Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on release day in cinemas as loved the trailer and its first time a Bollywood hero is directed by south director.
A man is driven by a personal vendetta to rectify the wrongs in society, while keeping a promise made years ago. He comes up against a monstrous outlaw with no fear, who has caused extreme suffering to many.
It’s difficult to summaries the film’s plot as it has too many subplots and undercurrents. What begins as a heist film, soon turns into a revenge fantasy, and then segues into family drama with a huge dollop of patriotism thrown in, not to mention all the social reform messages. Every action sequence has an emotional scene either preceding it or following it. And even the action has an emotional core to it. Atlee leaves the viewers guessing throughout the film, introducing a new twist in the tale at regular intervals. He makes the audience invest in the film and also explains that what’s happening is there for a reason. While the story and emotions engage you into the world in the first half, the second half has two of the best mass moments of the film, one of which is the robbery sequence, which makes up for some flaws in the latter half. The score used for Vikram Rathore just adds on to the aura of the character. It’s a vigilante film done right. Shah Rukh Khan rocks and also shocks as in the last 31 years, viewers have never seen him in such avatars. Among his roles, it’s the father, Vikram Rathore, who packs more of a wallop. His entry is akin to Rajinikath’s entry in the film, and he gets the best punch dialogue in his kitty.
On the flipside, there is a solid message to the society in the movie, but it has not been told much effectively. The emotions in the first half were good, and even the scenes involving Deepika in the second half came out well. However, the powerful message that the film intends to deliver is not presented well amidst the high elevations and stunning action set pieces. The editing could have been better as far as the second half is concerned. Plot-wise, the movie isn’t new, and hence, at times, the movie turns a bit predictable. There are a few over-the-top scenes which were placed intentionally to cater to the masses. While some of them were good, a few cliches could have been avoided. As it is the case with mass films, one needs to ignore logics to enjoy the proceedings. Music was expected to be good but its average except Chaleya. The romantic track of SRK with Nayanthara isn’t convincing as their relationship escalates quickly. Sunil Grover, Eijaz Khan and Ridhi Dogra seem as wasted talent in the film. Their characters could have got a little more to do in the film. The comic undertones towards the end of the climax could have been avoided as the intensity was at its peak in the sequences preceding those in the finale.
Overall, movie is a well-made commercial entertainer that has all the elements to please the action lovers and Shah Rukh Khan fans. But the social message the movie intends to deliver could have been conveyed in an even better manner. My view on this movie Recommended for only SRK fans.
