Game Result: India won by 188 runs
Man Of the Match: Kuldeep Yadav

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India captain KL Rahul won the toss in the 1st test against Bangladesh and decided to bat first at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chattogram.

Team India scored 278/6 on day 1 stumps. An absorbing day of Test match cricket. At the end of the day’s play, it does seem like the honors are even, although Bangladesh would be the happier side marginally. India won a good toss but most of their batters fell to loose shots, thereby failing to convert starts. In fact, at 48/3, Bangladesh were all over the visitors but a counterattack from Pant started the rearguard action that was furthered by a solid century stand between Pujara and Iyer. The India No.3 was unfortunate to miss out on a deserving century while Iyer’s knock has been aggressive albeit with lots of luck. Taijul was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, drying up the runs and also getting the ball to spin sharply. Ebadot also plugged away with real venom but didn’t get the luck he deserved. The track hasn’t been extremely difficult to bat on, but with the ball turning on the first day itself and variable bounce on display, things could get tougher as the game progresses. That said, the Chattogram pitch does tend to ease out generally, so at this point, the hosts would definitely be happy.Shreyas Iyer is unbeaten on 82* and Cheteshwar Pujara scored brilliant 90 runs. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam pick 3 wickets for his team.

IND: 278/6 On Day 1 stumps

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 404 runs in their first innings. A competitive score from the visitors on a surface that’s been on the slower side with the spinners getting some turn and variable bounce. There was also some help for the seamers yesterday with the new ball but in general, it’s been a decent batting track if the batters have looked to apply themselves. Unfortunately for India, some of their big guns failed to do so. Iyer and Pujara bailed them out from a crisis, and then the Ashwin-Kuldeep stand added some more muscle to their total even as the pitch seemed to get a touch flatter and slower. Bangladesh’s bowlers toiled hard and would have had much better returns to show if their fielders had supported them properly. Quite a few dropped catches were seen and only time will tell whether those will be costly or not. Taijul plugged away at one end with nagging accuracy and his spin partner Mehidy had a much better outing today as the duo finished with four apiece. Ebadot also bowled exceedingly well and he was finally rewarded this morning with the big wicket of Iyer. Cheteshwar Pujara Scored 90 runs and Shreyas Iyer scored 86 runs. For Bangladesh, Taijul Islam & Mehidy Hasan Miraz pick 4 wickets each.

Bangladesh scored 133/8 in their first innings on day 2 stumps. They are still trailing by 271 runs with 2 wickets in hand. Bangladesh have been blown away by Kuldeep Yadav in a spell that Shane Warne would be very proud of. He took four wickets in six overs on introduction and found turn with bounce. After Ashwin-Kuldeep’s rearguard action to help push it past 400, Siraj got a first ball wicket when Bangladesh began their story. Umesh had Yasir’s stump flying. Siraj then accounted for Zakir and Litton soon to make it 56/4 and all four wickets to pacers. Enter Kuldeep, he got Shakib the first ball the latter faced him, almost had Nurul LBW same over. Eventually got him a while later, removed Rahim and then did a double again by knocking over Taijul. It looked as if the innings could be over today, but Mehidy yet again showed his class and interestingly Ebadot came out with some nice defence and a few attacking strokes. India on top, looking good to enforce follow-on should they have that option. Bangladesh need a miracle to get out from the hole they have dug themselves into. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 28 runs and Litton Das scored 24 runs. For Team India, Kuldeep Yadav picks 4 wickets.

IND: 404
BAN: 133/8 at day 2 stumps

Day 3
Bangladesh bowled out for 150 runs in their 1st innings and India have big lead of 254 runs. India completing the formalities conceding 17 runs today. You understand why India didn’t opt the follow-on because there is a chance of Bangladesh batting well in the second innings and putting India under pressure in the last innings because the pitch is still very good to bat on. So they want to cushion the lead with probably 200 runs and put Bangladesh in a corner as there is a lot of time left in this game. India started with Kuldeep and Siraj, the former broke a stubborn 42-run stand by getting Ebadot. Mehidy didn’t get have much choice and he was out stumped to Axar with not much support at the end. Mushfiqur Rahim scored 28 runs and Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 25 runs. For Team India, Kuldeep Yadav picks 5 wickets.

