Doctor G Review: Refreshing take on gynecologist with an underlying social message
Doctor G Movie Rating: 3.5 Stars
Finally watched Doctor G movie on Netflix. Let’s focus on the complete details, story, positive/negatives and at last my personal view on this movie.
Cast: Ayushmann Khurrana, Rakul Preet Singh and Shefali Shah
Director: Anubhuti Kashyap
Release Date: 14th October 2022 in Cinemas & digital premiere from 11th December 2022 on Netflix
Story: Set in Bhopal, movie revolves around Dr. Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana) who lives with his widowed mother Shobha (Sheeba Chaddha) an aspiring chef who hopes to make it big on social media through her cookery channels and his best friend Chaddi (Abhay Chintamani Mishr) who is preparing for the civil services examination.
Uday wants to be an orthopaedician but there’s no seat available in that stream and so he is forced to get into gynaecology because of his less marks in the entrance exams. He plans to give the exam again and just sit the year out become he thinks this domain is predominantly for female doctors. His orthopaedic cousin Ashok (Indraneil Sengupta), who is also his role model, asks him to take up gynaecology and keep trying to get a better rank next year so that he can try for orthopaedics again.
The situation is hard for him because he’s the only male in the class and ragged by his group of all-female seniors. The head of the department, Dr. Nandini Srivastava (Shefali Shah) also detests him for not being passionate about the course. Hence, his life is hell. Meanwhile, he slowly gets interested in the course and becomes a close friend of Fatima (Rakul Preet Singh) who is also in the same batch.
Slowly but surely, he starts accepting gynecology as his stream. An incident changes his life and also changes how he looks at gynecology and gynecologist’s.

Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie on digital premiere because it looks good in parts only so skipped theatrical release.
The film follows the struggles of a male doctor who is interested in orthopaedics but instead becomes a gynaecologist, thus leading to chaos. Uday Gupta finds himself as the lone male student in the department. His reluctance leads to chaos, confusion, comedy and eventually, great camaraderie with his fellow classmates.
The film is set in the gynaecology department of a government college in Bhopal. It showcases the lives of overworked doctors dealing with pregnant couples who have little knowledge of their condition, are prone to unnecessary fears, and often try to hide their actual problems with the people treating them. It has a very fresh and quite a novel story about doctors. A subject of this kind has not been seen earlier in the Bollywood. Screenplay is also very entertaining and, but it remains a class-appealing subject, but the light moments keep the viewers engaged and entertained. The film has its heart in the right place.
The narration is consistent throughout, keeping us in stitches by showcasing real-life situations. The gags aren’t forced but are holistically woven into the narrative. Performance wise everyone including lead and supporting cast shines in this film. Director has extracted fine performances from the entire ensemble cast in her debut feature. But I feel there are some unnecessary sub-plots of Dr Ashok and forced romantic angle which does not add much value to the film. Music could have been better as no songs are good.
Overall, movie is a conversation starter of sorts for several issues plaguing our society. It is a well-made entertaining film which has refreshing story that you might have not seen with a social message. If you have not seen this movie in theatre watch this one on OTT. My view on this movie Recommended
