2nd Test
Game Date: 2nd February – 6th February 2024
Game Result: Team India won by 106 runs
Man Of the Match: Jasprit Bumrah

Now I am going to share day-to-day activity of this test match with all the details, records and milestones in my way.

Day 1
Team India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss against England and decided to bat first at Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam. Rajat Patidar is debuting and Mukesh Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav are playing today in the place of injured KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja & Mohammed Siraj.

Team India scored 336/6 runs on day 1 stumps in their 1st innings after batting first. England took three wickets in that final session to leave with honours even on a pitch that hasn’t offered any great deal of turn so far. All their bowlers did a fine job, starting with James Anderson who maintained great control in all his spells, and then the three spinners who were pretty accurate. The star of the day though was Yashasvi Jaiswal as he cruised to an unbeaten 179 at a fair clip, showing good balance between defence and attack. He was the only Indian batter to make it big. Many of them got starts, but the next highest score after Jaiswal was just 34 from Shubman Gill. That will be a source of disappointment for the hosts who could’ve really nailed down the advantage after winning a good toss. But it wasn’t to be as England kept chipping away. Anderson got one, Hartley got one, while the debutant Bashir and Rehan picked up two wickets each. So it’s again set up to be an engrossing Test. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 179* runs and Shubman Gill scored 34 runs. For England, James Anderson & Rehan Ahmed picked 2 wickets each.

Day 2
Team India bowled out for 396 runs in their 1st innings. Not often that a team would be disappointed after scoring almost 400 runs in the first innings, but this is one of those days. India got a massive contribution from Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top, as the youngster showed great composure and technique to notch up his first double hundred at International level. It was an innings where he looked untroubled and didn’t even offer any real half chances, while wickets fell at the other end. Everyone in India’s middle order got starts but couldn’t make it big, and that would be a cause for concern for the hosts. England were miserly with their bowling and sharp with their fielding, making the Indians work for every run. James Anderon at the ripe age of 41 ended up bowling 25 overs of disciplined seam bowling where he never left the fourth stump channel and ended up being the pick of the bowlers with 3/47. Shoaib Bashir, who hadn’t bowled too much in his domestic season thus far, ended up toiling for 38 overs, and picked up three wickets for his troubles. The other youngster Rehan Ahmed also made his mark with a three-fer, extracting extra bounce to trouble the batters. This is still a very good batting wicket, but the odd ball does bounce awkwardly, and that should excite the Indian spinners. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 209 runs and Shubman Gill scored 34 runs. For England, James Anderson & Rehan Ahmed picked 3 wickets each.

England bowled out for 253 runs in their 1st innings. And that is why India are so difficult to beat on home turf. Because once the wickets fall, the floodgates open and things can end very quickly. England got a good start, with Duckett and Crawley added 59 for the first wicket. The latter played brilliantly, using his long strides to good effect to score a fifty, before a superb backpaddling catch from Shreyas Iyer sent him packing. Then came a sublime spell of seam bowling from Jasprit Bumrah. A lovely outswinger to Root, an in swinging yorker to Pope and a cutter that went under Stokes’ bat. Bumrah’s spell reduced the potency of this aggressive middle order on a placid pitch, as India fought back strongly in the second hour post Lunch. Kuldeep chipped in with three wickets for himself, and a rare scorecard for Indian conditions because Ravi Ashwin has gone wicketless. India in the driver’s seat with a lead of 143 runs now. Zak Crawley scored 76 runs and skipper Ben Stokes scored 47 runs. For Team India, Jasprit Bumrah picked 6 wickets.

Team India scored 28/0 on Day 2 stumps and they have now lead of 171 runs with 10 wickets in hand.

Day 3
Team India bowled out for 255 runs in their 2nd innings. England will need a record chase if they are to win this one. This Indian innings started yesterday as Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma manouvered the evening session. Today morning, both were skittled out by the swing of James Anderson. Shubman Gill was the top scorer for India, as he fought through a scratchy start to grow in confidence, attack the spinners and score his 3rd Test century. He was supported by Axar for a while, but after their wickets fell, the Indian lower order folded pretty quickly. A good display by England’s rookie spinners, who all had increased workloads this innings with Joe Root off the field with a finger injury. Four wickets for Hartley, three for Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir also chipped in with the important wicket of Gill. Playing in the fourth innings on the Indian subcontinent is never easy and chasing a record 399 is going to be doubly difficult. But if any team can do it, it is this throw caution to the wind Bazball team. For Team India, Shubman Gill scored 104 runs and Axar Patel scored 45 runs. For England, Tom Hartley picked 4 wickets.

England scored 67/1 on Day 3 stumps. They need another 332 runs with 9 wickets in hand.

Day 4
England bowled out for 292 runs and lost the test by 106 runs. India bounce back after the defeat in Hyderabad to win the Vizag Test. Two individuals stood out for them and played a big role. Yashasvi Jaiswal with the bat in the first innings where he made a double hundred when the next best score was 34. And Jasprit Bumrah. Where do you even begin with him. That spell on the second afternoon on a pitch with not much help was just unbelievable, and yet it was something we’ve come to expect from the man. He picked up 6/45 to give India a healthy first innings lead, using the reverse swing to great effect. He then played his part in the second innings as well with three wickets today to end England’s fight. Ravichandran Ashwin bowled beautifully as well for his three-for, leaving him on 499 Test wickets. England did make a good fist of it though. Crawley played beautifully for his 73 and kept them in the game till he was there. However, the visitors wll look back on a couple of dismissals as wasted opportunities. Joe Root played a terrible shot to get out, and captain Ben Stokes just gave his wicket away with lazy running. On a pitch that was still playing very well, and not offering that much turn, had those two hung around, this could’ve gotten much closer. Nevertheless, what a cracking series we have on our hands here. Zak Crawley scored 73 runs and Tom Hartley scored 36 runs. For Team India, Bumrah & Ashwin picked 3 wickets each.