Team India declared their 2nd innings on 258.2 and set the target of mammoth 513 runs to Bangladesh. India have ticked all the boxes after deciding against the follow-on. Skipper Rahul failed to convert a start but Gill and Pujara made merry, tackling the spinners with aplomb. There has been spin on offer although the track has gotten slower from yesterday but take nothing away from both batters. Gill was at his fluent best and deservedly got to his maiden Test century while Pujara ended his century jinx with a flamboyant knock of his own. What stood out in the No.3’s innings is the number of times he stepped out to loft spinners down the ground. It’s not a tactic we’ve seen often from him and while some of it might have been dictated by the match situation, there also seemed to be a clear change in mindset. The duo’s marathon stand nullified any minor hope Bangladesh would have had of triggering a collapse of sorts. The scoring rate also picked up significantly in the last two hours and this now leaves the hosts with a mountain to climb. Six full sessions left and about an hour today. India have a firm grip on this game. Shubman Gill Scored 110 runs and Cheteshwar Pujara scored unbeaten 102* runs. For Bangladesh, Khaled Ahmed & Mehidy Hasan Miraz pick 1 wicket each.

Bangladesh scored 42 runs without losing any wicket and still they need 470 runs with all wickets in hand. Bangladesh’s young opening duo have done well to negotiate the tricky 12-over phase without much troubles. The ball has spun a bit but with the track slowing down considerably, batting hasn’t been all that difficult. And this should give some hope to the hosts for the next two days. But today was all about India. Having wrapped up the final two wickets inside the first hour, KL opted against the follow-on, and it was then about extending the lead as quickly as possible. Centuries from Gill and Pujara, that too at a frenetic pace, ensured that the hosts were put into bat for the second time with less than hour left for stumps. Another 471 runs remain and six sessions. While Chattogram did witness a record-breaking run chase last year by West Indies, Bangladesh will be thinking only about survival for now. As for India, they have a mountain of runs on the board and will need to stay patient on this slowing surface.

IND: 404 & 258/2d
BAN: 150 & 42/0 on Day 3 stumps

Day 4
Bangladesh scored 272/6 on day 4 stumps and they still need 241 runs with only 4 wickets in hand. India have been made to toil hard here in Chattogram. The two left-handed Bangladesh openers batted the entire first session and stitched a century partnership. There were hardly any chances created either. It was Umesh Yadav in the post-lunch session who managed to get the breakthrough as he induced a loose shot from Shanto. The hosts lost two more wickets before Tea with Yasir falling to Axar and Litton Das throwing his wicket away against Kuldeep. Debutant Zakir Hasan batted with a superb temperament to register his maiden Test ton but perished immediately with Ashwin bagging his first wicket of the match. Axar bowled superbly with the second new ball. He picked two wickets in the same over while Mushfiqur was beaten by the spin on the back foot, Nurul was stumped coming forward. For a moment, it looked like Bangladesh would crumble today itself, but Shakib and Mehidy dragged this Test into the final day by batting 14 overs. While the former wasn’t afraid to play aerial shots, the latter was happy to block it around. Zakir Hasan scored 100 runs and Najmul Hossain Shanto scored 67 runs. For Team India, Axar Patel pick 3 wickets.

IND: 404 & 258/2d
BAN: 150 & 272/6 on Day 4 stumps

Day 5
Bangaldesh bowled out for 324 in their 2nd innings and lost the game by 188 runs. India wrap up the match in 50 minutes on the final day. Siraj nipped out Mehidy when the latter chased a wide delivery. Shakib went after the Indian bowlers and hit a flurry of boundaries but he was eventually castled by Kuldeep Yadav for 84. Bangladesh’s tail didn’t last long and the visitors have taken a 1-0 lead in this two-match Test series. Zakir Hasan scored 100 runs and skipper Shaikb Al Hasan scored 84 runs. For Team India, Axar Patel pick 4 wickets.
