Dream Girl 2 Review: Pooja failed to recreate the quirky charm despite excellent performances and slapstick comedy
Dream Girl 2 Movie Rating: 2.5 Stars
Just watched Dream Girl 2 movie in Cinemas. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Ananya Panday, Paresh Rawal, Annu Kapoor, Rajpal Yadav, Vijay Raaz, Asrani, Abhishek Banerjee, Manjot Singh and Seema Pahwa
Director: Raaj Shaandilyaa
Release Date: 25th August 2023 in Cinemas
Story: It is the sequel to Dream Girl. Set in Mathura, movie revolves around Karam (Ayushmann Khurrana) who lives with his father Jagjit (Annu Kapoor). Karam is jobless and both organize jagrata evenings for a living. He loves Pari (Ananya Panday) who is lawyer by profession. But her father (Manoj Joshi) imposes conditions to find a job, renovate the house and amass at least 25 lakhs in your bank balance within a span of six months, otherwise he’d get the daughter married to someone else.
Karam’s friend Smiley (Manjot Singh) asks him to dress up as a woman and perform at Sona Bar, where the latter works. Karam reluctantly agrees and masquerades as the hot and sexy Pooja and asks Sona Bhai (Vijay Raaz) for a job. He gets smitten by her and allows to dance at his bar. Meanwhile, Smiley is madly in love with Sakina (Anusha Mishra).
Sakina’s father Abu Saleem (Paresh Rawal) makes his own demands. He wants his heartbroken son Mohammed Shahrukh (Abhishek Banerjee) to get married first and only then he’ll allow Smiley to get married. Also, he’ll give away 50 lakhs to whoever married his son. Smiley hits upon the idea to get Karam dressed as Pooja and married to Shahrukh. Of course, the objective is that Pooja will run away with the Rs. 50 lakh he receives from Shahrukh’s family, never to be found again.
The other twist in the tale is that Jumani (Seema Pahwa), Abu Saleem’s sister who is married to Sajan wants to divorce her husband and marry Karam. Meanwhile, Karam’s father has fallen for Jumani and Sajan himself has fallen hard for Pooja. But this entire drama to make a fast buck is beset with unforeseen problems. What happens next is all about this movie.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on release day in cinemas as loved the trailer and liked the 1st movie of this franchise.
Karam, a small-town boy from Mathura, is struggling every day to pay his father’s debt, who has borrowed money from nearly everyone on the planet. On the other hand, he is deeply in love with Pari, whose father has kept the conditions to marry her. To make ends meet, Karam poses as Pooja, which creates wild chaos and a comedy of errors.
Dream Girl 2 is predictable yet fun-filled story. Although the drama has entertainment, it is not a seamless drama but rather looks like an assemblage of funny scenes. The biggest plus of the movie are the dialogues. The one-line punches land well, and evoke laughter, especially in the first half without going too over the top. The story moves at a quick pace as the director wastes no time to get to the point. The screenplay is smartly written as the writer and director intertwine the plot with gag after gag. Some of the gags and one-liners make up for the loopholes in the storyline. Many comedy scenes come across as too forced, and simply add ot the film. In comedy films, dialogues and their comic timing play a pivotal role in bringing out the laughs, but here, the one-liners here are kitschy and don’t always land. Ayushmann Khurrana delightfully switches between playing Karam’s and Pooja’s characters, he’s a scream in the dance sequences with his jhataks and lataks. But Ananya Panday has little to do and is hopeless with her Braj Bhasha dialogue delivery. Annu Kapoor, as always, is brilliant. While Paresh Rawal, Seema Pahwa, Vijay Raaz, Manjot Singh (as Karam’s friend Smiley) and Abhishek Banerjee stand out with commendable support.
On the flipside, the story has as many subplots as characters that cross paths in some really funny situations. Still, the film becomes a bit of a drag in its second half when the jokes fall flat and the pace gets sluggish. The climax is, well, an anti-climax and disappoints. While the story sets itself up for a blast at the interval point, the proceedings in the post-interval portions are not as entertaining. While the one-liners keep coming from the characters, the plot goes a little haywire. While the director continues with the formula of gags in his screenplay, most of them in the second half don’t land well. The romantic track of Karam and Pari is also not well-established, and the makers could have probably opted for one romantic track at the start to set things up. The music is a major negative, as barring Dil Ka Telephone, all the songs fall flat. The climax monologue is forced and makes no sense.
Overall, movie relies on familiar territory, often straying into unnecessary comedic tangents. Despite some good performances and moments, the film falls short of recreating the quirky charm of its predecessor. it is a one-time watch for some solid punch lines, quirky characters, Ayushmann Khurrana’s performance, and a great ensemble of the finest comic artists. For someone who has not watched Dream Girl, the movie is the good Bollywood comedy with its zany plot and sharp performances is a film that will drive away your stress. My view on this movie Recommended for only Dream Girl fans.
