros and less cons here. We’ve always made remakes since time immemorial. Most are frame-to-frame copies. Watch this film to understand why you don’t need to do that to make a quintessentially Indian product out of a foreign import. It has its unique characteristics which also include some flaws but overall a great attempt at retelling a classic story in your way. My view on this movie Recommended
