Jersey Review: Shahid Kapoor shines in this romantic drama but overall fails to create the magic
Jersey Movie Rating: 3 Stars

Just watched Jersey movie on Netflix. So let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur and Pankaj Kapoor
Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri
Release Date: 22nd April 2022 in Cinemas & Digital Premiere on 20th May on Netflix

Story: It is the remake of Telugu movie of same name and also directed by the same director. Set in Chandigarh, Arjun Talwar (Shahid Kapoor) is a fantastic batsman and his coach Bali (Pankaj Kapur) swears by his batting. However, he can’t make it to the Indian cricket team. Dejected, he quits the sport and takes up a job which he loses for no fault of his. He’s in love with Vidya (Mrunal Thakur). Vidya’s father Krishna Rao (Vinay Varma) opposes their relationship and hence, both elope and get married.

After 10 years, the lives of Talwars are not going great. Arjun has been suspended on corruption charges. A lawyer has told him to pay a bribe of Rs. 50,000 to get back his job. However, Arjun refuses to do so. Their kitchen is running thanks to Vidya’s job at a five star hotel. His son Kittu (Ronit Kamra) ask him to buy him the team India jersey on his birthday and Arjun promises.

However, Arjun learns that the jersey costs Rs. 500 and hence, it’s beyond his budget. He tries to take a loan from his friends Amrit (Anjum Batra) and others but unable to manage the money. Arjun dotes on his son and can go to any lengths to make him happy. One day, Arjun decides to start playing all over again because he sees that his son is the happiest when he (Arjun) plays cricket. Does he able to purchase Jersey and succeed as a cricketer despite age not being on his side?

Positives
1. Excellent Performances
2. Screenplay
3. Story
4. Direction
5. Climax

Negatives
1. Length
2. Music
3. Slow & Boring at few places

Durgesh Tiwary’s View : When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on digital premiere because trailer was very good and watched original movie and loved it.

An ex-cricketer struggling to make ends meet, wants to fulfill his child’s wish of getting a Jersey but in the process comes face to face with his heroic past and is forced to decide if he will rise to the occasion and become a symbol of hope or continue to live a life as a loser?

Jersey story is very good but begins on a weak note because it moves at a very slow pace, almost testing the audience’s patience. However, it picks up steam once the real family drama begins. Screenplay engages the viewers once the pace picks up. The screenplay is full of scenes which move the audience emotionally. The entire climax sequence comes like a shock to the viewers. In fact, the climax will also find many among the audience unable to control their tears. All in all, the first few reels may be a dampener but the drama thereafter moves in a manner that it sucks the audience in. Light moments are few; the screenplay could’ve done with more humor.

The first half oscillates between the 1986 track and the 1996 track. A few scenes stand out here like Arjun attacking the player who insults Vidya and Arjun applying cream on Vidya’s hands. The scenes where Arjun slaps Kittu and later gets slapped by Vidya are quite moving. The charity match sequence is exhilarating and so is the intermission point. Post-interval, the scene where Arjun heads to the railway station just to shout in excitement is too good. Vidya asking Arjun to fly instead of going by train is cute. The final match is euphoric. The finale is unexpected. Length of this film should have been shorter by 20-30 minutes for ore impact. Music is other part which fails to match the expectation as same duo Sachet-Parampara has given blockbuster songs in their last film Kabir Singh.. Overall, movie rests on outstanding performances, the emotional moments and the touching finale. It is an entertaining family film which will keep its target audience happy. My view on this movie Recommended
