Durgesh Tiwary’s View: When I watched the trailer of this film planned to watch this movie in cinemas on release day as loved the concept of this film. Set in Varanasi, the film captures small-town romance. The story revolves around Ranjan, a hopeless romantic who secures a government job to marry his girlfriend, Titli Mishra. As they prepare for their wedding, a bizarre time loop occurs, with Titli being oblivious to it, repeatedly resetting the day to the Haldi ceremony, leaving Ranjan stuck in the frustrating world of a time loop.
Bhool Chuk Maaf movie is inspired by Hollywood film Groundhog Day. Karan Sharma has written the story which is set in a non-metropolitan city. The town settings and characters give a certain freshness to the story. The production design and costume design too has been spot on. The real hero of the film is the screenplay, which fuses Indian mythology, slapstick humor, witty dialogue with social commentary to make a film which has something for everyone. Those believing the cycle of karma will take heart, the Shiva devotees, who know about the deity’s penchant for imparting life lessons will rejoice and the more practical viewers will react well to the barbed reality of landing a sarkari naukri. The dialogues are a standout, packed with witty one-liners and situational humor that evoke genuine laughs. The comedic chemistry between the characters, particularly in scenes involving Ranjan reliving the pre-wedding day, adds to the film’s enjoyment factor. Karan Sharma’s direction is decent, more so considering that it’s his debut flick. Despite such an unusual subject, he tries his best to make you believe that what’s happening with Ranjan is very much possible. A few scenes stand out like the madness at the police station and Titli trolling a potential match followed by Ranjan’s dramatic entry. Post-interval, the sequence where Ranjan decides to speak kind-heartedly to everyone will be loved. The finale is sweet. Rajkummar Rao once again proves he’s the king of small-town roles. Wamiqa Gabbi as Titli truly justifies her name and excels.
Despite its promising premise, Bhool Chuk Maaf falters in its execution of the time-loop concept. The idea of a repetitive day has a lot of scope but the film doesn’t explore it that well. The first half of the film drags, taking too long to establish the story. While the comedy is a strength, not all jokes land, and some feel forced. The narrative also lacks novelty as it treads through a well-trodden path, without offering enough twists to go beyond what is expected out of the film. The makers have ended up showing too much in the trailer. Hence, though the first half is lovely, it is largely predictable. It’s in the second half where the film finally goes into the unexpected zone. Even here, the film suffers as the narrative stagnates in between. A few developments are silly. It’s unconvincing that Ranjan took a while to realise what ‘nek kaarya’ is all about. He also takes a long time to convince Hamid Ansari. Overall, movie is a delightful family entertainer with a mix of comedy, romance, drama, and emotions. Witty dialogues and stellar supporting performances make it an enjoyable watch for those who appreciate simple, feel-good stories. The situational comedy and dialogue, coupled with credible performances, make you accept the time loop anomaly with a pinch of salt. My view on this movie Recommended If you want to watch a light-hearted and heart-warming film with family.
